1 OHSU Diversity Digest | November 2014 Building the Pipeline of Diverse Healthcare Professionals OHSU will be working with Portland State University in designing and implementing a plan to help underrepresented and diverse students pursue careers in biomedical, behavioral, social, or clinical research and other health sciences. PSU’s $24 million research and training grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will support students of Hispanic, African American, American Indian, Alaska Native, and Pacific Islander heritage as well as students with disabilities, histories of foster care or economic disadvantage. Cynthia Morris, Ph.D., M.P.H., Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology, is the principal investigator on behalf of OHSU. She will be working with the Center for Diversity and Inclusion on student recruitment and retention strategies. “Diversifying our health and science workforce is critical in ensuring all communities receive culturally competent care and service,” said Leslie Garcia, M.P.A., OHSU’s assistant chief diversity officer and director for the Center for Diversity & Inclusion. “To that end, OHSU and PSU have worked together for many years on multiple diversity-focused fronts to increase opportunities for diverse and underrepresented students. OHSU Develops International Hub in Southeast Asia Bangkok Dusit Medical Services is teaming with OHSU to improve health in Thailand and the United States through shared knowledge and skills, and the creation of centers of excellence focused on key challenges. The effort will engage faculty, health professionals and students from OHSU's schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry and public health. "For OHSU, collaboration and innovation are in our DNA. When we are willing to work with others to solve problems in the name of the public good, the opportunities are limitless. We are taking collaboration to the next level. This initiative will serve both Oregon and Thailand as a platform for education and research and cross-cultural scientific exchange," said Joe E. The Indian Health Service provides a comprehensive health service delivery system for American Indians and Alaska Natives who are members of 566 federally recognized tribes located throughout the United States often referred to as “Indian Country.” The lecture will be held from 12-1pm on Wednesday, November 12 at Richard Jones Hall, Room 4340. It is designed to support both formal and informal leadership roles. There is no cost to participate in this leadership development program.
