improving their skills in sketching & painting designs

for ceramic masks.

Mr Philp’s 7A Science class experienced first-hand some examples of how pressure is used in everyday life. They used a pump up water rocket to explain how

pressure makes things move.

To increase skill development in other areas, and to gain some real life experiences, extra-curricular opportunities at Windsor High school are provided on a weekly basis. Year 9 RFS Cadets learning to put

out a gas fire!

This week a great experience was had by a group of students who were invited to attend the Children's Book Council awards ceremony which included a free book for each of the students. The highlight was meeting some of our favourite authors, including

Emily Rodda.

Year 10 had a fabulous day at the “ bstreetsmart” driver safety excursion. Mr Cotter and Mrs Khalid were extremely impressed with the students of

Windsor High, they were a credit to our school.

Acknowledgement of Aboriginal culture continued at Windsor High this week with the completion of our Koomurri Day canvas painting, which has the long neck turtle painted on it which is the Darug people

totem.

The Tell Them From Me student

feedback survey

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours on Thursday September 5. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Monday September 5. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from the website above.

HSIE NEWS THE BATTLE of the ANCIENT WORLDS!! 8S HSIE class recently finished a Unit on “The Ancient Worlds” where they examined the fascinating cultures of “Ancient Egypt” and “Ancient Rome”. Whilst studying these two different worlds students were asked to compare and contrast the two very different empires and decide which was the “Most Superior Empire of the Ancient World.” Students generated criteria which they would use to judge the two civilisations including strength and power, culture, buildings and monuments, health and medicine, inventions and technology, and great leaders. Amazing Models…. During this case study several students created some amazing models from the Ancient Egyptian and Roman Worlds. Tara H constructed an amazing ‘Roman Temple’, Brad C designed an outstanding model of the ‘Pyramids of Khufu and the Sphinx,’ and Ethan H created a fascinating model of an Egyptian Sarcophagus (coffin) with a mummified Egyptian inside!

The Mummification Process…. As part of our investigation into the culture and beliefs of Ancient Egypt, 8S also participated in a “Re-enactment of the Embalming Process”, where we mummified the body of an Egyptian Pharaoh. Students were intrigued and shocked to learn about some of the very graphic steps involved in this sacred ceremony, with Ben T commenting on the elements involved in trying to extract the brain through the nose using an iron hook and rinsing the remains out with liquid. Olivia H, Ryan L, Brad C, Ben T and Alyssa F-J were outstand-ing actors in this simulation and were very proud of their efforts at the end of the process, placing the sacred “Death Mask” over the pharaoh’s head to conclude the ceremony.

The Great Debate… This Case Study was concluded with 8S conducting a “Great Debate” to see which empire was truly the su-perior civilization. After some study and coaching of how to actually participate in a formal debate, all class members enthusiastically brought their arguments to the audience. The cases on both sides were so strong that it was difficult to decide a winner! Students were so passionate about their chosen civilization that they were also able to contribute some amazing ‘counter-arguments’ too – with Ryan L and Shayleah P being the two stand-outs in this particular skill! “This seemed to bring out the battle-beast in everyone as Team Egypt explained how they created the ‘Chariot’, but that idea was brought down when Team Rome countered that Egypt had actually stolen this design when another empire attacked them with it, so they had therefore not created it themselves!” (Quote by Shayleah P, 8S). So with these activities from the Ancient World, and last weeks Vikings Activity day – Year 8 is truly being immersed into some amazing cultures from World History. And stay posted for more HSIE news later this term, when Year 8 will cap off their studies with a “Vikings Challenge Day” where students will form teams and battle their way through challenges from the Viking World, followed by a BBQ lunch and Viking Film to celebrate the end of their investigations into the Viking Era! The New South Wales Department of Education, The Smith Family and the Advocate for Children and Young People are part-ners on the project. Students in Years 7/8 and 9/10 have been invited to participate. Students in selected classes will be sent home with a Parent/Guardian Information Statement two weeks be-fore the survey takes place. Students will complete the survey in Term 3, in Weeks 6 or 7. The survey will take 25-30 minutes during class time and will ask about the types of items and activities that all young people should have. It will ask young people about their overall well-being and life satisfaction, including asking about some basic infor-mation about themselves, their family and their friends and social networks.

The Children’s Book Council of Australia - Book of the Year Awards

Windsor High Students were given the rare and prestigious opportunity to attend the Children’s Book Coun-cil of Australia, Book of the Year awards on Friday 19th August. Jacob T, Shayleah P, Hayley S, Cassidy S, and Jesse D, as our best library book readers were chosen to attend. Excitement mounted as these students were given the opportunity to read the short list books in the Older Readers category first. We caught the train into the city, which gave the students a chance to compare book notes and discuss their favourites. At the venue, a display was held showcasing all the Book Week posters for the last 70 years, and the students really enjoyed looking at them. Upon finding our seats, we were all excited to find a goodie bag that included a book for each of us and the opportunity to show off our book knowledge with a quiz. The ceremony itself was conducted by author Nathan Luff and all awards were presented by Our Governor General, the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove. The students all enjoyed seeing their favourite authors and guessing who was going to be the stand outs in each category. A highlight was the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement award to Children’s book Illustrator, Robert Ingpen. At the conclusion of the ceremony, we were invited to purchase books, mingle with the authors, and snack on a very impressive lunch. Meeting some of our favourite authors was by far the best part of our day. It was a great day, topped off by getting a free book to take home. Needless to say, the train ride back involved lots of book reading. By Jacob T The day began by meeting Miss Tait and the other students from our school who were going on this excur-sion at Mulgrave Station. When the train came we took our seats and began talking to pass the time. When we got to Central Station, we got off and walked to Belmore Park where we had morning tea. We then walked to the Conference Centre where we sat through a presentation where the awards were given to the winning authors of all the books that made it to the short list. When the presentation was over we went into the foyer where we got signatures from different authors including Emily Rodda and Morris Gleitzman and some very delicious caramel slice. When we got back to Central Station we caught the train back to Mul-grave. By Shayleah P. When we first boarded the train to Central Station, we were full of excitement and chocolate we had shared before the train came. Once we arrived at Central, we had a bite to eat at Belmore Park before we went to the Teacher’s Federation Building for the awards ceremony. After the ceremony, we saw many authors in person, including Morris Gleitzman (author of ‘Soon’) and Emi-ly Rodda (author of the ‘Deltora Quest’ series)! It was so much fun, talking to different authors and getting autographs. After an amazing day, it felt alright to relax on the train back home and read the books we bought or re-ceived for free. We can’t wait for next year, that’s for sure. By Cassidy S. On Friday 19th August, we went to the Children’s Book Council awards ceremony. We got a free book and there were some really good authors there. We met Emily Rodda and she signed some books, same with

Morris Gleitzman. There was free food, which was nice.
