The folks behind Riverdance have a new thundering Irish dance show poised to tour North America, but don’t dare

call it “Riverdance II.”Heartbeat of Home integrates the Emer-

ald Isle’s signature high-stepping with the tango, the flamenco, Cuban salsa and even hip-hop, reflecting the growing multicultur-alism of Ireland since Riverdance debuted two decades ago.

“We felt that together with the fusion of other cultures, we could broaden out the base and embrace and display what 20 years have done to Irish music and dance,” said producer Moya Doherty.

The new show kicks off at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in To-ronto, then it makes stops in Chicago’s Oriental Theatre, De-troit’s Fisher Theatre and Bos-ton’s Wang Theater.

The show features about 30 dancers and a 10-piece band playing a score written by Gold-en Globe-nominated composer Brian Byrne, who created the score for the film Albert Nobbs. Lyrics and the narrative are by novelist Joseph O’Connor.

The first part of the show is built around a sea voyage of people leaving one country for another. The second half fea-tures the mixing of cultures in this new land.

“In some ways it mirrors the journey of Ireland in the past two decades,” Doherty said by phone from Dublin. “We were a monoculture in 1994 almost. And we have become quite multicultural. So in many ways what we were also attempting to parallel was

John McColgan, who directs the new show as he did with Riverdance, said Heart-beat of Home “reflects a modern world” and modernizes Irish step dancing by “opening it up to other cultures and inviting other cul-tures to dance with us.”

The show made its debut this fall in Dub-lin and has already been a hit in Beijing and Shanghai. It featured some dancers who were babies when Riverdance elevated a pro-vincial dance to a professional art form.

Riverdance first premiered on the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest as a seven-minute seg-ment and opened at Dublin’s Point Theatre on Feb. 9, 1995, at a time of renewed Irish opti-mism and pride surrounding the onset of the booming “Celtic Ti-ger” economy.

It has since been seen by an estimated 25 million people in 40 countries, from Red Square to the Great Wall of China. It made its American debut in 1996 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and packed a Broadway theatre for 18 months in 2000–2001. Riverdance will celebrate its 20th year in 2014 with a new UK and Eu-ropean tour.

“The international language of dance is probably one of the reasons for its phenomenal success,” said Doherty. “And, hey, it’s fun. It’s entertainment.”

It was a chance encounter be-tween legends

from the worlds of film and music, and it resulted in an international phenomenon.

In 1996 at the Venice Film Fes-tival, Robert De Niro approached Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor, and asked if they had ever considered cre-ating a musical

based on the hard-rock band’s work. Six years later, with De Niro and Jane

Rosenthal’s company Tribeca Theatrical Productions on board as one of the produc-ers, We Will Rock You opened in London’s West End, where it continues to galvanize audiences. Featuring more than 24 Queen songs, this electrifying spectacle—now in its 11th year in London—has since played in some 20 countries and sold over 15,000,000 tickets worldwide. Beginning in September, audiences throughout the country will have a chance to see what they’ve been missing, with the launching of the first North Ameri-can tour of We Will Rock You.

From 1973, when they released their first recording, until the death of lead singer and keyboard player Freddie Mercury in 1991, Queen was one of the most popular rock groups in the world, racking up 18 No. 1 albums and selling out stadiums around the world. In fact, Queen’s two concerts at Rock in Rio in Brazil in January 1985 saw the band play in front of 350,000 each night, setting a world record for the biggest paying audience ever. Their stage shows were flam-boyant, their recording techniques elaborate, their style aggressive.

“We’re the Cecil B. DeMille of rock and roll, always wanting to do things bigger and better,” Mercury famously said.

In addition to Mercury, the band included May on lead guitar, Tay-lor on drums, and John Deacon on bass guitar. Their heavy-metal, hard-rock sound was inspired by all kinds of music, including pop, dis-co, ragtime, folk, and opera.

Among their best-known hits are “Somebody to Love”; the ground-breaking, six-minute operetta, “Bohemian Rhap-sody”; “Another One Bites the Dust”; “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”; “I Want to Break Free,” fa-mous for its music video in which the band dressed in women’s clothes; and two num-bers familiar to anyone who has ever stepped foot in a stadium or arena, “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.”

Incorporating the band’s vast and eclec-tic body of work into a book musical while retaining the ex-citement, the icon-oclasm, and the sound of a Queen concert proved to be a huge challenge for best-selling au-thor Ben Elton, who was invited to write the script.

“I had almost given up trying to find a story that could contain the incredible rich-ness, wit and va-riety of Queen’s greatest hits,” says

Elton, a triple-threat stand-up comedian, writer, and director. “Then the idea came to me: a world where young people are denied the right to make music for themselves, to do what Elvis and the Beatles did—form bands, write songs, start a revolution in their heads. I really thought Queen could illustrate that beautifully. And the fact that they are the stuff of legend meant that it was a terrifically fun story to weave.”

We Will Rock You is set 300 years in the future, on a planet once called Earth that is now controlled by a corporation. Globaliza-tion is complete. Individuality is taboo. Ev-eryone watches the same movies, wears the same clothes, and thinks the same thoughts. Music is generated by the corporation’s com-puters, rock music is unheard, and all musi-cal instruments are banned. But resistance, by a bunch of rebels known as the Bohemi-ans, is brewing.

The Bohemians, who are each named af-ter pop and rock icons, want nothing more than to write their own music, play their own instruments, and rock—as in rock and roll—the planet. The rebels are led by a character called Galileo, whose name (along with that of his girlfriend, Scaramouche) is inspired by lyrics in “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

The show, with a cast of 24 and 10 mu-sicians, is directed by Elton and choreo-graphed by Arlene Phillips. Music supervi-sion is by May and Taylor.

“Creating the show with Ben was very much a three-way thing,” says Taylor. “It was great because he was a pleasure to work with, and because he has such a fertile mind. He never stops churning out ideas.”

“The amazing bonus is that Ben’s script subtly works as a metaphor, too,” says May. “People definitely come out of the theater feeling that in a strange way they know us, Queen, our struggle and our journey.”

Woven around Elton’s witty and engaging script, the musical also succeeds in captur-ing the raucous energy of a Queen concert, and lovingly and impeccably recreating the group’s music.
