OFFLU network - overview

OIE- FAO network of expertise on Animal InFLUenza

Open network of expertise comprising avian, swine, equine and

wild birds influenza experts from range of disciplines including

diagnostics, classic and molecular epidemiology, virology, animal

production, veterinary medicine and vaccinology

Objectives:

• To exchange scientific data and biological materials within

the network, to analyse such data, and share widely

• Offer technical advice, training and veterinary expertise to

Member Countries in the control of animal influenza

• Collaborate with the WHO influenza network on pandemic

influenza preparedness

• Highlight influenza surveillance and research needs,

promote their development and co-ordination

Key activities this year Professor Ian Brown (UK) became the new OFFLU Steering Committee

Chairman, Dr Mia Torchetti as new member

OFFLU Swine influenza technical experts met at the OIE Headquarters

in February 2019 to share surveillance data and research updates.

Collection of zoonotic influenza data from Reference Centres and

national laboratories on biannual basis and exchange the virological and

epidemiological information with WHO for update of human influenza

vaccine composition.

Equine influenza experts met at OIE Headquarters and shared

surveillance data and provided vaccine recommendations for equine

influenza

OFFLU Annual proficiency testing to improve capacity building for

detection of AI viruses comprising panels of viruses from different

regions

OFFLU avian influenza and wild bird experts exchanged recent AI data

through teleconferences

Conclusion AI continue to be a global threat for both public and animal health. There is an increase

in the number of affected countries and also circulating subtypes. Need for international

coordination and cooperation.

General improvement in the surveillance capacities of countries and territories, but

there are still gaps. High level of surveillance for the disease should be maintained,

given its potential zoonotic impact.

OIE’s standards and the transparency of reporting through WAHIS provide the

framework for VS to implement effective surveillance, reporting, and control measures

for AI. OIE continues to closely monitor the global AI situation and report back to its

Members.

Network of OIE AI Reference Centres provides policy advice, strategy design and

technical assistance for the control and eradication of these viruses.

OIE laboratory twinning projects improve capacity building and expertise in many

countries to implement effective surveillance and control for avian influenza

Tripartite collaborations (OIE-FAO-WHO) and OFFLU addresses avian influenza at the

human animal interfaces
