Executive Summary
BiOWiSHTechnologiescarriedouta6weekvalidationat3petrolstationsinMalaysiatoassesstheimpactofdosingBiOWiSH™ Aqua FOGintooilwaterseparators.
Thekeyobjectivesweretovisuallyobservereductionsinhydrocarbonsandconfirmanyimprovementinthequalityofwastewater.AsecondaryobjectivewastoassessifBiOWiSH™couldremoveblockagewithinthewastewaterdrainagesysteminoneofthestations.
After6weeks,thevalidationshowedsignificantimprovementsinwaterquality.Thevalidationhasshownthatjustbysimplebatchdosingandsprayofseparatorsurface,thehydrocarbonsaredigestedfromsurfacesandthevisualqualityofwaterisimmediatelyimproved.
IndependenttestingbytheUniversitiTeknologiMARA(UiTM)inthefirstweekofthevalidationprogramshowedthefollowingresults:
• ReductioninBiologicalOxygenDemand(BOD)byupto97%
• ReductioninChemicalOxygenDemand(COD)byupto95%
• ReductioninFat,OilandGrease(FOG)byupto99%
Inthesubsequentweeks,BiOWiSH™wasabletomaintainpollutantlevelsatinitialreductions,whicharewellbelowexpectedlevels.
Additionally,thesecondaryobjectiveofunblockingdrainsinonestationwasmet.After2weeksofdosing,theblockeddrainswereunclogged,resultinginclearflowthroughofwastewater.
Thevalidationprogrampresentsanumberofkeybenefitsforthestationowner/operators:
• Reducedpumpoutcostsduetodecreasedpumpoutfrequency,resultinginsubstantialsavingsfortheoperator.
• Drasticallyimprovedqualityofwastewater,potentiallyresultinginlowerdisposalcostsduetolessconcentratedwastedisposal.
• Reducedmaintenancecostsduetouncloggingofdrains,potentiallyreducingexternalcontractorcoststoclearblockeddrainsinthestations.

Introduction
A6weekvalidationprogramwascarriedouttoassesstheimpactofdosingBiOWiSH™ Aqua FOGtoreducehydrocarbonsinoilwaterseparatorsat3petrolstations.
Petrolstationowneroperatorshaveidentifiedthatsignificantcostisrequiredtomanageandmaintaintheiroilwaterseparators.ThevalidationaimedtoshowthatwithdosingofBiOWiSH™ Aqua FOG,avisualreductioninhydrocarbonsandpositiveimpactonwaterqualitycouldbeseenwithintheseparators.
Theseseparatorstypicallyreceivesmallamountsofdieselandoilfromlocalisedspillsandwashdown.Tomaintaineffluentwaterqualityandreduceodor,theseoilwaterseparatorsmustbecleanedandemptiedonamonthlybasis.Thehighpollutantloadingsexperiencedcanleadtohighhandlinganddisposalcostspassedonbyexternalcontractors.
Theprimaryobjectiveofthevalidationwastoassessimpactonreductioninhydrocarbonbuildupandassessifmaintenancecostscouldbereduced.Anadditionalobjectiveforoneofthepetrolstationswastounblockitsfuelspilldrainagesystemthathadbeenblockedwithoilsoveryearsofuse.
Toconfirmtheimpactonwaterquality,regularsamplesweretakenandindependenttestingwascarriedoutbyUiTM.
Station locations
ThreepetrolstationswereselectedthatwereconsideredtypicalpetrolstationsinMalaysia.
Eachstationtypicallyhasadiscretefuelspillcollectionsystemthatcollectsanddrainslocaliseddieselspillsintoanoilwaterseparator.Allsmallscalefuelspillsarewasheddownintothefuelspillcollectionsystemascarriedoutbyattendants.
Eachstationhasadiscretestormwatersystemthatisdesignedtocollectstormwaterandstationwashdownandisseparatetothefuelspillcollectionsystem.
Allthreesitesundergoathoroughweeklysitecleanwherethemajorityofcleaningwaterissenttothestormwatersystem.Anywaterthatiscontaminatedwithfuelisdirectedtothefuelspillcollectionsystemwhereitiscollectedintheseparator.Allthreesiteswerenotedtobewellcleanedandownersandoperatorswerediligentintheircleaningandmaintenanceduties.
Maintenanceregimeoftheoilwaterseparatorisasfollows:
• Pitsareopenedforinspectionandanyplasticsorgarbageremoved.
• Theaccumulatedpitoilisthenemptiedandtransportedoffsiteonamonthlybasisbycontractedservices.

Thetheoryofmicrobialconsortiaisonewellresearchedandshowsstrongapplicationintheremediationofhydrocarbonsinsoilsaswellaswastewater1.BiOWiSH™ Aqua FOGhasdemonstratedoxidationofpollutantsinanumberofwastewaterapplicationsandhydrocarbonremediationfallswellwithinitsabilities.
Additionallytoitsabilitiestobreakdownnon-livingorganicsmuchfasterthanexistingtechnologies,BiOWiSH™ Aqua FOGis100%naturalandissafetohandle,activateanddose.
Results and discussion
Itiscriticaltoreinforcethattheoilwaterseparatorsatsite1andsite2werecleanedpriortothevalidationbeginning.Thiscleaningoperationwascarriedaspartoftheregularongoingmaintenanceprogramandnotattherequirementsofthevalidation.

Inallthreesites,BiOWiSH™ Aqua FOGhassignificantlyreducedtheaccumulatedhydrocarbonswithintheoilwaterseparator.Beforeandafterphotostakenofthetrapswereasfollows.

Site2wascleanedoutpriortovalidationcommencement,however,itcanbeseenthatthereisanotablereductioninHydrocarbonsinthebeforeandafterphotos.Thewallswerenotablyfreerfromgreaseandoilandhydrocarbonshadbeenremovedfromwalls.
Additionally,itcanbeseenfromthephotosthatthereisasignificantdifferenceinwaterqualityandagainthecleanlinessofthesystemisvastlyimprovedfromthevalidation.

Again,thevalidationshowssignificantimprovementinthecleanlinessoftheoilwaterseparator.TheresultsshowthathydrocarbonshavebeenreducedbytheadditionofBiOWiSH™ Aqua FOG.
Theoperatorsatsite2notedthatimmediatelyafterdosingBiOWiSH™thewaterinthereceivingpitwouldbegintobubble.Allthreestationoperatorsconfirmedthattherewasanotablevisualdifferenceinwaterqualityandthatthepitwallsandsurfaceswerecleaner.

TheCODinallseparatorsdropimmediatelyinthefirstweekfollowedbyacomparablesteadystate.SlightincreaseinCODcanbeexplainedbytheeffectofthehydrocarbonsbeingstrippedoffthewalls,therebyincreasingCOD.Additionally,theCODforsite3hasincreasedduetotheadditionalsolidsthathavepassedthroughfromtheunblockingofthepipesystem.

FatOilandGreaselevelshavebeendrasticallyreducedfromoriginalloads,whichisasexpectedbythedosingofBiOWiSH™.Levelscontinuetobenegligiblecomparedtoinitialvaluesobservedinun-cleanedseparators.
Again,itisimportanttonotethatthewatersamplesweretakenfromwithinthepits,notfromanydischargepoint.Thiswouldsignifyworstcaseresultsasanyresultingdischargeshouldhavebettertreatmentfromthewell-designedseparator.
Conclusion
TheBiOWiSHTechnologiesoilwaterseparatorvalidationprogramhasshownsignificantreductioninhydrocarbonsandimprovementsinwaterquality.Thevalidationhasshownthatjustbysimplebatchdosingandsprayofthewalls,thehydrocarbonsaredigestedfromthewallsoftheseparatorandthewaterqualityhasimproved.

• Drasticallyimprovedqualityofwastewater,potentiallyresultinginlowerdisposalcostsduetolessconcentratedwastedisposal.
• Reducedmaintenancecostsduetouncloggingofdrains,potentiallyreducingexternalcontractorcoststoclearblockeddrainsinthestations.
• Improvedcleanlinessofthestationforcustomersduetouncloggingofdrains.(Thisresultledtosite3commissioningfurtherworktoremovestubbornfuelstainsontheirdieseltruckfillingarea).
Furtherworkshouldbecarriedouttounderstandhowfarscheduledpumpoutscouldbespacedtoprovidetrueeconomicbenefitforstationowner/operators.Thisshouldbecarriedoutoveranumberofstationsoveralongerperiod.
