2016 ISHAE AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE APPLICATION

For Member Programs - A program or project that shows performance results through increases in members or retention of members.

Ohio Hotel & Lodging Association (OHLA) -- rebranding and development of all-new membership marketing and promotional materials and collateral resources.

1. Goals & Objectives of Program

A review of branding, promotional and marketing materials identified a need for a more consistent and impactful approach to conveying the value of membership and participation in the association. The organization’s brand had not been updated in any way in more than 15 years. Materials used to solicit prospective members, sponsors and other stakeholders were dissimilar and created dissonance in our messaging. Key parts of our value proposition were missing from materials. Overall, the look and feel was seen as dated and unappealing by the external audience.

An investment in branding, design, and development of all-new marketing materials was undertaken in order to build a solid foundation for sales to hotel members, allied members, and additional investors; to raise the visibility and stature of the organization within the industry, and within the association and business communities; to increase the quality of our public face beyond our own industry, including media, government, etc.; to produce more participation, sales and revenue in all program categories; and to increase membership sales and retention.

In addition to creating a better and more dynamic aesthetic reflecting the energy, strength, quality and professionalism of everything we do, the products created will also make it easier for members and stakeholders to quickly identify the programs most important to them, and to learn more. For our membership and prospective member kits, we also used a modular approach to allow us to add or change out programs without having to replace the entire product. This will allow us to continue to transform the organization and add to our value proposition and be nimble in updating this information.

2. Target Audience

The audience for the transformation of our branding, membership and marketing materials includes all members and prospective members; Allied (associate) members; stakeholders, partners and sponsors; PAC participants and targets; and the greater association and business community.

3. Results of Program

The program is ongoing and in progress, but the major aspects of reinventing our branding and prospective member/member kits and related marketing materials has been implemented. The initial impact on our target audiences produced 100 percent positive feedback and some literally jaw-dropping

moments upon unveiling at our launch session meetings. Our membership year runs from July 1 to June 30, so the final impact on year one membership will be measured later. However, initial metrics reflect positive results.

Several months into our launch, we have seen an increase in retention percentage over previous year, and additional membership sales. Halfway through the year, we were experiencing retention of 6.5 percent higher than previous year. We have realized thousands of dollars in revenue from sponsors and Allied members as a result of the new campaign. Our new member sales from July-Oct. in the current membership year have increased from the same period in 2015. We have secured an unprecedented commitment from a number of management companies for 100 percent membership of all of their properties. We have also been successful in signing up brands as members/sponsors, including a national hotel brand that does not yet have a single hotel in Ohio but sees the value in partnering with us. We also increased our financial support received from the state tourism division 500 percent.

4. Evaluation Measures

Success is ultimately measured in membership retention, new member sales, Allied (associate) membership, and sponsorship funding received. Additional evaluation includes surveys and interviews with member, non-member, sponsor and stakeholder audiences.

5. How was the program presented to the Target audience?

Materials have been placed into a communications stream that includes additional touches to all categories of contacts, including direct mail, email, website, social media and events. Membership marketing and collateral materials are delivered by mail to relevant audiences (prospects, new members, members, etc.) Materials were previewed in presentation at all OHLA events to build awareness, then distributed at events as those materials became available. The association website was rebuilt to reflect the new design and direction, and is currently being realigned to present information in the same way as the new marketing materials.

6. Additional information

This project will be part of our transformational approach to sales and marketing, but at its core, it is about more than just that. It is helping us convey a critical message about a generational change within the industry in our state that will require new energy, strength and power from the hotel & lodging association. We are positioning the organization and the industry for relevance and success for the next generation.

What is Group Retrospective Rating?Group Retrospective Rating is a program where BWC-certified group sponsors pool employers oflike industry that meet their criteria for safety and claims management practices. As total futureclaim costs of the group stay under the group’s premiums paid, the group members receive a premium refund of their individual premiums paid. CareWorksComp has created two tiers with different projected savings levels for each industry group. The two levels are:

Platinum; and,Gold.

Considerations before JoiningEmployers who wish to take part in group retrospective rating must fully understand the risk involved. If the group’s claim costs exceed the group’s premiums paid, the entire group of employers will pay a premium assessment. This assessment is capped at a percentage of the employer’s individual annual premium. CareWorksComp thoroughly reviews each group member’ssafety program and claim history prior to acceptance into all CareWorksComp group retrospectiverating programs we administer. CareWorksComp works aggressively and proactively to help ourgroup retrospective rating clients prevent injuries and control costs to maximize the benefits of theprogram for all participants.

Paying your PremiumsGroup retrospective rating employers continue to pay their semi-annual premiums (at their individualrates) to BWC, as if they were not in a group.

If new claim costs remain under the premiums paid for the group as a whole, rebates will be issued by BWC at 12, 24 and 36 month intervals after the policy year ends.

Employers that maintain participation in the group retrospective program for multiple yearscan continue to get multi-year rebates.

Deadlines to EnrollInterested employers must apply through a BWC-certified sponsor. Certified sponsors provide theapplication and determine whether to include employers in their group retrospective program. Deadlines for applying are:

Private, state fund employers – Last business day of January.Public employer taxing districts – Last business day of July.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

PRODUCE FAVORABLE PUBLIC POLICY & GROW OUR TRAVEL ECONOMY

The Ohio Hotel & Lodging Association represents and fights for your industry at the local, state and national level. OHLA’s advocacy programs ensure that you and your business have a strong voice on issues that impact your bottom line every day.

LOBBYINGOHLA has the travel and hospitality industry’s largest team of dedicated, experienced professionals lobbying the government on legislation and regulations. We work year-round to protect hotel and lodging businesses from unfair and costly mandates, burdensome requirements, and unfair competition. Our organization is recognized as a leader in the halls of Ohio’s Statehouse, and our proactive engagement at the local level ensures that hotels and innkeepers across the state can call in the power and experience they need when it matters most.

PRIORITY LEGISLATIVE AND REGULATORY ISSUESOHLA protects the lodging industry from regulatory overreach and works to make government requirements achievable in important areas such as fire inspection, pool regulation, labor laws and more.

• Fighting harmful lodging tax increases• Supporting effective destination marketing efforts• Ensuring out-of-state online travel companies play by the

same rules as Ohio hotels• Fair oversight and taxation of short-term online rental

platforms • Securing improvements to Ohio’s travel infrastructure• Increasing per diem rates

LEGAL ACTION FUNDOHLA is the go-to resource when the fight to protect the hotel and lodging industry requires taking action in court. OHLA works with industry partners to ensure that when unfair and illegal actions put hoteliers and innkeepers at a competitive disadvantage, inhibit competition, or threaten operations across our industry, we bring in top legal resources to produce wins for our members.

GOVERNMENT, LEGISLATIVE AND REGULATORY UPDATES AND RESOURCESHoteliers and innkeepers can rely on OHLA as a single-point source of information about laws and regulations that impact your daily operations and your bottom line. Our monthly emailed updates keep you apprised of our work on the local, state and national level. Changes to the law and required actions are communicated to you in clear language. OHLA also provides in-depth resource documents on issues ranging from taxation to health and safety. Help is always just a phone call or email away.

OHIO HOTEL PACOHLA builds strength and stature for the hotel and lodging industry through its political action committee, Ohio Hotel PAC. Through the support of members

and partners throughout the state, we maintain the resources necessary to support those elected officials who support our travel economy and the issues which impact us the most.

Ohio Hotel PAC ensures that individuals in our industry have a stronger collective voice under one banner.

LEGISLATIVE DAYSOHLA members from across the state have the ability to meet key policymakers, learn about the political process, and impact public policy by participating in legislative days at both the state and national level.

Under the collaborative banner of Ohio Tourism Works, OHLA and its partners host the largest biennial gathering of individuals working to support the travel economy. Held in Columbus, this event includes important speakers, background on critical issues, and the chance to meet and discuss your industry with members of Ohio’s General Assembly and administration.

Each year, OHLA works to bring a large contingent from Ohio to the national AH&LA/AAHOA Legislative Action Summit in Washington, DC. Here, OHLA members can meet and interact with colleagues from across the country while discussing industry issues with members of Congress. OHLA provides scholarship stipends on a competitive basis to encourage member participation.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIESGood public policy outcomes require active involvement of OHLA members interested in helping formulate our priorities and positions. The OHLA Government Affairs Committee provides you the chance to represent your business and drive important discussions that impact your future profitability. You can join OHLA’s policy steering committee and help us set a course for success.

EVENTS & AWARDS

CREATING CONNECTIONS & RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE

Local Lodging Council Meetings are one of the many informational resources that OHLA offers on a local level. OHLA currently hosts these regional meetings multiple times a year, across the state, in Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, and the Northwest regions to discuss industry issues. Local Lodging Council Meetings are an opportunity to network with peers and Allied partners as well as to gain valuable operations, legislative and economical information that helps you be more successful.

In order to serve more members, OHLA offers different types of lodging council meetings. A general lodging council meeting typically lasts an hour and it meant to be a quick and efficient means of connecting and sharing information. OHLA also offers local lodging council breakfasts, luncheons and GM receptions. These events are intended to bring the same resources to our councils, but incorporate a bit more time for networking and socializing with our industry peers.

EVENTS & AWARDS

CREATING CONNECTIONS & RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE

The Ohio Hotel & Lodging Association Annual Conference & Gala is the largest gathering of hotel and lodging professionals in the state of Ohio. With over twelve states represented at the OHLA Annual Conference, OHLA Hotel Members and Allied Members have an opportunity to learn and grow their professional networks and their knowledge of the hospitality industry. The OHLA Annual Conference & Gala provides opportunities to meet with vendors who support the lodging industry, participate in educational sessions, and engage your peers at several networking mixers.

OHLA’s Allied Members, who provide benefits to support member hotel operations, exhibit throughout the day. This is a great opportunity for both hoteliers and Allied Members to build relationships, support the lodging industry, and create a network that supports economic growth in Ohio.

During Conference, OHLA offers a Silent Auction, where attendees can bid on a variety of items and packages. Proceeds of the OHLA Silent Auction benefit the OHLA Education & Training Fund, which provides scholarship opportunities for hospitality professionals seeking educational and training opportunities.

The highlight of the OHLA Annual Conference is the prestigious Ohio Stars of the Industry Gala, where OHLA recognizes the outstanding achievements of both front-of-house and back-of-house hospitality professionals. The Gala recognizes the winners of the local Stars of the Industry Awards Luncheons, as well as the nominations from outlying areas that did not participate in the local luncheons. Categories for nominees include Front Desk Associate of the Year, Housekeeper of the Year, Server of the Year, Service Superstar of the Year, Supervisor/Manager of the Year, and General Manager of the Year.

Unique Lodging of Ohio (ULO) Property of the YearThe Unique Lodging of Ohio is a lodging council within OHLA that is made up of Bed & Breakfasts, Inns, Cabins, and other independent properties. Unique Lodging of Ohio Properties are awarded each year. These awards are based on customer testimonials of excellence in customer service, unique location or experience, and features that make an independent property special.

The Property of the Year receives a prestigious OHLA placard, and the second and third place runners-up receive a certification of excellence issued by OHLA.

Ohio’s hotel and lodging industry has a strong voice through OHLA. We must also be a strong player in the political arena to build the influence necessary to win important battles. Some of our most important activities can only be funded through our political action committee — Ohio Hotel PAC.

HOW DOES OHIO HOTEL PAC HELP YOU?Every day, OHLA is fighting harder for the hotel and lodging industry and for our partners in the travel economy. A strong PAC helps us deliver results on issues such as:• Fighting illegal and ill-conceived lodging taxes• Keeping competition fair and on a level playing field• Ending deceptive trade practices that hurt hoteliers• Requiring oversight of platforms like Airbnb• Beating back burdensome and costly regulations • Securing adequate support for travel & tourism marketing• Improving infrastructure and public services• Building a more business-friendly, pro-jobs environment

State and federal laws restrict certain activities, such as political contributions, from using corporate funds. Money from dues, sponsorships and benefit programs cannot be used for this purpose. To undertake successful political efforts, it is critical for OHLA to secure financial support for our PAC from individuals — our members, partners and participants in the travel economy.

Ohio Hotel PAC is the only political action committee dedicated to fighting for all of Ohio’s hotel & lodging industry and our travel economy. We fight and win for you!

WE NEED YOU!Please join the fight on behalf of our industry, and help us win. Show your support for OHLA and your desire for hotel and lodging professionals to be the winning team. WHAT IS A PAC?A political action committee, or PAC, is a legally-recognized organization that represents a group of like-minded individuals and organizations who want to have an effective voice in the democratic process.

WHY DO WE NEED OHIO HOTEL PAC?Having a PAC allows us to do things that support our industry’s goals and agenda that we cannot do through other means, such as supporting elected officials, candidates who champion our cause and campaigns that achieve our desired outcomes.

HOW STRONG IS OUR INDUSTRY PAC?We are working hard to make OHLA more effective and influential than ever before. We need Ohio Hotel PAC to keep pace with that transformational growth. Currently, our PAC does not reflect the incredible size and economic impact of hotel & lodging. Fewer than 11% of OHLA member entities are represented by individuals participating in Ohio Hotel PAC. Fewer than 0.0015% of the number of individuals working in our industry participate.

WHAT IS CHANGING REGARDING OUR POLITICAL ACTIVITY?We face new challenges, new competitors, and new opponents. These forces come with limitless resources and large PACs of their own. Armed with that ammunition, they can line up more political support, secure more allies, and fund more campaigns against our interests.

DOES OHIO HOTEL PAC PAY FOR OUR LOBBYING AND GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS?No. OHLA must direct resources from the association budget for our top-notch lobbying and government affairs activities. PAC funding is only used for very specific activities that cannot be funded by OHLA or corporate funds.

DOES PAC ACTIVITY FAVOR A POLITICAL PARTY I DON’T SUPPORT?No. Ohio Hotel PAC takes a very balanced, bipartisan approach to building support for our industry. We support elected officials, candidates and campaigns based on the interests of the hotel and lodging community, and nothing else. We will always openly discuss requests for support and ideas with PAC participants.

Ohio Hotel PAC gives everyone in our industry and the travel economy a louder, stronger voice by banding together individuals, combining their investments, and directing those resources in a smart, effective way.
