TO THE PROFESSION.In presenting their list of Pill formulas to the pro-

fession in book shape, McKesson & Robbins have had inview convenience and facility of reference, as the size andform readily admits of its being; carried in the vest pocket. The following points are respectfully submitted :

RELIABILITY.—We have expended much at-tention and money in perfecting our machinery, to in-sure exactness anil uniformity of the masses and pills, and have engaged superior analytical ability, to guaran-tee quality of ingredients. Every drug and chemical usedin manufacture is carefully tested. To prove correctnessin the synthesis, the first of every month, all sizes of ourQuinine Pills are analyzed. The same care is observedwith the scammony, aloes, etc., which we use in ourCathartic Pills.

COATING. —The coating of McKesson & Rob-bins* Pills is applied by a special process, and differsfrom all others in the fact that it is continuous, air-tight, and not porous, which are very important consid-erations in many delicate preparations, as phosphorus, phosphorus and iron, and other compounds. By thiscoating, the mass is perfectly protected from exposure tothe air, which is not the ca«e with sugar-coated, com-pressed, or so-called soluble pills.

CHANGE IN COLOR OF QUININEPlLLS.—reply to inquiries in regard to Change in

Color of our Quinine Pills, we beg to state that thechange is due to our using Puke White Sulphate ofQuinine, instead of Unbleached of the guaranteed stan-dard of 90 per cent. Sulphate of Quinine as formerly, (thecustom having been to employ 111 ounces of UnbleachedQuinine, in place of 100 ounces of White Quinine). Thischange to White has been made to avoid misrepresenta-tion. The mass of our Pills has also been greatly im-proved, in appearance and solubility, by the use of ournew excipient.

SOLU B I LITY.—The solubility of our coatingand pills, may be readily and practically attested, by theadministration of a dose of some formula which is pos-itive in its action, as cathartic, quinine, etc. The Gel-atine we use(the same as is employed in making jelly for

Page 4: OFG.C. Pills and Granules · thesick)is quickly soluble in the stomach, atthe same timeit protects the massfrom the air before being ad- ministered, and prevents thetasteoftheingredientsfrom

the sick) is quickly soluble in the stomach, at the sametime it protects the mass from the air before being ad-ministered, and prevents the taste of the ingredientsfrombeing communicated to the mouth of the patient, beforeswallowing.

SHAPE.—lt must be granted that the capsule orspheroidal shape is the form best adapted to the throat, and that the gelatine completely covers the taste, andrenders the pill capable of being easily swallowed by thepatient and accepted by the stomach, without nausea—-important desiderata to the patient.

PERMANENCE.—The question whether Mc-Kesson & Robbins’ Gelatine-Coated Quinine Pills willremain unaffected in warm, damp climates, seems to besatisfactorily answerd in the following abstract ofa letterfrom Aspinwall ;

u Commissary Department,Panama Railroad, Aspinwall, U. S. C.

“Messrs. McKesson & Robbins.u Gentlemen.—Almost everything perishes rapidly in

this terrible climate, but your Gelatine-Coated Pills inbottles keep remarkably well. The dampness does notappear to have the least effect upon them, as long as theyarekept in bottles. Yours respectfully,

“THOS. M. CASH, Commissary.”Price lists and samples furnished upon Application.Private formulas of 3,000 or more pills, made and

coated to order.McKesson & Robbins’ Pills have tf outlived the period

of fashionable novelty,” and become deservedly popu-lar with physicians and patients, on account of efficacy, reliability, and the facility with which they may beswallowed; and, although infallibility, which is incom-patible with anything human, is not claimed, still anycharge against them should be scrutinized for the animusof self-interest, and answered by practical tests.

McKesson k Robbins'Gelatine-Coated

Pills and Granules.WE take occasion to thank the profession for their

patronage of our Gelatine-Coated Pills, and requesta continuanceof the same. Full lines of our Pills havebeen established in all the large centres of trade, and inmany of the smaller cities. We would advise thoseliving in remote places to order, when practicable, orig-inal bottles of 100 each, to avoid substitution, and we willbe happy to mail any formulas upon our list, not pro-curable nearer home, upon receipt of price.

We regret to announce that our attention has beencalled to several Instances where other pills have beensubstituted by druggists when ours were desired, and evenspecified, by the physician. We believe that such in-stances are rare, but in some cases physicians have notifiedus of such breach of honor in the druggist.

Pharm. Ass7 n, Sept., 7 76, in which he statesthat Phosphorus should never be administered insubstance, and if a coating be used, he commendsGelatine.

Many of the most eminent Physicians throughout thecountry, among whom are leading specialists in thetreatment of Neurotic diseases, assert that McKes-son & Robbins’ Phosphorus Pills are the most ra-tional medium yet found for exhibiting Phosphorus.

A physician in St. Louis, who has for some time beenusing our Pills, prescribed il Gelatine-Coated Phos-phorus Pills, 1-50 gr.,” intending to have theMcKesson & Robbins’ Pills dispensed, but did notperceive the usual effects after administering themto the patient. Upon investigation, he found thePills resembled ours somewhat in external appear-ance, but on cutting one open, he found it containedhardly a trace ofPhosphorus. The doctor went tothe druggist, who had dispensed the prescription, and found that, not having our Phosphorus Pills instock, he had dispensed an imitation ; the druggistclaimed that he was warranted in so doing, as thephysician had not taken the precaution to put thename McKesson & Robbins upon his prescription, although the physician had been in the habit ofspecifying our Pills, and the druggist knew it. Wehave had our attention called to several cases ofthis character, regarding the Quinine Pills, MorphiaGranules and others, when, on failing to obtainresults, the physicians have found that they werebeing imposed upon by imitations ; this has inducedthem to write “ McKesson & Robbins’ G. C. Pills ”

in full upon their prescriptions and add, “send noothers.” We have full lines of our Pills in all ofthe large, and in most of the small cities, and thereis no excuse for substituting imitations.

POTASSIUM, BROMIDE, 2 and 5 grs.QUIMDIA. SULPHATE, 1, 2 and 3 grs.

This Cinchona Alkaloid undoubtedly approaches thenearest, in therapeutical value, to Sulphate of Quin-ia. We have been requested to add the pills to ourlist, so that their efficacy, as compared with Qui-nine pills, may be tested, the prices being half thatof the latter.

McKesson & Robbins’ Quinine Pills are now acceptedby mostof our leading physicians as the most reli-able, and have very generally displaced the use ofother ready-made Quinine Pills. They are alsoused by many of the most discriminating prac-titioners, who would not use other coated Pills be-cause they could not depend upon their solubilityor action, while, with McKesson & Robbins’ Gela-tine-Coated Pills, they have always received speedyand satisfactory results, due to the fact that theyare quickly soluble, and prepared with great care. They are the favorite pills with patients, the cap-sule shape rendering them so very easy to swallow, even by children. Physicians have reported casesof patients, suffering from severe ulceration of thethroat, particularly diptheria, in which they foundit impossible to administer the round pill, but ongiving the McKesson & Robbins’ Gelatine-CoatedPills, the patient was able to swallow the latterwithout difficulty. We call special attention toour five grain Quinines, which, owing to formand nature of coating, are as easily swallowed asthe ordinary two grain. We have recently madegreat improvements in the manufacture and excip-ients of these pills, all our Quinine Pills being

SNOW-WHITE IN APPEARANCE AND VERY SOFT IN-TERNALLY.

In reply to inquiries in regard to Change in Colorof our Quinine Pills, we beg to state that thechange is due to our using Pure White Sulphateof Quinine, instead of Unbleached of the guar-anteed standard of 90 per cent. Sulphate of Quin-ine as formerly, (the custom having been to employ111 ounces of' Unbleached Quinine, in place of 100ounces of White Quinine). This change to whitehas been made to avoid misrepresentation. Themass of our Pills has also been greatly improved,in appearance and solubility, by the use of our newexcipient.

QUININE, SULPHO-CARBOLATE, i, 2,3 and 5 grs. This Salt ofQuinine has been very much used in

some of our extreme malarial districts during thepast two years. Those, who have tested it verycarefully,* claim that it possesses a most positivespecific action in the treatment of fever and ague, and has proved itself eminently superior to the Sul-phate ofQuinine in all malarial fevers.

GRANULES.Physicians have experienced the need ofa reliable

and pleasant form for administering these more potentremedies. The wantof reliability, as exhibited in the gran-ules of the market by the varying action following theiradministration, has caused them to be avoided—and veryjustly—by most practitioners, who have preferred ratherto use solutions, and trust to the custom of dropping, orusing a teaspoon to measure their portions, althoughnearly as uncertain, owing to great difference in thesizes of teaspoons, and the fact that drops vary with theconditions and form of surface from which they flow.

In our preparations we have taken special precautionsby enforcing our system of checking the weights, and, atlarge expense, have had our machines for division ofthe substances so carefully and correctly constructed, asto insure an exactness never before maintained in thisclass of preparations. We can, therefore, afford assur-ance to physicians of correct weight and perfect division. Our granules have been appreciated and are being ex-tensively used by the profession. McKesson &. Bobbins’ Fluid Extracts.

22

McKesson k Robbins’FLUID EXTRACTS

These Extracts are prepared by cold re-percolation,thereby avoiding the use of heat and exposure to the air, which impair those active principles, in which the virtuesof most vegetable remedies consist. By experience wehave determined the greater efficacy of certain men-struums in the exhaustion of the virtues of differentdrugs ; in some, glycerin being a valuable adjunct to thealcohol—in others, objectionable. Each drug is carefullystudied by itself, and great care is taken that each lot ofthe same extract should be uniform with the preceding, the specific gravity, where the same menstruum is used, being a test. The process that we employ has been en-dorsed by the leading Pharmaceutical journals, and byour best chemists, arid every thinking Pharmacist willreadily acknowledge the danger of applying heat to med-icinal drugs. Formulas for making Syrups , Tinctures ,etc. , from our Fluid Extracts are printed on the labels.

Each Pint of our Extracts represents one pound ofthe raw material, and the dose can be regulated accord-ingly. The only exceptions are Fluid Extract of Opium, one pint of which is equivalent to 1 1-4 ozs. of GumOpium, and Fluid Extract of Vanilla, which contains4 ozs. to the pint.

Fluid Extracts ofall new remedies made promptly tofill experimental inquiries.

Physicians need not hesitate to advise druggists tocarry our Fluid Extracts in stock.
