WELCOME FROM THE FEI PRESIDENT

particular with regards to the FEI World Equestrian Games™ should very much be in line with the decisions we make with regards to Olympic formats. It is this cohesiveness which will make our sport more attractive and more readily understood so that we can appeal to new fans and new television audiences.

We then lead into three dedicated sessions on the future of our Olympic disciplines and the proposed format changes. There will be debate around some of the proposals, which is precisely the point of these meetings. However it is important to note that these changes are not just for the sake of change, and whilst we certainly should never lose sight of who we are as a sport, we also need to have the courage to make decisions that will have profound effects on our sport globally. All the supporting documents for the Sports Forum including these proposals, are available here (http://www.fei.org/fei/about-fei/sportsforum/2015) on the FEI website. We also have a dedicated online discussion platform so that you (whether you are a participant at the forum or not) can voice your opinions and get the discussion started even prior to the Sports Forum commencing.

In keeping with that notion of cohesiveness across the Championship and Olympic Games formats, we will also host a session on the Tuesday afternoon for the future of our non-Olympic disciplines as well as Para-Equestrian prior to the Reining round table which concludes the meetings & sessions for the FEI Sports Forum 2015.

I am looking forward to some very productive debates and discussions around the topics selected for this year’s Sports Forum and encourage everyone to contribute to the debate and voice their opinions so that the Forum continues to serve the purpose it was created for. And last, but not least, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the many speakers and experts from various fields who have accepted our invitation to be panellists during the Sports Forum.

Ingmar De VosFEI President

I am delighted to present you with the programme for this year’s FEI Sports Forum, which as we have demonstrated since its inception in 2012, has a profound impact on the way we move forward as a sport and the decisions we make as a governing body.

I am not entirely surprised as to how essential this annual meeting has become given the topics we address year after year and the engagement we get from the greater equestrian community. There are many different perspectives and interests in our sport, so it is vital that we have an open dialogue on the issues we face and the decisions we need to make collectively in order to make our sport succeed in today’s global sporting industry.

This year’s edition tackles some very big topics, with an emphasis on the future of our Olympic disciplines and a Reining Round Table. The Forum gets started with an evaluation and discussion on the future of the FEI World Equestrian Games™ which then leads into a presentation by IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell on the Olympic Agenda 2020. Although these topics may not appear directly related, they are. Decisions we make with regards to our Championship formats and in

WELCOME BY JAMES E. HENDERSON

On behalf of everyone at IMD,let me welcome you all to the FEI Sports Forum 2015.

It is a tremendous privilege for us to again host so many leaders and stakeholders from the world of equestrian sport.

IMD’s mission is to be the world’s leader in enabling the development of global leaders as individuals, teams or organizations. Global leaders are those who can shape and lead organization transformation journeys in complex and uncertain environments.

Could it be possible that FEI is on its own transformation journey?

From our perspective, one of the critical ways to engage in organization transformations in the world of business is to create venues for dialogue. Forums allow critical stakeholders to voice their opinions and views. Forums create a venue of ‘fair process’ where all key stakeholders are involved and heard even if the final decisions or votes are not favourable to some.

It is no different in the world of sport and sport federations.

I trust that our congenial Swiss setting will provide an inspiring venue for debating and discussing your transformation journeys.

OLYMPIC AGENDA 2020

Following a unanimous vote in favour of the Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms at the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Extraordinary Session in December 2014, the three equestrian Olympic disciplines - Jumping, Dressage and Eventing - will be holding sessions to discuss their future within the Olympic movement. During this introductory session, IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell will present the Olympic Games 2020 strategic framework, its impact on equestrian sports and open discussion on how the FEI as a whole can meet the 2020 reforms from governance down.

Key recommendations affecting equestrianism which were approved by IOC members include a change from a sport based to an event based programme, where a maximum of 310 events and 10,500 athletes will be allowed at the Olympic Games. Throughout the discipline sessions, discussions will be held with the aim of strengthening each discipline’s position within the Olympic movement and how they can meet all the Olympic ideals and new 2020 reforms.

Recent developments have resulted in a strong position for Dressage, with the Freestyle competition selling out arenas in several countries and winning increased interest for Dressage. While there is much to be proud of and applauded, Dressage is not a big player in the world of sports and therefore must constantly look to the future. In order to build on its position as a main equestrian sport, it is important that we approach new ideas and concepts with an open mind to bring in the necessary changes to grow interest in Dressage and appeal to the wider sporting market. Twenty-five years ago some visionaries had the difficult task of introducing the freestyle, and today we can say that this test saved the sport.

It is by making Dressage more attractive that we will bring in new followers, spectators, sponsors and develop broader media interest in the sport.

Throughout this session we will be discussing three aspects of the sport: the Olympic format (with specific focus on Olympic Agenda 2020); the format for the FEI World Equestrian Games™ and other Games and Championships; all other factors to increase the attractiveness of Dressage.

The aim of this session is to increase the interest in Dressage without losing the current, core fans. The National Federations and all stakeholders need to be aware that Dressage requires some changes to enable growth and we welcome all thoughts, ideas and discussions in this process.

EVENTING FUTURE

Following the implementation of Olympic Agenda 2020, Eventing, like all Olympic disciplines have been reviewing the sport to ensure they are attractive, modern, TV and spectator friendly in line with the IOC’s vision.

The Eventing Future session will begin with a presentation from Charles Barnett, who, further to the request of the FEI has been conducting an audit into Eventing with the purpose of identifying factors that may affect Eventing as an Olympic Sport. The project includes examining ways of widening the appeal of the sport both from a spectator and participant point of view and to enhance spectator engagement with the sport both from an attendee and TV audience. Part of this project is to thoroughly review the safety aspects of the sport.

Following the presentation by Mr Barnett the Eventing Committee will propose a number of changes to the Eventing format which could be used for both the Olympic Games and other FEI Championships. The proposals will focus on the format and qualification of the team and individual competitions, with details relating to the level of competition, number of team members and order of participation.

The session will end with the proposal of further points to be discussed at Eventing dedicated Open Forums later this year. These points will be around Levels and Formats, Technical Rules and Saddlery among others.

As host of The Grand National, one of the top three annual sporting events in the world, Charles’ tenure of office at Aintree resulted in many difficult situations to deal with such as the false start and void Grand National in 1993, the IRA bomb threat and subsequent evacuation in 1997 as well as numerous other small and large matters to deal with.

He joined Ascot Racecourse as Chief Executive in May 2007. Following the £200m redevelopment in 2006, part of Charles’ remit was to consolidate Ascot’s position as the best racecourse in the world and as an outstanding international sporting, leisure and events’ destination. JUMPING FUTURE

Like the two other Olympic discipline sessions, the Jumping Future session will be looking at the format of Games and Championships to put forward a number of proposals to develop the sport of Jumping, solidify its position within the Olympic movement and increase awareness and popularity of the sport.

The Jumping Committee has developed an innovative proposal for the future format of the Olympic Games, allowing for the participation of more nations, as well as a more compact competition format, easier for the media and public to follow, with completely separate individual and team competitions. The Committee is aware that opinions vary on the proposed format of three athletes per team and no drop score; the Sports Forum provides the ideal opportunity for stakeholders to fully debate this issue.

With regard to the FEI World Equestrian Games™, experience has shown the need to limit participation in the Jumping event, not only for organisational reasons but also to ensure exciting, top-level sport. To ensure that NFs from all regions of the world have an equal opportunity to qualify, the Jumping Committee has proposed a qualification system through the FEI Nations Cup™ series as well as a Nations Ranking to allow 24 teams to qualify in addition to the home team; there will also be 25 individual quota places that can be earned through the Longines Rankings with an equal distribution of 14 places from all geographical regions (two per region) as well as 11 additional places worldwide.

As the FEI World Equestrian Games™ and the Olympic Games are considered to be Games at the highest level of the sport, and as the event serves as the primary team qualification for the Olympics, in the Committee’s opinion the formats for both of these Games should be strongly aligned. It has therefore been proposed to use the same competition format for the FEI World Equestrian Games™ and the Olympics.

Other areas which will be presented include the Event Classification System (ECS) and CSI Invitation System providing updates to ongoing work for the ECS and proposals for linking the CSI Invitation System to the number Longines Rankings points available at the event.

The Jumping Committee looks forward to a lively discussion on each of the above topics and hopes that a large number of stakeholders will be present at the Sports Forum to debate these important issues.

NON-OLYMPIC DISCIPLINES AND PARA-EQUESTRIAN FUTURE

This session will provide the opportunity for the FEI Non-Olympic Sports – Driving, Endurance, Vaulting and Reining – and Para-Equestrian to discuss and give recommendations to improve Championship formats and increase the overall appeal. Based on the sessions on the future of the FEI World Equestrian Games™ and proposals put forward in the dedicated Olympic sport discussions, this session is an opportunity for the remaining FEI disciplines to reflect on formats for future Championships.

The Driving committee will hold a discussion on the inclusion of the Four-in-Hand class at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ with specific focus on the costs involved.

The Endurance Committee will be putting forward a number of proposals including a review of the qualification criteria, how the number of Championship competitors are established, plus reviews of the event format, venue and track design to enable a better test of the horse and rider’s skill as well as increased access for spectators.

The Vaulting Committee will look to introduce a Nations format with Team classification at Championships as well as posing the question of whether compulsories are still relevant at Championship level.
