Ben Waters delivers another
memorable evening at the
Old Ruts
Following on from Ben Waters’ visit
in the summer, over 100 people
squeezed themselves into the hall on
Friday 16 January. Most of the crowd
came for a second helping of the
amazing Ben Waters band, featuring
the virtuoso boogie woogie man and
human juke box Ben.
The two sax players, including Ben’s
teenage son, were on top form and
the rhythm section rock solid as you
would expect with Paul Young’s
drummer on stage.
Once the dancing started there was
no stopping it, except of course for a
pasty and chips break (we know the
value of good nutrition to endurance
sports). Many thanks to Pat, Emma &
Mark Hovell and the girls for sorting
all that. Further to the pasties, the
crowd were wowed by one particular
pro-dancing routine from a very
talented couple!
When he wasn’t tinkling the ivories,
Ben spent a lot of time over the
evening chatting with anyone who
wanted to as he is a particularly
approachable and nice guy.

Our President writes
New Year's Eve saw another
successful dance at the club well
attended and well enjoyed.
January has been a quiet month,
except for a noisy Ben Waters Boogie
Woogie Night when once again he
was on song. Well done Mr Stallard
for the organisation and to the ladies
who prepared the food.
My President's team, with captain
Peter Day, beat (7-0) the OR
Association Football team in their
annual match. With a bit of luck, the
footballer section would have
recruited one or two players from my
side.
You will probably read elsewhere
[unfortunately not in this edition as I
have received no submissions—Ed]
how well the junior rugby players are
doing as we now have a good showing
at County & Divisional level. It is
thanks to many dedicated coaches
that we have seen our teams
flourish.
In this issue of E-Orbit, you will find
an application form for the
Association Annual Dinner on
14 March.
We will be coming back home and
holding it in our recently re-furbished
hall at the clubhouse. As last year
we will be inviting members' partners
along to the event, if they so wish
(it's not compulsory!)
I shall be looking forward to watching
some rugby & football and hope to
see both codes working their way up
their respective leagues.

Our Chairman writes Finch & Co. ORA Sponsors
Nestled amongst the John Innes
designed Merton Park conservation
area, Finch & Co enjoys a unique
position.
‘Green flag’ awarded spaces, tree
lined avenues and beautiful
Edwardian houses occupy the
surrounding roads. The area feels
rural despite its proximity to London.
In the late 19th century, John Innes, of
compost fame, together with his
brother James, turned one of
London’s original garden suburbs into
a semi rural suburb for the City
businessmen of the time. Now in the
21st century, we can fully appreciate
the quality and style of these 1920s
and 1930s homes that were not
destroyed during the war. The homes
designed by Quartermain and
Brocklesby remain highly sought
after.
The Finch office team are
enthusiastic, exuberant and excited.
They speak with great affection for
the area, especially Beryl who has
been with the company for 23 years.
Her local knowledge is invaluable,
thanks to her super memory. With
Manager Katharine; Stefan, David
and Beryl provide a service to the
community which is unique.
Sponsorship and links with Old Ruts
sports club demonstrate that the
‘village’ spirit is alive and thriving. The
area is now home to all combinations
of housing stock, from flats and
cottages to large detached homes, all
The month of January is traditionally
a quiet month after the excesses of
the Christmas period. Coupled with
the current laudable “Go dry in
January” campaign, one would
expect that the Club would be like a
graveyard this month. Not so for the
hardy Old Rutlishian! The bar take so
far this month has been higher than
usual due to some remarkable
functions.
The return of Ben Waters organised
by our hard working Event and Bar
Manager has boosted our bar take
considerably. Not only was this event
a rip roaring success entertainment
wise but it was obviously a thirst
making event as well!
There has also been some sad
occasions as well, with the Club
being used for wakes. While the
facilities are available to anyone it is
particularly sad that these were for
relatives of Club Members.
The Clubhouse is being used more
and more in the week during the
daytime and your Executive
Committee are looking to increase
further daytime usage. If you wish to
make use of the facilities, be it for a
wake or a business meeting or any
reason for that matter, I am sure
that Mike Stallard would appreciate a
call. Catering can be arranged but
you do not even have to have the bar
open for those who wish to
concentrate! The Clubhouse is there
to be used and we have to pay the
overheads whether it is in use or not,
so if you can make use of it, it’s
there waiting for you!
Our hard working House and Ground
Chairman who doubles as the House
manager would also welcome a call if
you can offer any assistance in the
maintenance and general well-being
of the Club and its environs. No
special skill is necessary other than a
willingness to get stuck in.
There has been a request for more
cricket nets, possibly built on the car
park behind the Squash Courts.
Before we can consider this, we have
to establish the long-term future of
these courts. The Executive have had
several alternative suggestions to use
this building and are consequently
asking for Members’ views on their
use. Would they be missed if they
were discontinued in their current
format or even demolished and
replaced with something else?
Opinions are being collated by David
Doerr who would be only too pleased
to hear your views.
Finally, Andrew Fox and the Finance
Team are working hard to finalise the
year end accounts. I think that
almost certainly the turnover for the
bar has been a record year which is
due to some hard graft by the Bar
Team led by Donna Whetstone. This
was despite the fact that the Club
was closed for business for eight days
during the refurbishment period. The
wisdom of this investment is now
being more widely appreciated as all
bookings are now on the increase. An
additional main till has recently been
installed which is even faster than
the current one and will enable even
faster service – particularly at busy
times. In due course the benefits will
be noticeable when the profits are
reinvested in enhancing the
facilities.
All in all the message for 2015 is
clear – the Old Rutlishians’
Association is now fully open for
business.

The Monday night Curry Club has a
new chairman. And in the MonCCs’
typical spirit of innovation he has
introduced a prize competition.
To win, use your local knowledge to
work out where they went.
In January, the MonCCs visited a
restaurant in walking distance (even
for older MonCCs) of the clubhouse.
The staff make a brilliant chilli
cocktail to welcome you and the food
is as good in 2015 as it was in 2014,
even if the location had changed.
For a clue here is the owner
surrounded by MonCCs in disguise!
One more cryptic clue - take a river
in Namibia and make it older!
The restaurant’s owner has
generously offered a prize for the
winner of a meal for two up to £30 or
a 10% discount to a larger group.

The first team continues to be on
the receiving end of some
unfortunate results, losing by the
odd goal. League table below.
Match report:
1st XI game vs Puretown
The Club’s tough campaign and
severe shortage of any good fortune
was in full swing today as the 1st XI
went down 3 – 2 at home in a close
and very competitive match against
Puretown.
Bezza gave the Ruts the lead twice
and the OR’s led 2 – 1 at the
interval.
The visitors levelled from a penalty
and snatched a late winner in the
closing stages of injury time. The
Ruts put in a decent shift and
deserved a point for their efforts.

Twickenham & Stoop food & drink deal
David Kremer is a cricket dad at old
Ruts and a trustee at Youth Works
Enterprises charity that helps young
people find work and develop work-
place skills through Kneller Park
Gardens café. The café is often
closed during the winter months, so
to continue the training and help
with cash-flow it has teamed up with
London’s oldest micro-brewery,
Twickenham Fine Ales to service
rugby internationals and the Stoop
(see below for upcoming dates).
The cafe offers a good quality BBQ
(10% off voucher opposite), sampling
delicious local beer and the
opportunity of a quick tour and
questions answered about the
brewing process with the manager or
senior brewing staff member on a
match day. The brewery is only a
short walk from the stadium http://

Please let David know if you would
be willing to support the cafe by
meeting up and having a pre-match
beer and lunch with your friends? If
so, which match and how many
friends and he will arrange for you
to be met by the manager or senior
brewing staff member and make sure
you get your discounts and brewery
