PASTOR’S PARAGRAPHS

WITH JUNE UPON US, WE ENTER AN EXCITING TIME here at OTBC as we press forward together with our

mission of “Impacting Lostness through Disciple-making.”

WE HAVE TWO TEAMS HEADED TO SE ASIA in June. Pastor Mark is leaving on May 31st to continue his work

there among the T-people as he assists other partners from NC and from our state convention. In addition, he is contin-

uing to refine relationships with nationals and establish new ones. Each experience is a learning one for us and one that

God blesses in special ways. Pray for him as he follows God’s leading during his time there again this time.

LATER IN JUNE WE HAVE OUR STUDENT TEAM led by Pastor Joe, which will be going into SE Asia as well.

God used our team last year to do some incredible ministry and we are praying that He will use this team again to ac-

complish His purposes in and through them. Please pray for this team as they follow God’s direction in their lives also.

I AM EXCITED AS GOD HAS PUT TOGETHER OUR CHURCH PLANT TEAM under the leadership of Pas-

tor Jason. The team is assembled and is involved in training. Also, they are beginning to engage unchurched people as

they share with them their vision for a church plant in the South Fork community. I encourage you to pray for Pastor

Jason and this team as they move closer to launching a new church plant here in Winston-Salem.

WITH THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR COMES ONE OF OUR FAVORITE and most effective children’s

ministry opportunities in Vacation Bible School! Our dates this year are June 23-27 with family night on June 29th. I

am grateful for Shannon and for all who are working so hard to prepare for what promises to be a life-changing week

in the lives of many children. Please pray for all involved and pray that God will touch the hearts of many children

with the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I AM EXCITED TO HAVE REV. TERRY SMITH AND CINDY JOHNSON joining our staff on July 1st to lead

our worship ministry and to share in our discipleship ministry. I believe God has blessed them with amazing gifts that

He will use to enhance our worship and to increase our effectiveness at “impacting lostness.” I know you will give

them a warm Old Town welcome and remember just as with the rest of our staff, they are coming to lead ministries. In

order for any of us to lead ministries, we must have people volunteering and involved in the ministries for them to be

effective.

WHILE I AM CERTAINLY EXCITED TO HAVE TERRY AND CINDY joining our staff, I also want to express

my deep appreciation for the service of Willie McCoy and Jim Johnson over the past year who have served us so faith-

fully in an interim role. These men have worked so hard to make sure that we were able to continue to worship our

Lord each Sunday. I appreciate them and the worship team that includes our choir, praise team and praise band. Your

service adds value to our worship each week. To Willie and Jim, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you

have done to serve our Lord and His people here at Old Town over the past year. Your ministries have blessed us

greatly. We love and appreciate you so much!

YOU KNOW GOD CAN DO INCREDIBLE THINGS through a body of believers who are committed to Him and

dedicated to doing whatever it takes to work together to reach people with the gospel of Jesus Christ! I am excited

about the summer and the future here at OTBC. I trust that you are too. Pray that we will be faithful to that which God

wants us to do! I close with this powerful benediction written by the Apostle Paul to the Ephesian church:

“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power

that works within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever.

Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21)

MAY GOD BLESS YOU! SEE YOU ON SUNDAY!

Making Jesus Known Locally to Globally

“Spreading the Good News” is the slogan of The Gideons International, our Acts One 8 Challenge partner in June. This worldwide ministry, led by laypersons gave away nearly 79 million copies of God’s Word to people locally to globally last year alone. Your gifts to the Acts One 8 Challenge Offering provide for this vital mission ministry. Learn more about the Gideons by visiting, www.gideons.org.

Bread of Life Food Pantry – Give Away

The Great Give Away at the Bread of Life Food Pantry – Saturday, June 7 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. To help meet the needs of our neighbors, we are collecting household and clothing items. These items are needed: dishes, cookware, cooking utensils, silverware,

bed sheets, lamps, curtains, small furniture (like end tables, chairs), as well as children’s clothing. Items can be dropped off at the “Bread of Life” collection boxes near the Media Center and the CLC entrance. Or, they can be delivered to the Pilot Mountain Association Office on Long Drive. For more information, please contact Debbie Gambill at 712-8211.

OTBC Medical Mission

Medical Clinic is closed for the summer.

Clinics will resume on August 18.

Pray this month: Ask the Father to give rest to our volunteers and renew their passion for the work to begin again after the summer break. Also, pray the Father will provide all the volunteers – medical and non-medical – that will be needed to resume offering clinics in August.

Engaging T-People with Good News

God is working among our people, the T-People. Recently, one of our national partners announced four more people have indicated a willing-ness to be baptized to demonstrate their commitment to follow Jesus. This month, three teams will take the Gospel to the T-People both in their homeland and in Thailand. Pastor Mark will work with two teams through June 15. One of those teams is the Next Generation college team through the Baptist State Convention. Also, Pastor Joe will lead a Student team between June 17 and 27 to serve with partners living in Thailand. Team members include Jenna Bowman, Libby Brown, Timmy Brown, Ellen Graham, Andrew Hill, Amy Jones as well as Joe and Duncan Maye. As you pray, remember to ask the Father to strengthen believers, draw unbelievers to Himself and establish churches among the T-People in which they can grow as disciples. Praise the Father for all He is doing in and through our obedience.

On the Mark for Missions

But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria

and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth. Acts 1:8 (Amplified Bible)

Since you are so familiar with Jesus’ statement of our strategy for disciple-making recorded in Acts 1:8, I wanted

us to read it with a fresh set of eyes. With so many credible Bible translations, it is helpful for me to read familiar passag-es from different translations – just so I keep that fresh perspective on what God says to us through His word. When I do this, I am always struck with some different aspect of Truth. For instance, reading this verse from the Amplified Bible re-minds me that Acts 1:8 is not as much a command to share the Gospel as it is an indication of what happens when I am filled with the Spirit: I will share the Gospel! That realization is both encouraging and convicting! Filled with God’s Spirit, I see with spiritual eyes and understand that the most important thing I have to offer people is the Good News about Je-sus!

The Bible indicates that, filled with the Spirit, we will share this message in our local community and to the farthest reaches of the planet as well as places in between. I am thankful for a church family that embraces Jesus’ strategy to make Him known locally to globally. This summer, we have many opportunities to do just that. On June 7, we will part-ner with the Bread of Life Food Pantry for a “Give Away” to benefit our neighbors in need. You can read more about this in a related Crier article. Also, our students will host a sports camp to share the Gospel in the Waughtown area the week of July 21. And, we are planning to take a V.B.S. Road Trip on Sunday nights this August. V. B. S. (Vacation Bible School) is our most evangelistically effective ministry among children; more children come to know Jesus during that in-tensive week than at any other time throughout the year. Remember to pray for our V.B.S. leaders and the children who will attend in our facilities the week of June 23. After serving well in our facilities, we plan to take those activities/lessons/games/crafts into some of our neighborhoods on Sunday afternoon/evenings in August. Please pray for the Father’s di-rection and provision for this. Ask Him what role He wants you to play in taking the Gospel to the streets of our town on a V. B. S. Road Trip. Perhaps you can volunteer your yard as a location to meet. Maybe God will lead you to teach a les-son or a craft or a game. It might be that the Lord wants you to provide snacks or help with “crowd control”. There is a way for everyone to make Jesus known to local children and families. Let me know how God is leading you to help.

During our recent Annie Armstrong Easter Offering emphasis for North American missions, many of us learned about the SEND City strategy adopted by the North American Mission Board. Across North America, Southern Baptist church planters have converged on major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Saint Louis and Toronto. God’s Spirit has prompted some of His brightest young (and in some cases older) servants to leave their comfort zone and make Jesus known in cities with little Gospel presence. Please join me in prayer as we seek the Father’s direction about which church plant team in which Send City He wants us to partner. Of course, we are all also praying for the Church Plant Team being launched from Old Town to the Southfork community. As they continue to execute their strategy with Pastor Jason’s leadership, we will also assist them in that work. How awesome that God would use us in partnership with a church planter in our city as well as in another significant city on our continent! Thank you for praying about both those opportunities.

Lest we forget, God’s Spirit also fills and empowers us as His witnesses to the ends – at the bounds – of the earth! You know our commitment to the T-People of Southeast Asia. Thank you, church, for your perseverance in pray-ing, going and giving to shine Jesus’ light in that dark place. God is using us in a great way. You can read about the three teams serving there this month in another article in this newsletter. Please continue to pray that God will use our going to make Jesus known. God is pleased when we embrace His passion for the nations – for all the peoples of the planet. That is something to rejoice about. Praise the Lord for His goodness in working through our obedience. And, thank you church for the ways in which we collectively are pursuing obedience!

Celebrating with you! Pastor Mark

June…the year is halfway over! Wow! Hope you all are making the most of each day! Summer break is almost here

for most of our school-age children and that means more time to spend outside and enjoy God’s creation. One of my

favorites would be the “lightning bug”. I have always enjoyed watching them (used to like catching them) and now I

am even more in awe because I see all the details that God used when He created even this small creature. It makes me

think of all that God has created. It also makes me think of how God created each of us with a purpose. It is my prayer

that we will all find ways to grow closer to God, through reading our Bibles, praying, and sometimes just spending time

listening for what God wants to tell us…all to seek out the purpose that God has for us while we are here. Hope you all

will have a great June! Keep reading for some of the things that will be happening in the KidzTown world in the com-

ing months.

Please note…CentriKid campers will have a special meeting, with their parents, on Sunday, June 1st, directly

following the 11:00 AM worship service. We will meet upstairs in the Big Town classroom, where most campers will

already be located. At this time the remaining $90 will be due. Campers will be selecting their “special track times”

that they would like to participate in. You will also be completing a health form that will be notarized by Mrs. Maxine

on that day. A front and back copy of your insurance card will also be needed. Please have the insurance card copied

and ready to attach to your form. Please make plans to be at this meeting on June 1st!

Awana ended with our Awana Wow Celebration on May 18th. All of our children worked so very hard this year

as they were hiding God’s Word in their hearts. Many awards were given for completion of books. Many wonderful

memories were made. I love seeing how much children grow during Awana. I am already looking forward to starting

back up in September. I would like to thank all of those wonderful individuals that made delicious freezers of home-

made ice cream. It is always a yummy time when we enjoy homemade ice cream together. Thank you also to all that

served in Awana this year. We definitely could not have had the successful year that we had without each and every

one of you. I hope you all are looking forward to returning to Awana in the fall. If you are not serving in Awana, but

are interested, please get in touch with me right now. We are already making plans for the fall.

The Power Up children (Grades K-5th) led in worship by presenting their program, Hallelujah, What a Savior,

on Sunday evening, May 18th. I hope you were able to be there to hear them sing praises to our Lord and Savior, Jesus!

They also took a trip to share with the residents of Independence Village. That was a very special time too! As we ap-

proach the summer months, I just want you to know that we will continue to meet for both Praise Pals and PowerUp on

Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30. We are looking forward to learning more about Jesus during the coming months,

but also having some summer-fun along the way too!

It’s the month of Vacation Bible School! It will be Monday, June 23rd through Friday, June 27th from 5:45-8:30.

The theme of our 2014 VBS will be Agency D3 – Discover, Decide, Defend – 1 Peter 3:15. Dinner will only be provid-

ed for VBS workers and their families each evening. It is very important that all volunteers stop by the VBS table

(outside of the media center) to sign up for dinner (if you wish to eat here) and also childcare for children not old

enough to participate in VBS. We need an accurate count for both of those. Also, please continue to pray for all the

preparation that goes in to VBS and for all that will take place during the week of VBS. It’s going to be a great time,

focused on our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Also, VBS Family Night will take place on Sunday evening, June 29 th, at

5:45 PM.

Speaking of Sunday, June 29th…it is a 5th Sunday. We will not have any separate children’s worship on that

day. So, no Small, Mid or Big Town during the 11:00 service on that day. Many of our children will be singing at both

services on that day. I hope you will all make plans to be here. It’s going to be a great day!

Please keep a look out for more information about what all will be happening this summer in regards to Sunday

evenings. The schedule will be different in the months of June, July and August, with the first being Sunday evening,

June 1st, for the picnic out at Tanglewood. More to come! Stay tuned to the bulletin!

Thank you for your continued support and encouragement! Please contact Mrs. Shannon to find your spot to

volunteer with KidzTown at Old Town or with any questions that you may have either by calling the church office or by

E-mail at [email protected]. Hope you have a great June...looks like an exciting one in KidzTown!

JUNE

We’ve entered the home stretch of the school year for our OTBC students! Final tests, projects, and exams are

coming to a close and the days of summer-break are fast approaching. This summer will be jam packed with

some incredible opportunities to worship, serve, and proclaim the name of our Great God. We’re gearing up for

all of these and prayerfully expecting great things from our Great God. For many, this will be the last several

weeks at their respective schools before they move on to new ponds. Whether it is transitioning schools or

grades, this is a significant time for all of our students.

In particular we want to congratulate all of our students graduating from both High School and College. It is a

great honor of ours to be able to walk alongside them through these significant moments in their lives. We are so

proud to be brothers and sisters in Christ with each of you and are anxious to see how God will continue to grow

and use you for His Kingdom in whatever He has in store for your future. Congratulations – and please know

that we are constantly praying for you and always here to support you!

Please join us as we celebrate and recognize the Class of 2014 during Graduate Recognition Sunday on June 8th.

In our Frontline time, we have been walking through a Cross-Cultural training series called “Mosaic” on

Wednesday nights for how to effectively share the Gospel across cultural lines. Our goal is to understand and

admire the diversity represented in God’s creation and how it brings glory to His name. This training has been

helpful, practical, and Kingdom advancing. In particular, this time has been very profitable in preparing us to be

on mission for our Lord. We have several specific chances to do that coming up this summer, both locally and

globally. In our global missions, we have a Student team of 8 people who will be going to SE Asia this June to

proclaim the name of Christ. Please join us in prayer that hearts will be softened, lives will be changed, and God

will be glorified. This is such an amazing opportunity and we’re all so excited to see God work to achieve His

global redemptive purposes.

Finally, for this summer we will be having a unique but exciting summer plan for our students and families! All

families of students are invited to join our end of the year dinner together to hear more about this on June 8th in

the Multi-purpose room at 5:00pm.

Enjoy the last couple weeks of school and have a great kickoff to your summer!

Thank you so much for your continued prayer and support of our Student Ministry!!

In Christ,

Joe Maye
