MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear ECSS members,

With the first year of my presidency over I would like to draw a line and see how far we have come and whether we lived up to our task plan we set ourselves last year at the Belgrade 10th anniversary Congress.

Finance

Our idea was to establish a basis for sound financial planning for 2007. This has been achieved partly with Lucozade Sport Science Academy becoming Gold Partner of the ECSS for a three year period, Masterfoods remaining Founding Sponsor and Adidas joining as Bronze Partner. Further companies are currently negotiating with the ECSS.

EJSS

It was imperative to work on our journal the European Journal of Sport Science (EJSS) being indexed and listed. The review procedures have been finalised and a listing been accepted for Thomson Scientific (ISI) coverage from 2008. It will be indexed and abstracted in

- Sciences Citation Index Expanded (also known as SciSearch)

- Journal Citation Reports / Sciences Edition

- Focus On: Sports Science & Medicine

Position Statements

The intention to publish position statements in EJSS was realised this year in the Vol. 6 No. 1 Exercise & obesity Overtraining syndrome

Vol. 6 No. 2 Role of stretching exercises in sports Tendon overuse injury

Vol. 6 No. 3 Exercise and bone

Further position statements are in the pipeline and will be published in future issues.

Membership

Considering the dramatic increase in Congress participation, the aim was to bring the membership figures in line with these. For 2006 we have 1374 paid up members which is a strong increase from 2005 with 775 but is still behind the extreme high figure of Congress participation in 2006 Lausanne with 2.071. We thus want to work on improving membership services and encourage the sport scientific community to become members of the ECSS. This will partly be realised by an online sport science ECSS database comprising all the abstracts of the ECSS Congresses since 1996 with access free of charge for ECSS members and partly by identifying additional membership benefits.

Congress participation

As mentioned the participation at this year´s Congress in Lausanne exceeded the 2.000 mark. This surpassed our expectations and promises to also provide Jyväskylä 2007 with an impressive attendance. A total of 63 countries participated which is also the highest number to date. However, it must be our aim to maintain an excellent scientific and social programme and to maintain the familiar community atmosphere which is the strength of the ECSS. Quantity cannot improve at cost of the quality! It will be the main objective not to increase participation figures but to guarantee the services and high quality of the Congresses.

Remaining goals:

The upcoming Congress in Jyväskylä from 11th - 14th July 2007 will provide the usual interdisciplinary scientific programme with top-level presentations divided into plenary sessions, invited symposia and thematic sessions. Also, affordable accommodation and registration fees will be provided as well as the traditional services including coffee breaks, lunches and social events free of additional charge. We hope to attract colleagues from all sport scientific disciplines and particularly from the Eastern European countries. With Ro-mania and Bulgaria becoming members of the EU in January 2007, we hope to welcome scientific colleagues from these countries.

The year after the Congress will go to Lisbon and a meeting with the local organising team is scheduled for 11th - 14th January with the ECSS Boards for the finalisation of the scientific programme. Within this meeting talks will also take place with the Oslo 2009 organisers. In terms of 2010 bids can still be submitted.

The positions President-Elect, General Secretary and Treasurer are elected for the term July 2007 - July 2009. A candidate proposal sheet is included in this News Bulletin. The positions will be determined by the majority of votes expressed by the ECSS members, who will receive an electronic ballot form.

On a more personal note I would like to express my sincere thanks to you for being part of the ECSS and encourage you to actively shape the future of our organisation.

With warm regards,

Erich Müller

11th ANNIVERSARY CONGRESS LAUSANNE INSIDE STORY Inside account by the local organising team: Hans Hoppeler, Theres Fleury and Stephan Klossner

The ECSS 2006 Lausanne Congress is a thing of the past… let us review this event from the perspective of the Local Organising Committee.

Scientifically speaking this year´s ECSS Congress offered a wide range of topics and sessions. Apart from 4 Plenary Sessions and the 50 Invited Ses-sions 50 Thematic Session comprised 1.552 submitted abstracts. The sessions were supplemented by 1.144 poster presentations scheduled for three days of the Congress. Altogether a record 2.073 persons from 63 countries attended.

Apart from these impressing figures single memories remain such as the throngs of persons registering at the registration desk or the rare moments when we were able to visit a scientific session. With the dimension of the Congress, there were of course also problems to be solved and thousands of e-mails to be answered and written. The shouldering of this immense task was largely due to the excellent teamwork between the Local Organising Committee and the ECSS Office in Cologne. Very early on, the course was set in terms of successful organisation and planning. At this time we would like to thank all involved for their invaluable work (Erich Müller, Gerard King, Elias Tsolakidis, Dana Jung etc.) for the extreme positive working atmosphere. The combination of the local organiser´s dedication in organising such an event and the professionalism of the ECSS did wonders to take things forward. Our thanks also goes to three universities namely the University of Lausan-ne, Ecole Polytechnique and the University of Bern without whose support the staff and financial challenges could not have been overcome.

Lausanne as the Olympic capital left nothing to be desired as host city. Free access to the Olympic Museum was granted to all participants and with its beautiful location on lake Geneve bordered by vineyards, the social programme was a real treat. Something the participants will probably not forget was the thunderstorm on the day of the opening ceremony, which even paralysed public transport for a short time. In spite of the variety of possibilities of experiencing the mountains, lakes, vineyards and other sights of Lausanne and Switzerland, most participants consequently visited the sessions to look at powerpoint presentations instead. This clearly speaks for the scientific quality of the ECSS Congress.

The social events will always remain a long-lasting memory. Apart from the ECSS party after the gala dinner the dance and theatre performance (Béjart) and the theatre Barnabé were outstanding events.

When after a busy and strenuous working week, we finally returned to our own "normal lives" and flats, we could not suppress a melancholic feeling in spite of all the work. It felt like the ending of spectacular holidays with a return journey home to normality. The Congress was a wonderful event and an unforgettable experience!

Masterfoods always at the front of the scene of physical activity

Masterfoods was a pioneer in promoting physical activity since 1964 with the Tour de Flandres. From the sponsoring of Olympic Games, soccer cups, athletics championships to the promotion of health benefits of physical activity for all.

Masterfoods organised consensus conferences from 1990 to 1996 in the area of sport and nutrition and their proceedings are still the reference in this area.

Since 1995, Masterfoods has been the founding sponsor of the European College of Sport Science and has helped inaugurate the Young Investigators Award (10 best posters and 10 best oral presentations during the annual congress) and endowed this prestigous award with prize money.

Apart from this "visible" activity, Masterfoods supports and is involved in scientific research projects in Universities and research institutes around the world, and is an active participant in promoting physical activity and healthier lifestyle.

A few examples are listed below:

In France the company supports several research projects on the role of physical activity for health - ICAPS: 4 years intervention study involving 1.000 school children in 8 colleagues around Strasbourg. - Leisure time and occupational physical activity in relation to cardiovascular risk factors (article published in Public Health Nutrition, Volume 9, Number 6, September 2006).

Masterfoods started up an association, “Prêt à Bouger = Ready to move” to initiate physical activity and facilitate access for children from low social economic districts: 100 centres in 2005 Ile de France, Orleans, Strasbourg = 15.000 teenagers (outside the sport associations and the schools).

The Netherlands - Get Up! Vending machine branding communication + workshops to promote activity. - LEKKER BUITEN SPELEN campaign “Jantje Beton”, and Jetix Tv channel to encourage young kids to play (actively) outside. Masterfoods funds and installs playgrounds for kids.

Belgium Since 2001, Masterfoods has been partner of several sport federations (BVLO, AFFESS, AES, ULB Sport) to set up yearly programmes on healthy lifestyle combining physical activity and balanced diet for children aged 8-14 during summer holidays. (15.000 trainers – 150.000 children involved each year).

JSPFSM REPORT The 61st annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine (JSFPSM) hosted the 9th international exchange of the ECSS and the JSPFSM in Kobe, Japan.

After being invited to present at the 61st meeting of the Japanese Society of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine, it is safe to say I had mixed emotions. On the one hand I was extremely excited and honoured to be representing ECSS whilst on the other, I was as equally nervous about the prospect of travelling such a long distance on my own. Indeed, I am a little bit embarrassed to say that I actually emailed Prof Katsumura two days before detailing my concerns! Are the airport and bus stations well sign-posted? Do you think the people will understand me ok? I need not have worried though. Despite my strong Belfast accent, I managed to make it safely to Japan in one piece!

The 12 hour flight to Japan from Paris was my first experience of a long haul flight. I had been warned by the chronobiologists in my department (Prof. Jim Waterhouse) of some of the difficulties I may face. Of course, as a young and perhaps naive PhD student, I thought I would be fine. I kept my watch on British time to monitor exactly where I was. Despite my precautionary approach, at only 3 hours into the flight (5 pm British time) the atmosphere became a little dark. This appeared to signal the release of melatonin making me a little sleepy. Was it bedtime already?! A few hours later (11 pm British time), it suddenly became morning. I finally arrived in Kansai International Airport at 8 am Japanese time (12 30 am British time) on what was a baking hot Saturday morning. My body clock appeared to be 'all over the place', to say the least!

A few hours later, I finally checked in at the Portopia Hotel and yes you've guessed it, I went straight to bed! I was greeted by Prof Katsumura and his colleagues later that evening who subsequently took Mette and I to a restaurant in the centre of Kobe for a traditional Japanese dinner. After initially removing our shoes prior to taking seat at the dining table, I can honestly say that I was treated to the most unusual but yet fascinating array of cuisine, both cooked and uncooked! The delivery of dishes to the table appeared to be never ending but more importantly, I also thoroughly enjoyed the company and conversations which we shared. Upon arrival back to the hotel, it is perhaps unsurprising to say that I was not ready for bed. I therefore ventured to the hotel bar and after initially being mistaken for an 'actor' by a few of the customers, I took seat at the bar! The Japanese people were fantastic to me, treating me to various drinks and indeed we were soon sharing a song together. The 'Jetlag' was still taking its toll, however, and in fact I could not

E sleep until Japanese morning had arrived.

Unfortunately, this set the tone for the majority of my stay in Japan, sleeping by day and waking at night.

On the day of my presentation, I surprisingly had little nerves. Perhaps after presenting in, what was at times, the intense environment of Lausanne I have now become conditioned to 'stage fright'. I must give a special thank you, however, to the organisers of the International session as they were particularly effective in creating a relaxed environment. There were seven presentations in the session, five from Japanese delegates followed by myself and finally, Mette. I deliberately tried to speak as slow as I could so as to overcome both the language and accent barrier. I think I managed to achieve this as my presentation was well received. As usual, Mette gave an excellent presentation and she also received many questions.

The same evening, Prof Katsumura and his colleagues again treated Mette and I to another fantastic Japanese meal. This one began a little stranger though as the particularly appetising fish on my plate soon appeared to give its last 'breath' of life. At least I was getting the freshest of cuisine! Like the first meal, I thoroughly enjoyed the many dishes that I was treated to and we shared many moments of laughter over my reaction when the fish appeared to be still swimming on my plate! I must also say how much I enjoyed the company of Miss Chihoko Ueda, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Tokyo. Chihoko had presented some research earlier that day regarding data she had collected at Loughborough University in the UK.

As my time in Japan drew to a close, I began to reflect on my experiences in Kobe. Japanese people are fantastic. They are some of the kindest and warmest people I have ever met. I will never forget the hospitality I was shown by Prof Katsumura and his colleagues during my stay. I only hope that they will one day travel to Liverpool so that I can return these acts of kindness. I will also be eternally grateful to the many customers in the hotel bar on my opening night who made me feel particularly welcome. I would also like to take this opportunity to say how much I enjoyed Mette's company during my stay. I believe that she has a fantastic career ahead of her and I hope that we will remain in contact, not just as colleagues but also as friends.

I guess I have come to realise that this is one of the many fantastic benefits of science. We get to travel the world and meet people who share not only similar academic obsessions but who are also wonderful people. I arrived back in Liverpool 9 pm on Wednesday night and had 3 lectures to give to undergraduate students the next day, the first one at 9 am! All in all, I had a great experience in Japan and I definitely recommend it to the future winners of the Young Investigator Award. A word of warning though: be prepared to battle the Jetlag!
