Old Mill District: Capturing the Season

Old Captur

The holiday season is a time for gathering together, enjoying those we love and just having a good time. Be sure not to miss the chance to gather up the kids and head to Wanoga SnoPark for an afternoon of sledding and hot chocolate. One afternoon build a snowman in the front yard, bake cookies and play board games by the fi re.

Ready for a day of play in the snow? Throw snowballs, try snowshoeing or cut down your own tree. In downtown Bend be sure to catch the tree lighting on Friday, November 26 and the Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 4.

Once you’ve found the perfect gift be sure to add the fi nishing touch with beautiful wrapping and ribbons at Serendipity with a portion of the proceeds going to Kid’s Center. This is a great way to support a local nonprofi t and check gift wrapping off your holiday to-do list. This leaves you more time to listen to carolers and enjoy a hot-toddy at Greg’s Grill while overlooking the winter wonderland of the Deschutes River.

Whatever your holiday plans, we hope you make the Old Mill District part of your family tradition. Visit the Old Mill District to see the trees full of Christmas lights. Enjoy complimentary carriage rides, plan a visit with Santa on a weekend from Thanksgiving through December and don’t forget to fi nish your Christmas shopping.

Don’t let the holidays slip by this year without enjoying some of the magic of the season. You can fi nd it all when visiting the Old Mill District.

Santa Making His Rounds at the Old Mill DistrictLocal celebrities are once again helping out Old Saint Nick this holiday season, by donning his jovial persona at the Old Mill District Santa Land. With a little help from his friends (local personalities and government offi cials) Santa is back to bring joy to kids of all ages.

In the magical place called Santa Land, right across from REI, kiddies can capture the big guy’s ear with their hearts’ desires, while parents take turns guessing which local is in disguise. Bend’s own Stott Shots Photography will make the moment into holiday history by snapping an image of your little ones with Santa Claus.

Look for Santa to make his pilgrimage down from the North Pole starting on Friday, November 26. He’ll be available every weekend until Christmas, as well as the week of the big day, to bend his ear for your little sugarplums. Santa Duck and Santa Beaver will be making an appearance during the season as well. Check our Holiday Happenings calendar in this guide and on-line at www.theoldmill.com for specifi c dates and times. Merry Christmas!

New Locally-Owned Shops Bring Elegance and LaughterThe Old Mill District happily welcomed three family-owned shops over the last year. Visit Wonderland Toy Shoppe for creative, educational and award winning toys, don’t miss Serendipity for beautiful letter press cards, papers, unique gifts and small treasures and carry all your new items home in an upcycled handmade bag from SaraBella* Upcycled.

Jessica Intlekofer and Megan Blodgett are sisters and native Central Oregonians that together created Serendipity fi lled with cards, ribbons, gifts and home décor items by well noted national and local designers and artists. “We are excited to carry some wonderful lines of products that are hard to fi nd in Central Oregon,” said Blodgett. While the idea has been a common goal for years Intlekoker described the timing as simply, “serendipitous.” “We wanted to create a warm, inviting, personal atmosphere and we hope our customers feel like they have walked into their best friend’s home.”

Hamlet and Tanisha Marderos have enjoyed living in Bend for nearly a decade. They opened Wonderland Toy Shoppe to create an inviting and imaginative environment where people feel welcomed, engaged and have an enjoyable shopping experience. The décor and design elements selected by Tanisha and Hamlet for the toy store make for a fun and playful shopping experience that you don’t want to miss. Wonderland carries toys from around the world, arts and crafts, games and much more for a range of ages that are ready to play. “Wonderland fi lls a need in the community we’ve seen for our own kids. We are offering toys you can’t fi nd anywhere else, at prices that are still low enough to afford. We look forward to becoming a footprint within the community where people come to fi nd special gifts and toys with that ‘wow’ factor”. Wonderland Toy Shoppe is located next to J. Jill.

Sara Weiner has lived in Bend for fourteen years and originally owned and designed Sara Bella Custom Outdoor Wear a children’s clothing line. Sara Bella* Upcycled is devoted to the craft of upcycling plastic bags and banners into fun, fashionable and functional items. From tote bags to aprons, wallets to belts, she and her seamstresses only use trash – plastic bags and used banners that would otherwise be tossed into the landfi ll, to create one of- a-kind treasures that can be put to use every day. Every item makes an excellent gift – something to share with people you care for while making an impact on the environment we all care about. “At SaraBella* Upcycled our goal is to keep as much trash out of the landfi ll as possible. We are focused on the well being of our environment as well as our community. When you step into our shop you not only have an inspiring array of products to choose from, but a close up look of how we manufacturer them,” said Sara Weiner. SaraBella* Upcycled is located on the second fl oor above O Mo Mo.

New Dining Options in the Old Mill DistrictPalate Pleasers! The Old Mill District has added three distinct restaurants in 2010.

Kona Mix Plate and Jimmy John’s both offer casual dining at great prices for lunch and dinner. Kona Mix Plate has several grilled meats (beef, pork and chicken) all with the distinct fl avors of Hawaii. Standout dishes include Teriyaki Mahi Mahi, Kahula Pork and Bulgogi. We also recommend trying the sushi, noodle soups, ahi poke and spicy chicken wings. Excellent food and aloha reminiscent of your last trip to the Hawaiian islands.

Jimmy John’s gourmet sandwiches include fresh baked French bread, fresh veggies and fi ne meats. These unique sub sandwiches offer generous portions and include the Vito (an Italian Sub with Genoa salami, provolone and hot peppers) or try the Pepe with applewood smoked ham. You’ll also enjoy the Club LuLu with turkey breast and bacon. Grab a sandwich and get on with your busy day! Fresh. Fast. Tasty.

Level 2: Global Food and Lounge offers small plate appetizers, full entrees and a range of specialty cocktails. Try the smoked pork-belly sliders, steamed mussels with red chili coconut broth or the tiger prawn gazpacho coolers. This great location has an industrial loft setting to enjoy Happy Hour, dinner or dessert between shopping, movies and holiday plans. Head to Level 2 (above Saxon’s Fine Jewelers) for dessert or a late night snack when that cold weather cabin fever strikes.

Experience Central Oregon Winter In A Whole New Way

Imagine a quiet winter night in the Oregon high desert, lit only by a giant full moon fl oating on the horizon. The crisp air fi lls your lungs, moonlight sparkles on the white snow and all you hear is the soft crunching of your own feet. Feet that are fi rmly placed in … snowshoes!

That’s right, local experts from Wanderlust Tours specialize in taking small groups into remote natural areas while maintaining a low impact on the environment. In winter time, these areas are accessible by snowshoe. All tours are led by professional naturalist guides, who take guests off trails and away from the big city into the snowy forests of the Cascade Mountains. Guides provide vibrant natural and cultural history interpretation along the way and include a great time in the snow at any age.

Starlight Snowshoe Tours Revel under the light of Central Oregon’s starry sky in the darkness of the High Cascade Mountains while on snowshoes! Tour participants will learn about the constellations, watch for shooting stars and listen for the hush of the nighttime forest of the Cascades. Guests will be served hot chocolate with marshmallows at the end of the Starlight Tour.

Moonlight Snowshoe Tours run for the few nights surrounding each full moon from December to May and take place in wilderness areas around Mt. Bachelor and the surrounding Deschutes National Forest.

Bonfi re on the Snow Snowshoe a short distance to a quiet spot in the snowy forest to bask at a glowing bonfi re in the middle of an amazing amphitheater hand-carved into the snow! Relax around the fi re enjoying delectable desserts and hot drinks while naturalist guides share fun facts about the forest, animal life and the night sky! Bonfi re on the Snow dates are December 18,24,27,29 and 31.

Adventurers can also choose half-day tours by day beginning in late November and depending on snowfall. All half-day tours depart daily at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. from Bend and Sunriver. Isn’t it time to experience this special time of year in a whole new way? For reservations and information call Wanderlust Tours at (541) 389-8359 or (800) 962-2862 or on-line at www.wanderlusttours.com

Not all Birds Fly South for the Winter … Just Check Our Old Mill District Birding List Do you have a hankering to catch a glimpse of a downy woodpecker? Or perhaps a belted kingfi sher? The Deschutes River is a vital migratory pathway through Central Oregon for birds of all kinds. The Old Mill District is also home to dozens of species of birds and winter is no exception. You can still expect to see several different birds during the cold season.

Of course, we do what we can to keep them warm. Look around to discover habitat trees with more than twenty bird nest boxes installed on Old Mill District property on both sides of the Deschutes River.

Our beautifully illustrated Birding List is free and available for all our visitors to take up bird watching which is fun and educational. The Old Mill District and the East Cascades Audubon Society have teamed up to create an illustrated list of birds that are native to the area. Using this list while spending time on local trails, rivers and parks is just another way to enjoy all the wonderful wildlife the region has to offer.

The Old Mill District & Deschutes River Corridor Birding List free brochures are available at The Ticket

Snow, Mud, Sub-Zero Temperatures: Perfect for

CyclocrossThe 2010 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships returns to Bend for the second time and will be held December 8-12. Last year freezing temperatures couldn’t keep the racers (or the spectators) away – in fact inclement weather conditions are part of the fun! Cyclocross consists of many laps on a short course with various obstacles that the rider needs to quickly dismount carrying their bike over various terrains and up stairs before remounting and charging ahead on wooded trails, grass and steep hills.

The new 2010 championship race course is 500 yards longer and includes thrilling turns, heart-stopping obstacles and challenging technical sections with stairs, barriers and more, all winding through the Old Mill District.

“The race course we’ve designed for the 2010 National Championships will be the most complete and challenging cyclocross course the racers have ever seen,” said Brad Ross, race director in a release issued by USA Cycling. “The new course will have similar technical challenges as the 2009 course, but now includes long straightaways and additional features that will challenge every type of rider and will defi nitely produce worthy national champions.” Be sure to check out the cyclocross National Championships December 8-12 in the Old Mill District. Look for racers in all categories – from youth, men and women and from amateur to professional.

Central Oregon is a region fi rmly ensconced in the culture of fi ne beer and craft breweries. Perhaps there

is no better time of year than the holidays, when many local breweries release limited edition winter ales. These brews are created for the crisp winter days in Oregon, meant for sharing with friends and pairing with the rich and hearty foods that mark the holiday season. Here are just a few of the local beers brewed specifi cally to help you celebrate the winter season:

10 Barrel Brewing – Pray for Snow: This delicately balanced strong ale starts with dark copper color mixed with slight reddish hues and a light tan head. Big malty aroma with a Munich character give

way to a slight caramel and toffee mixed with spicy noble hop aroma, all wrapped together with a medium-bodied mouth

feel. German malt fl avor profi le with slight roasty notes gives Pray for Snow a subtle toffee sweetness balanced with spicy hop bitterness.

Bend Brewing Company – Black Diamond: This American-style dark lager is on draught at the brewery and features a rich dark brown color with some red highlights and an off-white head. Its toasty and roasty malt, along with a light caramel overtone deliver a smooth texture and a light body. Perfect for the chilly months!

Boneyard Beer – Black 13: This Schwarzbier is roasty and warm, yet light and pleasant in body with a roast malt aroma, tipped off by a bit of coffee. This beer can be found on tap at select locations around Oregon and at Boneyard’s warehouse brewery in Bend.

Cascade Lakes Brewing – Santa’s Little Helper: Helping out with the enjoyment of the holiday seasons, this winter seasonal beer arrives in the early fall and stays around till after the holidays. Crystal malt and Cascade hops produce a well-balanced strong ale that is perfect for nights around the fi replace with friends and family.

Deschutes Brewery – Jubelale: Jubelale is brewed with dark crystal malt creating a luscious holiday note with bountiful hops to excite the taste buds. For the past 16 years, Deschutes Brewery has selected a local Oregon artist to create an image evocative of the season’s festive atmosphere. The original artwork on the Jubelale label is a welcome addition each year to this fantastic beer. The intricate and unique art on the label enhances the Jubelale experience much like beautiful wrapping paper enhances a gift.

McMenamin – Kris Kringle: This traditional Yuletide ale, is brewed up each year by the busy-as-elves McMenamins brewers. Enjoy a big and bold malt complexity and hop profi le with Kris Kringle. This “winter warmer” highlights the rich, toasty, aromatic and chocolaty malt fl avors as its very sturdy foundation.

Silver Moon Brewing – Winter Moon: English IPA meets northwest winter: this slightly darker IPA packs a smidge more heat to lift the winter chill. Winter Moon is brewed with American, British and Belgian malts. Organic New Zealand hops provide bitterness while American and British hops blend a complex spice fi nish.

Three Creeks Brewing Company – Rudolph’s Imperial Red: This big, dark holiday beer is due out just before Thanksgiving. It is about nine percent alcohol and features a hoppy balance with a delightful aroma.

In celebration of our rich beer culture, Visit Bend has introduced the Bend Ale Trail – discover Bend’s seven breweries and get extra credit for visiting our eighth brewery in Sisters. Be sure to get your passport stamped at each location. Then head to the Visit Bend Welcome Center downtown(www.visitbend.com) and receive a commemorative Silipint® — a fl exible silicone pint glass which can be used and reused with endless beverage options. Silipint® is dishwasher, freezer, oven and microwave safe. They are BPA free, completely unbreakable and providedby a local Bend company. Cheers!

Annual winter festival offers thrills, spills and activities for the whole family. One of the best things about winter is it provides skiers and snowboarders a chance to catch some big air. In the Old Mill District thrill seekers and spectators alike can appreciate the demonstration of speed and height at the OnPoint Community Credit Union WinterFest. Presented by Mt. Bachelor, the event runs February 18 -20, 2011 and has become a major winter destination event for tourists from Portland to Seattle and beyond. Held over the President’s Day weekend, it is the perfect time for travelers to enjoy all that Central Oregon has to offer during the winter season.

A WinterFest main feature is the off-mountain rail jam— a colossal structure built in Bend’s Old Mill District. The U.S. Cellular Rail Jam takes a team of design engineers a week to build, and requires fi fty dump truck loads of snow to be hauled from Mount Bachelor into town. The event is the Northwest’s largest winter festival. Come for a great weekend of skiing or snowboarding at Mt. Bachelor and checkout all the great activities, live music and rail jam at the OnPoint WinterFest in Bend.

Family friendly activities at WinterFest include a kid’s performance and craft area with The Oregon Museum of Science (OMSI) Science Festival Kit including numerous

touch tables and brain teaser activities that will challenge a wide range of ages. Stroll through the European-style market, selling the Northwest’s best food, wine and fi ne art. Check out the amazing feats of snow carving and ice sculpting. Each evening offers live music on an outdoor stage.

Over the past six years WinterFest has awarded over $39,000 to local and regional charities that serve Oregon communities. This charitable contribution is raised in part each year by WinterFest button sales, which act as passes into the event for the entire weekend. The buttons go on sale in November at www.BendTicket.com and www.bendwinterfest.com
