Engaging T-People with Good News

Two men from our church family, John and Mark, are serving among the T-People through June 14. Pray for these men as they continue partnership development, provide training for national believers, share the Gospel, and follow up on new believers. Ask the Father to extend His Kingdom and establish His Church among this unreached people group living in a spiritually dark land. Please continue pray-ing each day using the ‘T-People’ prayer book marks. More prayer guides are avail-able in the Welcome area.

Bread of Life Food Pantry

Thank you church for continuing to share Jesus’ love with people in need. Your food donations feed indi-viduals and families each week through the Thurs-day food distribution. The Pantry’s summer hours are 1:00 – 7:00 p.m. The neighbors, loved by God, are shown love by God’s people through the food they receive as well as the spiritual guidance and

prayer given. Ongoing food items needed include: jelly, peanut butter, pudding cups, jello, canned fruit,

pasta, Spaghetti sauce & canned meats, crackers, instant potatoes, green beans, corn and cereal. Pray that the people receiving food gifts will also receive

God’s gift of salvation. To learn how you can get more involved, contact Susie Weddle at

[email protected] or 768-3978.

FROM OUR PASTOR

THE BIBLE SAYS IN EPHESIANS, CHAPTER 4:

“There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.” (Ephesians 4:4-6)

Paul is asserting the unity of the Spirit amidst the diversity of gifts in Ephesians, chapter 4. The church is one body under the Lordship of one Lord – Jesus Christ. With that said, one of the challenges for us as a body here at OTBC is the fact that we have two worship opportuni-ties on Sunday morning. While I love and appreciate both of them and believe that they both serve a God-honoring purpose, it is always a special joy for me when we have opportunity to meet together as one body for worship. With that in mind, I have some great news to share with you about summer worship at OTBC. I realize that the summer months are challenging for us in church life because so many people tend to be away especially on the weekends. I think it is great for families to have a time of vacation, rest and renewal during the summer, when you are in town on Sunday, I hope you will be here in church.

I PROMISE YOU THAT EVERY SUNDAY WILL BE SPECIAL this summer, but there are three Sundays I want you to mark on your calendars right now. On the last Sunday of June, July and August we are doing a revised schedule so that we can worship together on those Sundays. Bible study/Sunday school will begin at 9:00 AM and worship will begin at 10:15 AM on the last Sunday of June, July and August. I am so excited to share with you what is planned for each of those special schedule Sundays.

SUNDAY, JUNE 24 AT 10:15 AM: “SINGING TO THE LORD NEW AND OLD SONGS” We will gather in the CLC and we will worship together led by the choir, the Men’s Chorus, the Awakening band and praise team and no doubt some other surprises. I will preach a message from God’s Word that day, but we will share in a great time of worship as we share in the church music of yesterday and today. In addition, we’ll hear a brief report from one of our Gideons. You will not want to miss this day! But there’s more …

SUNDAY, JULY 29 AT 10:15 AM: “DR. DENNIS SWANBERG” We are thrilled to be able to host Dr. Dennis Swanberg, known as “The Swan” and “America’s Minister of Encouragement.” He is a minis-ter who will challenge us with life-enriching Bible truth while at the same time lift our spirits on the wings of laughter. Change your plans if you have to, but make sure you are here for this very special worship opportunity! Tell all your friends too!!!

SUNDAY, AUGUST 26 AT 10:15 AM: “DR. MICHAEL BLACKWELL AND BCHNC” I am so excited for OTBC to be able to host Dr. Michael Blackwell and the Baptist Children’s Homes of NC. We’ll have approximately 100 children from the homes with us that day and they will share in our worship service and Dr. Blackwell will bring God’s message to us. I have heard him speak many times and I have seen the children’s presentations several times over the years. We are sure to be extremely blessed on this day as God will pour down His blessings on us through this special worship opportunity.

SO AS YOU CAN SEE, THE SUMMER AT OTBC promises to be very special indeed. Take your vacation and then hurry back, because when you miss, you are going to miss a very special blessing that you will not be able to get back! Enjoy your summer for the glory of God!

SEE YOU ON SUNDAY!

Proverbs 27:17 states, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”

We as men need to strive to sharpen one another spiritually and encourage one another in our walks with Christ. IRON MEN will meet on the second Wednesday of each month in the CLC (6:30 a.m. - 7:30 a.m.) Our next gathering is on June 13th . We will serve breakfast ($2 per person) and coffee. Please register on the website or contact Pastor Jason via email [email protected] or by phone 336-480-8000.

Notes On Worship From Pastor Dean

The essence of the Lifestyle of Worship is constant communication and interaction with God. We grow toward a wor-shiping lifestyle when we come to see worship less as an event we attend on Sundays, and more as an action we take within our hearts. Sunday morning is a great time for worship! But it is far from the only time. One of our Bible readings for the week in which I’m writing this is Psalm 113, which says:

“From the rising of the sun to the going down of it and from east to west, the name of the Lord is to be praised.” Psalm 113:3 The Amplified Bible

Contained within this beautiful language about sunrises and sunsets are some clear answers regarding worship. Where? From the place the sun rises to the place it sets: everywhere under the expanse of the sky! When? From the time of sunrise to the time of sunset: every moment of every day! (This doesn’t mean you can’t worship at night; the words simply mean “all day long.”) In other words, praise should be a part of our whole lives.

So how do we communicate with God all day long? “Well, Pastor Dean, that sounds like prayer.” You’re right! Prayer is communication with God, and prayer is an important act of worship. God desires that our prayer life become less formal and more constant; “Pray without ceasing,” I Thessalonians 5:17 tells us. Unceasing prayer may not sound like the traditional “church prayer,” although there’s nothing wrong with those prayers. It will likely sound more like… just talking, to a dear friend who cares about everything that’s happening in your life.

“But, Pastor Dean, I thought worship was all about music.” Well, music is a big part of worship. God created music, and He always enjoys hearing a song from you! You may not be a star soloist, but a song from your loving heart will bring a smile to God’s face. Next time you’re in the car, instead of singing along with the latest hit on your choice of radio station, why not sing a song that connects your heart with God’s heart? For you, that might be “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”… or it might be “Great I Am.” Those choices matter much more to us than they do to God. Just sing to Him, and enjoy His presence.

I have merely scratched the surface, and I’m out of space! Look for more in the coming months about what the Lifestyle of Worship might look like in our lives. And above all, keep worshiping!

The Gospel: Assumed or Explicit?

Over the past 2 years I have developed a deep and passionate love for the Gospel. This renewed passion has caused me to read Scrip-ture differently and has challenged me to think about how I live my life, how I make my decisions, how I teach the Bible, how I par-ent my kids and how I more truly love and cherish my wife. The Gospel is beautiful, powerful and life transforming…but do we really understand it, or do we merely assume it? Over the past 6 months I have read 3 incredible books that I like to call the Gospel Trilogy, which is made up of, Gospel by JD Greear, Jesus + Nothing = Everything by Tullian Tchividjian and the Explicit Gospel by Matt Chandler. These books have challenged, convicted, encouraged, edified and caused me to come to a more robust and substantive understanding of the Gospel and its implications in my life. Instead of merely writing out my thoughts, I am going to share some powerful insights from the most recent book I read, the Explicit Gospel.

"It is imperative that our gospel take the shape of the Scripture's epic vision of God's redemptive plan. It is imperative that we em-brace a gospel that is scaled to the glory of God."

"People who understand the gospel of Jesus Christ seek to put sin to death because they understand that sin is a lion and will eventu-ally destroy and devour them. By grace and in grace we scour every corner of our hearts, every square inch of our lives, and probe

our minds to find anything that is not in submission to Jesus Christ, and we eradicate it altogether for the glory of God, for the safety of our soul, and for the love of those around us."

"We are after a gospel that is resolutely centered on the atoning work of Christ and scaled to the glory of God. Let the explicit gospel drive us to worship with "all the fullness of God" and in awe of both God's immense, universe-subsuming glory and His deep, per-

sonal love for sinners. May we never assume that people understand this gospel but, instead, let's faithfully live out and faithfully pro-claim the explicit gospel with all the energy and compassion our great God and King has graciously given."

“Is the gospel assumed in your relationships? Or is the gospel explicit? The issue with an assumed gospel is that it is often too personal and, therefore, becomes private. People who live under the assumption

of the gospel often know how it relates to their life, but nobody else does. Their kids never see how the gospel affects decisions argu-ments, finances, etc. Their neighbors never hear of the hope within. Their coworkers are left to wonder about what makes them differ-ent. Those who live under the assumed gospel often find it awkward to bring it up and talk about the work of Christ. Why? Because

they never bring it up and learn to articulate the implications of Christ’s atoning work in their life. On the contrary, those who are ex-plicit about the gospel in their relationships have a different effect. By living out the gospel and speaking about the gospel and working through the gospel (verbally), they are helping to connect the dots for those around them. Their kids hear how the gospel relates to the family finances or time or relationships or arguments. Their neighbors hear about the hope within. Coworkers are privy to the reality

that this person is not simply a moral guy or girl, but one who is forgiven and transformed by the death and resurrection of Christ.”

Striving to be a Disciple, Pastor Jason

The first Thursday in each month the senior adults have their Triple “L” Covered Dish Luncheon at 12 Noon. Those who come bring a covered dish of their choice. Special programs are planned and enjoyed by all. A business meeting is con-ducted and a devotion is hared by Senior Adult Pastor Jimmy. On the Mark for Missions “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;

and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

Recently, I shared with a mission group from another church in our state about our involvement with the T-People of Southeast Asia. As a group, they have not come as far along on their missional journey as has our church family. Like us, they are in process of discovering God’s heart for the nations; they just happen not to have come as far down the road as us; yet, they are on the way. This group is eager to grow in their understanding of an involvement with the mission of God. During a question and answer time at the end of my presentation, one of the men said, “Why do we need to go off ‘over there somewhere’ since there are thousands of people here who need to hear about Jesus? Shouldn’t we share the Gospel among our own people?” I replied, “Absolutely. Yes, sir, we should share the Gospel with our own people. And, we should share the Gospel with people everywhere else the Lord sends us.” Then I shared important truths drawn from Jesus’ state-ment above:

Sharing the Good News is a natural result of our living a vibrant relationship with God. I used to take the statement from Acts 1:8 as a command from Jesus; and, in a sense it is. Yet, in another sense it is a ‘cause and effect’ statement: “When the Holy Spirit comes on you . . . you will be my witnesses . . . .” The natural ‘overflow’ of a Spirit-filled life is an eagerness to share with others the reality of the relationship we enjoy with the Lord. Sharing Good News is not as much a “got to” as it is a “get to”. You and I get to – we have the privilege and joy of – sharing with others how they can know God through faith in Jesus. Think of it this way: we talk about the things – and especially the people – that are most important to us. How many times have you viewed pictures of other peo-ple’s children or grandchildren? Countless times! Why? Because people share about the people they value most. So, when Jesus is central to our lives, we share Him with others every chance we can find!

Sharing the Good News is a calling we have to all people everywhere. When we consider Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the ends of the earth geographically, we are compelled to think of all the world’s people. Approximately 11,500 people groups (distinct groups of people with a unique worldview, culture and language) live on earth today. Among them, more than 6,500 are unreached with the Gospel – only a small percentage of those in that people group know Jesus as Savior. Of them, more than 3,200 people groups are considered “unengaged” with the Gospel; that is, as far as we know, no one is intentionally evangelizing, discipling and planting churches among that people group. So, more than ½ of the world’s people enjoy little to no access to the Gospel. God’s desire is that these people are reached with the Gospel. And, He has no plan other than the calling He has placed on us – His people – to share Good News with all people.

Sharing Good News is an assignment to be carried on in four different geographical fields simultaneously. Our calling is the share the Gospel with people living in all four of these ‘fields’ at the same time rather than one after the other. In other words, we don’t be-gin sharing the Good News across the US only after our city and state are reached with the Gospel. We begin sharing around the world even as we are sharing at home and everywhere in between. Now certainly every individual cannot share everywhere. Yet, all of us can share wherever the Lord calls us to go even as we are sharing as we go about everyday life at home.

I am so glad to be part of a church family whose members understand our clear calling from God to live as Jesus’ witnesses locally to globally. God has blessed us because we are attempting obedience to His calling to “Make Jesus Known” everywhere we are able to go. I trust that you are taking advantage of opportunities God gives you daily to share Jesus with the people He has placed in your path. And, that you are open to His calling to share Good News through other opportunities available. Some of those include assisting with the Medical Mission, the Bread of Life Food Pantry, the “Running the Pointe” basketball tournament and many other local ministries. Some of those opportunities include teams that will serve overseas in the coming months (in Brazil this July; in Southeast Asia in October; and, in Southeast Asia and South Africa early in 2013). Please continue praying for all of us to be obedient to God’s call. Not everyone can go somewhere else. But, all of us are al-ready here. And, in obedience, we can pray and share. And, we can encourage and send those called to go other places. Thank you church for having a heart to embrace unreached people with God’s love – whether they live far away or nearby. God is glorified through our obedi-ence to His calling! Expecting great things from God,

Pastor Mark
