ON THE COVER: The Chesapeake Boathouse casts a dramatic nighttime glow across the newly revitalized Oklahoma River and serves as the visual anchor to OKC’s Boathouse District.
As publishers of the Oklahoma City Conventioner, allow us to ex-tend our welcome to OKC! We hope we can provide a glimpse of the diversity Oklahoma has to offer. We have everything you would expect in a major city...world class hotels, professional sports, full gaming casinos and race track, a zoo, historic museums, live music and theater.
What you might not expect will be the taste of a uniquely rich cul-tural heritage formed from the red earth so abundant in Oklahoma. Historic Bricktown and the Western Heritage Museums will take you back to the Land Run Era of the Wild West via walking trails, water taxi, or on a river cruise up the rechanneled Oklahoma River. The Classen Curve area offers upscale dining and shopping against a uniquely modern backdrop.
As OKC residents and business owners for over 36 years, we are eager to show you “our town.” We know you will enjoy the casual atmosphere and friendly people of OKC and find the dining, enter-tainment and shopping second to none.
If you have any questions or need extra copies of the Oklahoma City Conventioner, don’t hesitate to call our office at 405.249.7097.
We hope you enjoy your visit and invite you to re-turn soon!
Sincerely,
The Matlock Family
welcome

Automobile Alley is an upscale urban shopping and enter-
tainment district just north of downtown on Broadway Ave.
Formerly home to the bulk of OKC’s auto dealerships, the
district is in the midst of a renaissance with hip new es-
tablishments popping up everywhere. Walk down Broadway
and it’s hard to miss the explosion of color adorning the
facade of the Womb Gallery (@WombGallery), the psyche-
delic art gallery curated by Wayne Coyne and The Flaming
Lips. Nestled within the Womb you’ll find Dwelling Spaces
(dwellingspaces.net), the edgiest gif t shop in town. Good
times radiate from this epicenter on NW 9th with S&B’s
Burger Joint (sandbburgersokc.com), Iguana Mexican Grill
(iguanamexicangrill.com) and Shop Good (shopgoodokc.com)
all within a stone’s throw from each other. Keep explor-
ing Broadway to find Plenty Mercantile (read more on pg
35), Hideaway Pizza (hideawaypizza.com), upscale RED
Primesteak (redprimesteak.com) & Coffee Slingers (coffees-
lingers.com), all highly recommended. Reaching Automobile
Alley from downtown couldn’t be easier with a Spokies bike
share kiosk (see pg 33) at Broadway & NW 9th St.

Oklahoma City National Memorial & MuseumThe Memorial features a museum and monument erected in remembrance of the April 19, 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Open 24/7, the Outdoor Symbolic Me-morial is a powerful place as night falls and the Field of Empty Chairs begin to glow. Take some time to walk the grounds and contemplate how hope rose from such a horrific event.
A free guided video tour is available by search-ing iTunes or YouTube for “Outdoor Symbolic Memorial Walking Tour” on your smartphone (length = 17:56).

Oklahoma City Museum of Art The OKCMOA’s extensive collection is highlighted by works from O’Keeffe, Calder and Renoir to name a few. The mu-seum has also received wide acclaim for its comprehensive collection of glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly spanning three decades of his finest work. Chihuly’s 55-foot tall Eleanor Blake Kirkpatrick Memorial Tower in the museum’s atrium can even be appreciated from the exterior if you find your-
self in the neighborhood after hours. The newly updated interior of the Museum Café is an excellent lunch or dinner option as well.
OKCMOA screens indie, foreign and classic films every Thursday – Sunday evening.

National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Known for their extensive collection of classic and contem-porary western art, the museum features well known works by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell, among countless others. Perhaps its most iconic piece is sculptor James Earle Fraser’s 18-foot plaster tribute to the Native American people, The End of the Trail. It’s easy to spend hours combing through this tribute to the American West, but it’s worth seeing the grounds and statues if you only have a short time to explore.
The gift shop has some great lost-wax cast bronze replicas of Frederic Remington’s western sculptures.

DININGDINING
Upstairs, the Purple Bar offers a change in atmosphere under
the cool glow of locally produced mouth-blown glass. Expertly
crafted cocktails, beers and an extensive wine list compliment
a special bar menu. Half-priced appetizers during the Purple
Bar’s daily happy hour and live music on Friday and Saturday
evenings make it the perfect spot to close out your day.
You’re sure to find something you love at Nonna’s, whether it’s
Lunch or Dinner, a sweet treat from Nonna’s Bakery, Private
Dining Rooms for 1 to 100 guests, Purple Bar drinks and music,
or 2nd Floor Patio Dining offering the best view Bricktown! An
added bonus...be sure to visit Painted Door, the perfect store
for the perfect gift!
Nonna’s Euro-American Ristorante and Bar occupies 22,000
square feet of upscale space in a repurposed turn of the cen-
tury warehouse. It’s location in the heart of Bricktown is within
walking distance of the Cox Convention Center and surround-
ing hotels and provides an excellent starting point for a night on
the town or before a Thunder game.
One of the many things we love about Nonna’s is their un-
compromising commitment to quality. Owner Avis Scaramucci
is tireless in her efforts to obtain first rate ingredients for the
menu. Case in point: Cedar Spring Farms, a state-of-the-art
hydroponic growing facility dedicated to keeping the freshest
tomatoes, peppers, herbs and microgreens on Nonna’s plates.
The menu showcases these ingredients with honest takes on
American and European classics. The seafood selections and
certified Angus steaks cooked over applewood flame pair well
with Nonna’s award-winning wine list. The breadth of the menu
is impressive, including many gluten free and vegetarian options.

STAY ACTIVESTAY ACTIVE
Rocktown’s 60-Degree Bouldering Wall is great for solo climbs.
It’s a struggle to maintain an active
lifestyle while on the road. Your hotel
pool or treadmill is a good start, but
here are a few options near downtown
OKC where you can get your blood
pumping while enjoying a change in
scenery.
CLIMBING
Located just south of Bricktown, Rocktown Climbing Gym
(rocktowngym.com) is the city’s premier climbing destina-
tion. Formerly a grain elevator, Rocktown offers indoor
and outdoor climbs up to 90 feet, including top rope, lead
climbs and bouldering. It’s recommended that you bring a
partner to climb/belay with, but singles options are also
available. Rocktown is open every weekday until 10pm,
8pm on Saturdays and 6pm on Sundays. Visit their website
or call 405.319.1400 for more information.
RIVER SPORTS
Take advantage of the new high-end facilities in OKC’s
Boathouse district on the newly revitalized Oklahoma Riv-
er. In addition to the 13 miles of mixed use trails along the
river, Oklahoma City RIVERSPORT (riversportokc.org) of-
fers $10 day passes to the Chesapeake Boathouse’s fitness
center, locker rooms, yoga and indoor rowing classes. For
$25, you can gain access to kayaks, paddle boards and bi-
cycles in addition to the above amenities. Visit their website
or call 405.552.4040 for more information.
HIKING / RUNNING / BIKING
In addition to the 13 miles of multi-use trails along the
Oklahoma River, both Lake Hefner and Lake Overholser (see map on p. 36) boast several miles of scenic trail and are only
a short drive away. If you’d rather stick close to your hotel,
take a walk or a run through the newly renovated open spaces
and cascading waterfalls of the Myriad Botanical Gardens.
The newly established OKC bike share program Spokies
(spokiesokc.com) has six kisosks in the downtown area and is
a great way to move around town in a healthy way.

LOCAL ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
The Artist:Roshni Robert is originally from Washington state but now lives and works in Norman, OK. Her series of work featured next month at LOCAL reflects observational specimen illustrations of Oklahoma flora and fauna.
“I look out the window. I look for movement, a flicker of color, the movement of a branch. These are the inspirations for my work- the colors and the shapes.
This is my third spring in Norman, Oklahoma and each year I am overwhelmed by the speed with which things explode out of their dormancy here. I am caught up with it and feel my own rush to create work that represents my curiosity and eager-ness to meet every bird and every leaf arriving in my yard. I have been painting in a hurry too, two finished paintings a week on average.
My color palate has changed from dark blue, dark green and dark brown to soft blue and pink and pale yellow- sunrise col-ors. Making this work is my chance to present Oklahoma as a beautiful place, as my place. It is an offering.”
Current Exhibition:Roshni’s work is on exhibit May 10 through July 7 in The Gallery space at LOCAL (2262 W. Main St., Norman, eatatlocal.com) and can be viewed during their normal business hours, Tue-Thu 11am-10pm, Fri-Sat 11am-12am, Sun 10am-3pm.
