ANIMAL WELFARE & BROILER CHICKEN PRODUCTION SYSTEMS (CHAPTER 7.10)

• Definitions (Art. 7.10.1)• Chicken Broiler

o means a bird of the species Gallus gallus kept for commercial meat production.

o Poultry kept in village or backyard flocks are not included.

• Harvestingo means the catching and loading of birds on farm for

transportation to the slaughterhouse/abattoir

SCOPE (ART. 7.10.2)

• from arrival of day old birds on the farm to harvesting the broilers in commercial production systems

• cover broilers kept in cages, on slatted floors, litter or dirt and indoors or outdoors

INCIDENCE OF DISEASE - ASCITES

• The term "ascites" refers to the fluid accumulation in abdominal cavity or in chest area.

• The disease is more scientifically known as pulmonary hypertension syndrome.

• Diagnosed at 4 - 5 weeks of age. Total mortality due to ascites is higher in the male parent lines, which have the capability of faster growth

LIGHT REGIME

Page 17: OIE Animal welfare standards broiler chicken production systems

1717

LIGHT MANGEMENT

• Continuous light produce low level of activity in broiler flocks throughout the day; the flock does not develop a circadian activity pattern

• Alternating Light-Dark-Rhythms lead to increased activity in the light phases but do not increase the total activity

Page 18: OIE Animal welfare standards broiler chicken production systems

1818

LIGHT MANAGMENT

Gain of increased light regime - 25 grams / per bird or 1% % of weight

Culls in different light regime - 1,6 % increase in culled birds
