To those who joined NYP Primers this year, a warm welcome to the family!! Greetings to the senior Primers too! NYP Primers is not just an event-based CCA as some may describe it, but truly a family where we look out for one another and have fun together! In this issue of OHANA!, we have featured the many fun-filled events that happened from the month of April to August. Into my second year in NYP Primers, I honestly still enjoy all of them! Being able to reminisce about the experiences I had with my previous group and to share the joy and laughter with a new group of friends is a ton of fun! I hope all of you had a great time throughout the events as well! We would also like to take this opportunity to wish those with upcoming examinations all the best, as we look forward to seeing all of you at our future events. “Primers is an awesome CCA to me. Being in the EXCO allows me to grow constantly, in terms of leadership and communication skills with others. Another area of development is the ability to socialise with new friends and make them feel at ease.” Bobby Thedores TanPresident

“I am honoured and amazed to be part of the EXCO. Though it is not going to be an easy journey, we can learn and grow together as a family. I hope that we will be able to plan better events and watch as the club grows not only in terms of quantity, but quality as well. I also hope that everyone in Primers will truly understand the meaning of CASHAWA and OHANA.” JinYin Lee Vice-President

INTRODUCTION OF EXCO

“I was surprised when I was invited to join the EXCO, and was wor-ried that I couldn’t perform a good job. However, with the guidance from my leaders, mentors and friends, I believe we can see Primers grow to be bigger and better. In this journey of serving in the EXCO, I also hope that our relationships with one another in the EXCO will become stronger and last for a long time.” Quek Wei Pang Treasurer/Logistics Head

“I am glad to be given the opportunity to learn more in this journey as part of the EXCO. I hope that all of us will be able to work well with one another, and grow as a team. I also really hope to see everyone in Primers grow in character, and that we will be able to rise up as a club.” Lim Zi Xuan Administration Head

“I was shocked when asked to join the EXCO, but I appreciate how the officers chose to put aside my flaws and focus on my strengths. I hope that in the EXCO, we will learn to care, share and wait for one another and that we will work together as one family. OHANA! APRIL ~ AUGUST 2014 |7

Between each academic year, a cohort of students graduates while a new batch matriculates. To keep the various CCAs and clubs sustain-able, NYP organises a recruitment drive termed as Club Crawl once a year. On 21st to 24th April, NYP Primers had our own booth set up,

“Being part of the booth committee was a new experience for me. I learnt the importance of being responsible and the strength a group brings to spur one another on!” -Ke Xin

On 29th April, NYP Primers had our Welcome Party to formally receive the new members into the club. An annual event held after Club Crawl, this was a chance to share with them more about NYP Primers! Mass ice-breaker games were conducted and the senior Primers put up performances for the participants. Our captain, Kenny, also welcomed the people with an emphatic speech. Overall, the participants received a better under-standing of what the club does yearly and opportunities were created for them to make new friends!

“Considering it my first time planning an event, it was tiring to meet up every week. But having witnessed the success of the event gave me a sense of achieve-ment! It would not have been possible without the hard work of the committee members, and I learnt that planning an event is not a one man show but a team effort!” -Danielle Goh

and with the support of senior Prim-ers, we worked hard at promoting our club, drawing interests from the first-years and seniors, and at the end had more than 400 sign ups!

NYP Primers runs an orientation camp at the start of every new academic year. Targeted at mainly freshies, but not forgetting our senior members as well, Primers Orientation Camp (POC) aims to welcome the students into the Primers family, instilling in them a sense of belonging through the many new friendships forged after the games!

Revolved around the theme of Superheroes, camp participants saw themselves assigned to either of the 2 families, Marvel or DC, and further assigned to one of the 4 superhero groups in that family! It was fun and amusing as the campers bonded through the various games, ranging from being blindfolded to getting drenched with water and even performing skits! Besides all the interactive activities, POC also attempts to inculcate positive values into the students throughout the course of the camp itself.

“POC was a camp that opened many doors of opportunities for me, as I socialised and made new friends. Throughout the various games, I felt a strong sense of be-longing and bond with my group members. To me, Primers is not just a CCA, but a family where we look out for one another.”- Meng Wee

Coined as CASHAWA, it represents 3 components; Care, Share, Wait. These attitudes were infused conscientiously day by day in every activity, even down to during meal times!

“The main takeaway I had for this camp is the values of caring, sharing and waiting, and my group clearly demonstrated all 3 aspects of that during the camp! We cared by looking out for one another during the games, shared our food during meal times with other groups, and waited for one another as we completed the vari-ous games as a group!”- Jaslyn Wong

Also, what’s a camp without the Family Heads and Group Leaders! Indeed, they play an absolutely important role in rallying their people and driving the energy level of the whole camp experience to a high! Without them, there could be the most interesting and exciting games planned, but it will never achieve that same degree of unity and family spirit imbued into the participants at the end!

“POC was really fun as I made new friends! The times we spent playing games and having our meals together were really memorable for me. It was indeed an enjoyable camp that kick started my journey in Primers, and it showed me how Primers is more than just a CCA; it’s a family!”-Rachel Hor

The camp ended off with every-one’s effort in piecing a huge puzzle together as one! Appreciations were exchanged and good memories retained, as people parted ways in anticipation for the next ‘adventure’ again as a family! Read on to find out more about the next ‘adventure’!

Not only are the days leading up to Singapore’s National Day set abuzz by patriotic vibes all around the country, this is also the best time to wonder what goes on behind the scene of such a spectacular show! NYP Primers, under TOUCH Motivators, had the privilege again this year to be part of our nation’s birthday party! Held at the Marina Bay Floating Platform, this year’s National Day Parade (NDP) theme was “Our People, Our Home”, in celebration of ordinary people who can do extraordinary when Singaporeans come together as one commu-nity, one people. Rehearsals for the motivators began in early May at ITE Simei. Time was spent breaking the ice through games, as they get familiar with their group members, before slowly being introduced to the dance choreography, balloon sculpting and crowd interaction skills as the weeks progressed! One thing fresh this year was the art and craft project, whereby the motivators had to design and create their own props and frames. These were eventually used as interaction aids during the pre-parade segment!

NATIONAL DAY PARADE’14

Trainings were soon held at the F1 Pit Building and Floating Platform, and week after week, the motivators worked extremely hard to perfect their dance moves and improve their crowd interaction proficiency. Bearing the sultry weather toughened them up as they persevered on with resilience. Decked out in bright colourful costumes, the motivators’ efforts paid off when they brought lots of smiles and happiness to the spectators present at the National Education (NE) Shows, the NDP Preview, and lastly, the NDP Celebration itself on 9 August!

Throughout this journey, the motivators gradually discovered more about themselves, having to step out of their comfort zones and ultimately growing in areas yet to be nurtured! As NDP 2014 comes to a closure, may we continue to reflect, participate and express what National Day, and more importantly, what being one Singapore means to us in our everyday lives!

“Being my first time participating in NDP, everything was simply amazing for me! The feeling was just so different when compared to watching the show on television! I am thankful for having such a lovely and entertaining bunch of friends in my group. We have moved on from being strangers to friends, and now more towards like a family!” -Lynn Fong (NDP Group 4)

“Finally, the big day that all of us have been waiting for is here! It was exciting and my group had lots of fun! This NDP journey started really early, but before we know it, it was al-ready the end. From strangers to friends, and friends to good friends, what I will miss most is the time we got to spend with one another, sharing endless stories with each other. I will never forget this memorable experience I’ve had and I am glad I made the right choice to join NDP, representing not only my CCA, but also my country, Singapore.” -Valerie Tan (NDP Group 1)

“The actual day of NDP was awesome! Celebrat-ing Singapore’s 49th birthday with the audience was a new experience for me. Serving the audience on the actual day was so much fun! Looking at the smiles and excitement of the audience, I felt like all our rehearsals and practices were worth it and I am proud to be a motivator!”-Geneve Goh (NDP Group 3)

“The most heartwarming moment on the actual day of NDP was the finale! Seeing the crowd cheering and waving their lightsticks, while Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s speech played on video, was really amazing. Also, at the end of the celebration, I realized how far my group and I have come and how much we have bonded over the trainings. NDP 2014 was a precious learning jour-ney and I am grateful for Singapore!”-Alvin Ang (NDP Group 4)

“After going through all the practices and rehearsals, the actual day of NDP was really fruitful! I really en-joyed myself, with fun friends and supportive audiences! I also got to relive the Singapore spirit which I haven’t had in a long time! It was a great experience being part of NDP 2014 and I will cherish Singapore, my home, much more now!” -Yu Jia (NDP Group 2)

In the midst of NDP training season, a photo hunt event was organised to build relationships between one another in the various NDP groups and have fun together! Given only picture clues, the groups set out to solve the puzzles and find the correct locations spread around Vivocity. Those that solved the puzzles fast enough were given additional clues to 4 puzzle locations under “BONUS TIME!”! And while it was physi-cally draining, the fun-filled night ended off remarkably well for everyone!

“Photo hunt was extraordinary! It was my first time participating in such an activity and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Every clue my group solved hyped us up and we became even more enthusiastic over time! The sense of satisfaction when my group cracked the most difficult clue was over-whelming! We created many great memories and I am thankful for my group!”-Vivian Cheng

“The most enjoyable part of the activity was the “BONUS TIME!”. I found it very challenging and exciting! Even though I was not familiar with the pictures given, my group and I worked together to look for the right locations! I had a very fun time with my teammates throughout the activity!” -Carl Neo

“Photo hunt was really tiring but fun at the same time! It was amazing watching how motivated my group was, as we encouraged one another even though we were all already very tired from running around! I really enjoyed the company of my group members and I’m thankful for the care they showed towards me!”-Chu Jiunn

“I had an absolutely great time at photo hunt! Thanks to this event, I bonded closer with my NDP group members, and learnt to work more competently with them. We cared for one another by making sure everyone was in good health, shared our opinions, and waited for one another as we completed the various tasks together as a group! It was an awesome night!”-Jia Hui

At the Love Factually session held on 4th July 2014, Primers from the 3 Polytechnics and friends from Boys’ Brigade HQ gathered together to hear an insightful talk given by a counselor, Sarah, from Focus on the Family. We were introduced to the 3 key points (ABCs) to developing a healthy and long-lasting relationship, which are ‘Admitting it’, ‘setting Boundaries’, and ‘making Choices’!

“This talk taught us that it is better to remain in an unromantic friendship with the party you are interested in, so that you will be able to discover more about that person’s character, values and interests, before actually deciding whether to move into a steady relationship. Ultimately, it is not always easy in a relationship; it involves continual compromise and forgiveness for that special one!” -Kleeve Hoi
