Your new member kits have already been mailed and you will probably have received them by the time you read this. RE N E W A L S . . . Alex Bowab Dick Nelson Marty Blumenthal Chris Lucas Mike Macken Wayne Heinen John Callarman GRAY HAIR TIME AT Ha- The Publishing Committee greatly appreciates the understanding and fine cooperation of the membership and the editors during the last few difficult weeks. Our printer has also visibly aged of late - because of the mail problems we have been unable to adhere to our planned schedule of publication dates and this has greatly complicated his installation of new press equipment to replace that destroyed in the January fire. it-e hope to finish Volume 37 according to the following schedule: April 27th, May lhth, June bth, July 4th. July 31 st, and August 29th. We expect to be printing on Sadurday and mailing on Sunday although we can't make this firm until we try it out for a number of issues. In the mean time work on the new log is progressing Steadily but that too has been disturbed by the strike; both the master deck from Berman and the master data from Edmunds got held up. We have worked out a fine format for the new log; it will be the same size as DX NEWS, but instead of a staple binding t h ~ ~ ~ g ' s 170 pages will be held in a plastic spiral GBC binding which will allow the Log to lie flat when open. It'll be a real beauty! Much more info on the 1970 NRC Log ncxt issue.. . GPN

l i s t i w i n DDXD for 3/14. I have been collecting patterns for 18 months & core- la t ing reception w/calculations of radiated pwer t o establish agreement or d is - a,geement-calculations t o experience. The sheets do, a s he says, give pound- wave values. The resul ts have been conclusive i n favor of being able t o predict reception si tuations w/extrerne accuracy. I have traveled t o distant places and can easik- predict ahead of time what t o expect when I arrive. Recent exchan.;es w/~ichard .load confirm the correlation w e r distances up t o 5,000 miles. Consid- er the angle a t which energy m i s t leave the antenna s i t e i n order t o span long distances. The angle must be ve r j lcw, the longer t he distance, the l w e r t h e a ~ l e . Ixsmination of a ve r t i ca l plot of a normal ver t ica l brcadcast antenna shcws thpt maximum radiation on any bearing occurs a t ground level. As the ele- vation i s increasd toward ver t ica l , thd field intentisy is reduced u n t i l it reaches zero (ideally) directly w e r t he antenna. This is t rue in nul ls a s well as on peaks. The KSCO calculation gave 6 watts tcward me & I had previously es- timated ew copy of them here t o be highly unlikely. When I did copy them, it qual i f ie l as an unlikely experience, & I contacted them. I found they were 25Ow non-directional a t the tine. The estimate tha t 6w t o here from Santa C N Z is un- l ikely holds - the copy a t 250w was marginal. I am preparing an a r t i c l e fo r GFT& ctmsider~tion on t h i s subject. The object is t o present accurate information useful t o the general membership & hopefilly t o present a method by Ybich quanti- ta t ive inforotation can be made available t o those who want it. No question tha t i f i f the skip is working, the s ta t ion can be heard i f the channel is clear, but h m good a n i ~ h t do you need, and which other s ta t ions w i l l interfere hov much? The object is t o DX smr te r , & t h i s i s a s tep tward be t t e r understarding. wTIC and lEUl protect each other w/pt terns . The FCC specifies the ground-vave pattern for proof, & the CJ?a c i t e maximum allowable radiated values a t ground level. Is a l l 0s t h i s irrelevant?
