In 1927, a reporter for the New York Tele-graph asked reporter turned playwright Maurine Watkins to talk about how she came up with the story for the original

play Chicago. She responded, “I’ll tell you. But don’t you love a good murder?”

Watkins nabbed her first job as a reporter with the Chicago Tribune immediately after college earning more than double a starting

‘cub’s’ wage. Capturing the eye of her edi-tors, she was quickly assigned a beat cover-ing Chicago’s murders. Her popular, colorful reports won her assignments and more ink.

When asked about it, she told the New York Telegraph, “I got to the point where I prayed for murders. Not that you have to pray very long in vain in Chicago. But I prayed for good murders, and then I prayed that I would

be sent out on murders. When I realized I was getting a murder-story complex, I quit. But I doubt if I’ll ever outgrow my love for murders. That’s why I wrote this play about them.”

With a series of fascinating stories about powerful, beautiful murderesses given to her from the pages of real life, she did what any good writer does, she penned them into an edge-of-your-seat story, the story of Chicago.

Almost fifty years after its premiere, Fred Ebb, John Kander, and Bob Fosse took Watkins fascinating play and turned it into Chicago: A Musical Vaudeville. The show opened on Broadway in June of 1975 and ran for more than 900 days garnering mixed reviews. The musical was nominated for more than 10 Tony® Awards (including Jerry Orbach for Best Actor), two Drama Desk awards, and three Olivier awards. While the original production of A Chorus Line cap-tured most of the 1975/76 Tonys, the musi-cal won the 1975 Drama Desk award for Outstanding Lighting Design. After a short London production, the musical closed and lay silent for nearly 20 years.

Don’t you love a good murder?83 years, 23 countries, & more than 60 awards say yes.

In 1996 New York City Centre’s Encores! program, which takes rarely heard works of America’s most important composers and lyricists and gives them a chance to be per-formed, selected Chicago for its three-show season. After an enthusiastic reception, pro-ducers Barry and Fran Weissler had the re-vival up and on stage at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on November 14, 1996. The show soon moved to the Shubert Theatre where it played until 2003 when it became a New York institution at the Ambassador Theatre on Broadway.

Since its revival, it’s hard to believe that such a dramatic and award winning piece of American musical history was once consid-ered “rarely heard.” After 11 record-break-ing years on Broadway, the current revival has been performed in 23 countries, trans-lated into ten languages and been graced by many stars across the country. Bebe Neuwirth, Ann Reinking, James Naughton, Joel Grey, Jasmine Guy, Sharon Lawrence, Marilu Henner, Sandy Duncan, Michael C. Hall, Wayne Brady, Melanie Griffith, Paige

Davis, Jennifer Holliday, Robert Urich, Alan Thicke, Angie Stone, Taye Diggs, Vicki Lewis, Brooke Shields, Kevin Richardson, Huey Lewis, Robin Givens, John O’Hurley, Usher, Lisa Rinna, Harry Hamlin, Aida Tur-turro, Vincent Pastore, Brian McKnight and John Schneider have all done a little time with the cast.

With over 16,000 performances for more than 18 million people, Chicago has grossed more than $850 million. That’s a far cry from cub reporter Maurine Watkins’ $50 a week salary to pen the exploits of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery. A salacious story in 1926, sul-try musical in 1975 and show stopping block-buster today, the tales of Roxie Hart, Velma Kelly and Billy Flynn seem like they could be taken from today’s tabloid newsstand. It appears that the answer to Watkin’s “Don’t you love a good murder?” is a most resound-ing, Yes, yes we do. n
