PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Thank you to the outgoing Board of Directors and all of the other volunteers that put in endless numbers of hours of their valuable free time to make Bronx Park the wonderful facility that it is, equal to any and envied by many facilities across Winnipeg. Each person has their own reason for putting time in during the year but as we look around we can see the spectacular results. On behalf of the East Kildonan and Elmwood areas, with heartfelt gratitude I thank each and every person who has selflessly given of themselves to Bronx Park.
This has been an incredibly challenging and satisfying year as our Board had overcome many obstacles and worked tirelessly to accomplish or advance improvements to our centre. These include: • Bringing negotiations with Good Neighbors, relations‐wise, to the verge of a happy, healthy conclusion. Many thanks to City managers for their invaluable help. We could not have come this far without you.
• Participating in renovating the grounds at Clara Hughes Recreation Park, honoring a great Elmwood Olympian who has represented all of Canada on a global level. Last summer a new playground, skateboard park, basketball poles and toboggan slide as well as new grassy area and picnic table and resting areas were created which has already made a huge impact on the local community. This summer we moved indoors as the field house will be almost completely renovated to create a building that is usable year‐round by the community. Again, thank you to the City, the Province, and the federal government for their dedication to this valuable oasis in the heart of Elmwood. Special thanks to Councillor Steen for his great support. Our community will readily assure you that it is much appreciated and well‐spent.
• Major upgrades to our website. Many thanks to Richard deChevigny of the RAD Network for bringing his talents to bear.
• In 2013 we became only the second community centre in Winnipeg to host a pit stop on Bike‐To‐Work Day. We did it again this year and this year we had two stops – one at Bronx Park and one at Clara Hughes Park.
• We partnered with the humanitarian organization, Dominican Vision, to transport huge hockey bags and cardboard boxes full of soccer and baseball uniforms to the Dominican Republic, where they were given to school children and others in the poorest parts of the country. This has made a great impact on their lives.

Bronx Park/Good Neighbors CribbageTOURNAMENT This Fall we will be expanding our tournament to twice monthly – held on the first and third Friday of each month*. At this time we are “Partners” only, so grab a friend and come on out for a fun evening. Entry fee is $10.00 per person. We pay out cash prizes for first, second and third place. 50/50 draw. Community News
Church of the Rock
Church of the Rock is one Church with different locations, and one of those locations happens to be at Bronx CC. The service runs every Sunday Morning in the gym at 10:25 am. There is live worship, on‐site pastors, many wonderful programs and of course a warm welcome for you!. The sermon will be the same at both locations each weekend – at Bronx Park it will be watched on the big screen. This past year Church of the Rock has been involved in several charitable events in the community including:
Singing in a Retirement Home – one of our groups went out to sing to the seniors at a retirement centre.
Clara Hughes Recreation Park – Community Clean‐ Up – On Sat. June 7 we had a group of our members at Clara Hughes Park to do a spring clean‐up including cutting grass, picking up garbage, cleaning gravel from the pathways, and painting the rink boards. It was a great event and many people passing through the park thought the park was looking wonderful!
Bronx Park CC Carnival – On Sun. June 8th the entire Church put on a free carnival for the community. There was everything grom free hotdogs, hamburgers, drinks, cookies, popcorn and of course freezies. We gave away a few flowers that people could take home for planting. We also had a bouncy castle, face painting, carnival games, and a special guest – one of the goalies from the Winnipeg Blues Hockey team was there to let the kids take shots on him! A city fire truck also showed up to give families a peek inside! A large number of families from the surrounding community showed up and said they all really enjoyed the carnival and the food.

FOLKLORAMA 2014 Congratulations on another successful year of Folklorama at the Bronx Park CC site! We were thrilled to host both the ROMANIAN Pavilion and ALO BRASIL for the second year in a row, and have so many people enjoy the festivities!
JIMCON 2014
JimCon is back and is proud to have the Bronx Park CC behind us again this year. JimCon is Winnipeg’s table top games convention. Named after one of its founders, JimCOn is a family friendly weekend of nothing but games. Our goal is to help expand and improve the gaming community of Winnipeg. So if you don’t know how to play a certain game – no problem! We have loads of games masters who love nothing more than to teach you the rules. If you have a competitive edge, join in a tournament. Go toe‐to‐toe with the best out there! Want to browse and try new games? Our games library has grown to house over 300 titles and continues to add new and exciting content. We want to show you that the world of table top gaming is for everyone. Come by and say hi to me during the weekend and we will play a game.

Urban Green Team This year we were fortunate to add Sam Flanjak to our team under the Green Team grant program. Sam has been working hard keeping the grass cut, and the grounds looking clean and fresh on a daily basis. Some of the larger projects he has worked on include the annual repainting of the rink boards, and this year helping to get our woodshop ready for the Grand Opening in August.

Bronx Farmer’s Market In June of this year we held an informal community meeting open to all, to explore the possibility of creating a Farmer’s Market at our centre. We had a very positive response from the community and will be having additional meetings in the fall. The Center’s vision is a market that would run every Saturday morning in the summer months, to be launched in the summer of 2015. We are still in the planning stages to determine if the idea is viable, and to assess the commitment of volunteers. This program will require Volunteer Coordinators to assume a leadership role in the development and ongoing management of the market. If you are interested in making a commitment to see this idea become a reality, please contact the facility manager.
Clara Hughes Building RenovationsBronx Park is pleased to announce that plans are proceeding with the start of the construction on July 28, 2014. During the period of construction the main building will be closed, but the outdoor facilities will be open to the public.
The renovations are expected to be completed towards the end of December, and ideally, the main building will be available for use during the skating season in 2014. When renovations are completed and the building is available for public use it will feature a multipurpose area, improved lighting, and upgraded washrooms.
Updates will be made available on our website when possible.
BRONX SOCCER It has been another great year for soccer at Bronx Park CC! This past spring we had eight 4/5 year old teams, and four 6 year old teams at the Timbits level. At the older age groups Bronx had two U7 Boys teams, two U7 Girls teams, two U8 Boys teams, U8 Girls, U9 Boys and U9 Girls, U10 Girls, U12 Girls, U14 Boys, and U16 Boys! That’s over 260 soccer players this year!. The soccer program is made possible by the dedication of the Convenors, Coaches, and parent support of this program. Thank you to our Timbit Convenor Jason Macdonald, and our Soccer Convenor Ted Geddert. A big thank you to all the parents who stepped up as Coaches, Assistant Coaches and Administrative Support to the Convenors for registration and data entry. The position of Soccer Convenor is presently vacant and we still need a Soccer Coordinator to take over this volunteer position for the 2015 soccer season in order to have a soccer program.
BRONX HOCKEY PROGRAM & REGISTRATION Information on Hockey Registration dates and times will be available on our Bronx Park CC website. As with all of our sports programs, the hockey program also relies on the support of volunteers to run. The position of Hockey Convenor is presently vacant and will need to be filled if there is to be a hockey program this year. Consider volunteering your time so that our kids have the chance to play at their home club.
INDOOR SOCCER REGISTRATION Registration for Indoor Soccer will take place in late August, early September. Registration dates will be posted on our website at www.bronxpark.ca as well as at the community centre.

Come and Join Us for the official dedication ceremony of our newly renovated wood shop on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at 10:45 am. We are very excited about this one‐of‐a‐kind fully equipped facility that will be open for all to use. Course registration will be available following the ceremony.

A SAFETY CARD will be required by anyone who is using the woodshop. The Safety Card may be obtained by taking one of the courses offered (included in the course), or by attending the Wood Shop Safety Orientation (see below).
Intro to Woodworking for Women In this hands‐on course you will learn the safe use of hand and power tools while making 2 projects. Machinery and tools used include the jointer, planer, table saw, band saw, jig saw, circular saw, drill press, mitre saw, drill and router. Also included is shop safety, measuring, fasteners and basic joinery. Material cost is $45 ‐ $85 and will be discussed at the first class. The Safety Card will be given upon completion of this course. Fee: $120.00 Duration: 10 weeks Dates/Times: Tuesdays, Sept. 23 – Nov. 25 7 – 9:30
Wood Shop Safety Orientation For experienced woodworkers who would like to use the wood shop on a drop‐in basis. This one evening class will acquaint you with the safety procedures of the wood shop and the safety concerns with each major piece of equipment. The Safety Card will be given upon completion of this course. Fee: $20.00 Duration: 1 day (1.5 hours) *Additional dates and times will be scheduled as the need arises. Wood Shop Drop In Drop‐ins are open to anyone who is willing to obtain a Safety Card by attending the Wood Shop Safety Orientation or taking an intro to woodworking class. Bring your own materials and supplies and use our wood shop space and equipment. Fee applies to the whole block of time, no matter how long you stay! A knowledgeable volunteer will supervise the drop‐in time to ensure that equipment is used in a safe manner. Fee: $8.00 per visit Days/Times: Wed. Sept. 24 to Dec. 17 12:00 – 4:00 pm Sat. Get Involved in Your Community
Canadian Diabetes Collection Bin In case you haven’t already noticed, Bronx Park CC is now home to 2 Canadian Diabetes collection bins. Located in the front of our parking lot – it is now more convenient than ever for community members to donate their unneeded or unwanted items to a worthy cause. Proceeds go to support the work of the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Good Neighbors Senior Centre Bronx Park CC is also home to the Good Neighbors Active Living Centre – which offers programs and services to ages 55+. Pick up your copy of their newsletter at Bronx or visit their website for full details.
Volunteering at Bronx Park Bronx Park relies on volunteer support for many of the functions of the community centre. The Board of Directors is a fully volunteer board, including our Sports Convenors, and Equipment Manager. All sports teams rely on parent coaches and support to run. We are currently recruiting for the positions of SOCCER CONVENOR (ages 7 & up) and HOCKEY CONVENOR. If you are interested in either of these positions please contact the facility manager.
A Volunteer opportunity also exists to assist in the publication of our next Newsletter. This position would include distributing advertising materials to local businesses and assisting with the administrative aspects of the newsletter.

FACILITY STAFF – Permanent Year‐Round Part‐Time Our facility staff are responsible for setting up and taking down for rentals, light duty cleaning and overall supervision of the Centre during open hours. ICE MAKING STAFF – Full time Seasonal We require experienced ice makers for our 2014‐2015 season for both Bronx Park CC and Clara Hughes sites.
SOCIAL STAFF – Permanent Part‐Time/Casual We are accepting applications for part‐time/casual BARTENDERS and SOCIAL SUPPORT/SECURITY staff. These positions are year round with our busiest times being Oct. – June. Complete job descriptions, hours of work, and required qualifications are available by contacting the Facility Manager.
