OLTL FANTASY FICTION SCRIPT 41- DEDICATED TO THE MEMORYOF SHEYNA RAMONEAND FOR ABBY MAMAROLE-BUTTERWECK-By Kaydee Barnett

(Nora and Bo have returned home. The evidence of the struggles that tookplace during their in-home captivity is in the mess all over their living room. They are happy to be home, but they stand on opposite ends of the couchstill seemingly awkward with each other.)

NORA: (seeking a distraction to the silence) Im so glad to be out of thoseGod-awful hospital clothes! I never thought the sight of my ransacked livingroom would be such a welcome sight.

BO: I getcha, but I am going to get this place cleaned up so we can enjoyour return without distractions.

NORA: (visibly relieved) Great idea! Ill help you.

(She practically dives into tidying up the house but seems even more

grateful that the doorbell rings. Bo is already heading to answer the door bythe time she turns around, so she continues to clean up. Bo opens the doorand is surprised to see Judge Fitzwater on the other side.)

BO: Your Honor! What an unexpected surprise! Pleasant, but unexpected.

FITZWATER: Good evening, Commissioner. Please accept my apologies forshowing up here unannounced, and so late.

NORA: (quickly moving to greet the judge) Oh, dont be silly, Your Honor!Come, come!

(She directs Fitzwater to the loveseat, then realizes that she hadnt finishedher cleaning assignment and blushes. She races ahead of the judge andquickly begins to tidy a space for her.)

NORA: Please excuse the disasterwe, umwell, we were otherwiseengaged and we came back late

FITZWATER: (sympathetically) Counselor, please dont worry yourself aboutsomething so unimportant. And its not a mess at all. Please, sit.

BO: (locking his front door) Can I get you something, Judge?

FITZWATER: Tea with some lemon would be just lovely. Thank you.

BO: Be back in a jiff.

(Bo scurries off to the kitchen and Nora turns to Fitzwater.)

NORA: Not that Im not appreciative of the gesture, Your Honorbut whyARE you here?

FITZWATER:I wanted to come by and tell you personally how thankful I amfor the safe return of you and the Commissioner. He was very helpful andvery supportive of some things in another matter, and he assisted megreatly along with John McBain.

    NORA: Really? I didnt know.

FITZWATER: With everything that had taken place right after he and thelieutenant visited, I pretty much doubt that you two had any time to talkabout anything relevant. You are one of my most admired attorneys, and

your husband is one I respect most highly in law enforcement. Putting thataside, you two are very wonderful human beings.

NORA: Well..um, thank you. I really didnt know what to say.

FITZWATER: (chuckling) You said thank you. That is the proper response,Im sure. Nora, lets take a walk in your garden for a moment, shall we?

NORA: (completely confused, but compliant) Ah..yeah, sure. (Bo returnswith the cup of tea.) Bo? Judge Fitzwater wants to speak with me in thegarden. Well be back, okay?

BO: Sure, honey. Go on. Ill turn the nightlight on so you can see.

(The ladies thank him and the camera flashes over to Llanview PDJohnheads into his office and tosses a file on the desk. He sits in his chair and letsout a sigh before rubbing his temples. He opens the file and the viewers seepictures of Llanfairs damage.)

JOHN: You came after my family, Brody. All of those kids could have beenkilled. You and me have a date.

(John angrily snatches his keys off the desk and storms off to the prison cellwhere Brody is. He directs the guard to open the cell door and the sight ofthe bloodstains on the sheet already tells him that something is wrong.Heremoves a pen from his pocket and instructs the stunned guard to get somegloves. A few seconds later, he removes the sheet from Brodys body withthe pen. He lets out a swear as he catches sight of the knife in Brodys

    chest.)

JOHN: Where the hell are my GLOVES?

GUARD: (scurrying over with the gloves in hand) Right here, lieutenant.

JOHN: (quickly putting the gloves on) Who was here tonight?

    GUARD: No one.

JOHN: (annoyed) Well SOMEONE had to be, unless youre saying he did thisto himself?

GUARD: Sir, he didnt make a sound.

JOHN: Do you see those defensive wounds on his hands? And the bruiseacross his knuckles? Start telling me the truth or youre fired.

GUARD: Honestly, lieutenant! He was quiet as a church mouse the wholetime!

JOHN: Did you leave your post at any time tonight?

GUARD: I left on break after my relief arrived.

    JOHN: Who was the relief?

    GUARD: Alan Jacobs.

JOHN: Jacobs. Okay. Get him in here.

(The guard scurries off and John briefly looks at Brodys body, before staringoff into space and running his hand through his hair. The camera flashesover to Llanview Hospital. Robert is sitting in the waiting room, impatiently

awaiting news about Jessica. Nate rushes into the waiting room and hugs hisbrother. Robert winces in pain.)

NATE: Im sorry, Bobby. I forgot, man. Any news on Jess?

FORD: No. These BONEHEAD doctors have been gone for hours!

    NATE: Isnt she in surgery?

FORD: Yes, for three hours now.

NATE: Then they cant stop until they have news for you.

(James arrives at that moment, looking rather flustered and a bit disheveled. His brothers are curious.)

JAMES: (slightly out of breath) Bobby, are you okay?

FORD: Yeah, Im fine. It was Jessica that got hurt. It looks like we should beasking YOU that question! What happened to you?

JAMES: I ran over to Llanfair as soon as the news leaked the story. I saw theambulance leaving and Bree was crying. I knew something had to happen toeither you or Jessica, so I walked here to find you. How is Jess?

FORD: We dont know yet. You said Bree was crying? Oh, boy. Let me callthem and check in on her.

    JAMES: NO!

(Nate and Ford both jump up, startled by his tone.)

JAMES: Im sorry. I meant that shes probably asleep by now. Shes beenthrough enough tonight. Its probably best to let her sleep it off.

(His brothers arent convinced, but they leave it alone for now. Bobby looksdown at James fingers and notice hes nursing his hand.)

NATE: What happened to your hand?

JAMES: I fell in Llanfairs garden and landed on my wrist. Its a bit sore.

NATE: Bummer! Maybe you should see a doctor. You might have sprainedit.

JAMES: Nah, its fine. This happened to me in Dads shop once, rememberBobby?

FORD: Yes, when you tried to do a somersault and landed on your assbecause your wrist didnt cooperate. You needed an ace bandage for twoweeks.

JAMES: Yeah, Dad never let me live it down. Why are these doctors takingso LONG to tell us SOMETHING!

(Ford is alarmed by James behavior.)

FORD: Dude, why are YOU so upset?

  • 7/30/2019 Oltl Fantasy Fiction Script 41

    7/22

JAMES: Why arent you MORE upset?

NATE: Whoa, whoa, whoa! James, thats not fair, man! Bobbys been goingnuts all night. You know how much he loves Jessica! Whats going on with

    you, man?

(Ford studies his brother for a few seconds.)

FORD: I get it. Hes probably thinking about what Starr just went through. Its been a pretty crazy few months here in Llanview. Lets just forget aboutthis and wait on the doctors. Thats all we can do.

NATE: Is that it, James? Aw man, Im sorry. I didnt think. Lets go getsomething from the cafeteria while we wait. You wanna come with us,Bobby?

FORD: Nah, you guys go on. I wanna be here when the doctors get back.

NATE: Okay. Were only a call or a text away. Come on, James.

(They walk away and the camera zooms in slowly on Fords suspiciousexpression as he watches them leave before fading to black.)

(The camera opens up in La BoulaieBlair is relieved to see that Todd hasreturned. She hugs him as best she can with her free arm and they walk intothe family room and sit on the couch.)

BLAIR: Todd, are you okay? I was so worried!

TODD: Im fine. I had to take care of some important business, and it turnedout very well.

  • 7/30/2019 Oltl Fantasy Fiction Script 41

    8/22

BLAIR: Todd, please tell me that you arent involved with something that isgoing to affect us.

TODD: Blair, I made a promise to you that I wouldnt do anything that wouldhurt us. But I also told you that Im a jerk, and more so when it comes to mypeople who hurt my family.

    BLAIR: What did you do?

TODD: I got to the truth about what happened with you and Jack.

BLAIR: What??? You found out who shot me?

    TODD: Yes.

    BLAIR: Who did it?

    TODD: Mayor Finn.

BLAIR: Mayor Finn? Why would she want to shoot me?

TODD: Because she overheard you telling me that Dorian had someinformation that would implicate her in Jacks kidnapping and she panicked.

She mentioned something that had me thinking the whole way back here.

    BLAIR: What was that?

  • 7/30/2019 Oltl Fantasy Fiction Script 41

    9/22

TODD: She said she regretted shooting you instead of holding you hostageand making you tell her what exactly Dorian told you and then find outwhere Dorian got her information from.

BLAIR: I was wondering about that, too, but she did tell me that she got herinformation from a reliable source that she trusted with her life.

TODD: Because whoever it was that your goofy aunt spoke to saved oursons life, and I dont dismiss something like that.

BLAIR: Dorian will never give up that information, Todd. There wassomething about this person that I could see from the look in her eyes she

    holds dear to her heart.

TODD: Okay. Look, I want to spend time with you. I want to get you well sowe can plan our wedding.

    BLAIR: That sounds wonderful.

(Todd hugs her, and the camera zooms in on Todds scheming expressionFlash over to Llanview PD. The forensic team has come into the cell andBrodys body has been claimed by the coroner. John is back in his office, andawaiting the guard to return with the officer he was directed to find. Theguard returns alone, a panicked look on his face.)

JOHN: Where is the officer I asked you to bring to me?

GUARD: Lieutenant, I dont understand whats going on.

JOHN: (expectantly) Let me guessyou went looking all over the precinctand the roster and found out that theres no such person named AveryJacobs working here.

  • 7/30/2019 Oltl Fantasy Fiction Script 41

    10/22

    GUARD: (quietly) Yes.

JOHN: (sighs loudly) You go take a seat in the interrogation room, cause Iam going to need a helluva a statement from you to get to the bottom ofthis. Dont expect any overtime, either.

    GUARD: Yes, sir.

(He speeds out of the office and another officer comes in.)

OFFICER: Boss, that Finn lady needs medical attention. Her skin is all grossand shes screaming Bloody Mary.

JOHN: (in annoyance) Get her to the hospital with full armed guards and inhandcuffs. Dont take your eyes off of that sea witch.

    OFFICER: Yes, sir.

(The officer leaves and John lets out a frustrated breath as the camerazooms in and fades out. Flash back to Victor and Tas housethe doorbellrings and Victor races to answer it. He is pleasantly surprised to see Starrand frowns at Cole.)

VICTOR: Hello, Starr! (He hugs her and plants a kiss on the top of herhead.) Cole.

    COLE: Mr. Lord.

STARR: Uncle Victor, have you heard from my dad?

  • 7/30/2019 Oltl Fantasy Fiction Script 41

    11/22

VICTOR: Yes, we just had coffee at the diner a half hour ago. Why?

STARR: Well, why isnt he picking up his phone? I left a gazillion messages!

    VICTOR: Is something wrong?

STARR: No, not really. Its just that Hope has been asking for him all nightand she wont sleep without him. I need him to satisfy her need to see himso shell sleep!

VICTOR: I think hes at La Boulaie with Blair.

STARR: Duh! That makes all the sense in the world. Ill go over there. Thankyou. I love you.

    VICTOR: Love you too.

(Flash forward to La BoulaieBlair and Todd are kissing when the doorbellrings. Todd reluctantly, and irritatedly pulls away from Blair and heads overto the door.)

TODD: (shouting loudly en route to the front door) If youre a salesman, aJehovahs witness or a cop, be warned that I have sharp-toothed dogs whohates visitors!

(He opens the door to see Starr and Cole. Both teens are giggling at whatTodd said.)

TODD: Shorty!!! What a pleasant surwait a minute. Its late. Whats thematter?

  • 7/30/2019 Oltl Fantasy Fiction Script 41

    12/22

STARR: Nothing major, Dad. Your granddaughter is having a fit. She hasbeen demanding to see you all might and refuses to sleep without seeingyou and getting her reptile bedtime story. I tried, Cole tried, Markko andLangston tried, but we arent her Paw-Pa. Can you drop by for just a fewminutes and help?

TODD: Sure thing, Shorty. Just let me run it by your mother. BLAIR!

BLAIR: (gets up and is on her way to join him in the hall) Todd, stopshouting! Im not in Timbuktu! What is it, whats going on? Who was at the STARR? Honey, whats wrong? Are you okay? Did something happen?

STARR: Mom, Mom, MOM! Calm down! Im fine. Its just that Hope isdetermined not to go to sleep until she sees Dad. I came over to ask him todrop by and just show his face so Hope will sleep.

TODD: Will you be alright for an hour or so?

BLAIR: Only if you come back to me.

TODD: You cant stake your life on that.

(He kisses Blair intensely and heads out the door. The camera follows themto Starrs apartment and we hear Hopes yelling tantrum through the closeddoor. Starr quickly unlocks her door and hurries Todd inside.)

LANGSTON: Hope, sweetie, Mommy is coming right back! Please calmdown?

    HOPE: Want PAW-PA! PAW-PA!

LANGSTON: I know, honey. Mommy went to get him

    13/22

STARR: Langston, were back. Hi, honey! Paw-pas here, see? You can stopcrying now.

(Hope extends her arms impatiently to Todd, who smiles brightly as he takesher from Langston. She immediately settles down and nestles against hischest with a thumb in her mouth.)

TODD: Hey there, Little Shortywhats all the fuss about? You giving allthese people a hard time, hm? Whats all the fuss about?

(Hope leans up and points to a stuffed iguana. Todd chuckles and takes theiguana into the room. He returns almost in a flash without Hope, and there isno noise.)

STARR: What did you do, punch her out?

TODD: No, I put her in her crib and started telling her the story, but shelasted all of two minutes and fell out.

STARR: Oh MAN do I feel like a failure right now!

TODD: She was already tired, Starr. She might have been asleep already ifwe had arrived fifteen minutes later. Then againif she was looking for meNAH!!! Only the real thing would have worked.

STARR: (chuckling as her text alert goes off) Oh, Dad! (she looks at herphone and smiles.) Aww!!

TODD: That sounds all mushy and stuff.

  • 7/30/2019 Oltl Fantasy Fiction Script 41

    14/22

STARR: I just got a message from the daughter of Aunt Dorians friend.Shes a big fan of mine, and I promised her father I would help his daughterlive her dream as a thank you for being Aunt Dorians friend.

TODD: Really? Um, Starr? Can I talk to you in private for a minute?

STARR: (Suspicious of her fathers devious look) Uh-oh! Whats up, Dad?

(Todd gives her a shrug of his shoulders with the cat-ate-the-canaryexpression, and the camera fades to black)

(Flash back to Nora and Fitzwater in the Buchanan gardenBo has broughtboth ladies tea and slipped back into the house to allow them their privacy.Judge Fitzwater sips her tea carefully then sets it down to turn to Nora.)

FITZWATER: Nora, Iwhat happened to you and the Commissioner touchedme personally because of what I stated earlier, but also because I recognizethe impending destruction in your actions, and I want to reach out to you asa friend before you let it fester.

NORA: Im sorry, Your Honor, but I am confused.

FITZWATER: It will all come together by the end of my visit. And for thismeeting, you can call me Barbara.

    NORA: Ok(awkwardly) Barbara.

FITZWATER: (chuckling) Youll get used to it. Kathleen Finn and I go back along way. She and I were in the same law school, and she always had a built-in resentmentor better yet, an outright HATRED for me because she wasntselected for the senior position in her brothers law firm.

NORA: What?? Which partner is she related to?

  • 7/30/2019 Oltl Fantasy Fiction Script 41

    15/22

FITZWATER: Gary Shanks. Shes the eldest of the three Shanks children. She made her hatred for me known at the legal seminar. I turned my back onher, and it was the one thing in my life I regret the most.

(Nora is touched by the deeply pained look on the judges face, and shereaches out to cover Fitzwaters hand with her own.)

    NORA: Are you okay?

FITZWATER: I will be after I get this out. The day I was being honored for

becoming a judge, my son Michael arrived a few minutes after my limo did. Iwas on my way up the stairs and he called out to me. I turned to see himstanding in front of his car. He smiled and waved, and at that precisemoment, a car pulled up, a masked man came out and shot my boy pointblank in the chest. Then the man turned to pull off his mask and smile at mebefore getting back into the car and speeding away.

NORA: Dear God! Im so sorry, Your Ho..um, Barbara! I cant imaginewell,Bo and I experienced that grief for a whole day when Kathleen and Troyshowed us a video hoax of Matthew being shot at by a sniper.

BARBARA: The thing isthere was something eerily familiar about himsomething I thought was explained when Lieutenant McBain revealed hisidentity to get the search warrant. But there was still a nagging feeling, and Irealized that he was familiar to me long before I was ever married..longbefore Michael.

(Nora squeezes Fitzwaters hand to comfort her as she pauses to fight back

impending tears. Barbara manages to give her a crooked smile and patsNoras hand in gratitude.)

BARBARA: One night, I was working late at the firm. Mr. Shanks had askedme to review the opening statement of a murder case he was going todefendhe left to make a night deposit and asked me to lock up. I called my

fianc at the time, Michael, Sr., and told him I would need him to pick me upwhen I was finished. I was safe, or so I believed, because the doors werelocked and we were closed for the night. I went upstairs to the library toresearch a case and there was a man, in a mask, waiting for me in the office. He charged at me and I defended myself, managing to lift the bottom part of

his mask to reveal his mouth. He smiled at me, and somehow subdued me. Inever saw his face as he raped me, but I remembered that smile. It wasntmuch for the police to go on back then, and the case lost to statute oflimitations. I put it out of my mind for yearsso long that I almost forgot theonly piece of identification my mind had of my assailant.

(She pauses, and takes in Noras mixed expression.)

BARBARA: It wasnt until after Kathleen was arrested and I found out thather little brother Carl was my sons killer that all of the memories of thatnight came back so vividly in my dreams. Especially that evil smile. Then itall made perfect sense.

NORA: I..I..dont know what to say

FITZWATER: No, NoralistenI shared that with you so that I can get to thereason for my visit.

    NORA: Oh, okay.

FITZWATER: After my attack, I pushed away from Michael. I blamed myselffor being too stupid and too weak to stop the incident. I felt beneath him,and he did everything he could to show me that he knew without any doubtthat I was a victim and he loved me just as much as ever. He refused toleave my side, but I didnt make it easy for himI let that piece of garbage inand he almost took the only thing that meant anything at all to me in this

    world after God.

NORA: I almost had that happen, Barbara, but we talked about it.

  • 7/30/2019 Oltl Fantasy Fiction Script 41

    17/22

FITZWATER: (taking Noras face between her hands and leaning closer toher) No you havent. I saw the great effort you took in avoiding looking atyour husband the minute I walked in. But I was prompted to visit you basedon the talk I heard about how you and Bo avoided each other after beingrescued from Kathleen and MacIver. DONT let them take even one precious

millisecond away from you and your husband. Not even a milli-second! Ifthey even detect a small crack, theyll get in and destroy everything.

(Noras eyes fill with tears and they fall freely from the corners of her eyes.Fitzwater stands up to hug Nora, rocking her back and forth until she calmsdown.)

NORA: (hoarsely) How did you get through it?

BARBARA: Fortunately for me, watching Michael pack and head for the doorwhen he realized I was never gonna let him in was my jolt back to reality. The idea of losing him for good was more powerful than wallowing in thevictims pool.

(She stands up and puts her hands on Noras shoulders.)

BARBARA: I have to go, my dear, but remember what I said.

NORA: I will, BarbaraI certainly will. My God, thank you so much.

BARBARA: No problem at all. Im glad that tumor of a woman has beenstopped and my tragedy can be put to use for the good of someone else.

(The ladies hug one more time and Bo offers to drive her home. Flash over tothe house of Fernando Saldeba. Fernando and his wife live in a smallapartment that is falling apart. He stopshis work on a leaky pipe when hehears a knock on his apartment. He opens the door and stops short in frightas he faces Todd.)

FERNANDO: Well, I thank Dios in heaven for that. Come in, Mr. Manning.(Todd steps inside and smiles at Mrs. Saldeban.) What can I do for you,Seor Manning?

TODD: You saved my sons life, and I want to say thank you. So, I have twothings for you.

(Before he can say anything else, he hears singing from another room andhe stops to enjoy the sound. He recognizes the song that the girl is singingas one of Starrs tunes. Gloria Saldeban joins her husband, and he embracesher protectively as they watch Todds smiling face skeptically.)

TODD: WOW! Shes amazing! Is that the famous Estrella that my daughtercant stop talking about?

TODD: Can you please ask Estrella to come out here, please?

    GLORIA: Estrella?

    ESTRELLA: (from offscreen) Si, Mam?

GLORIA: Can you come here, por favor?

(Estrella comes out from her bedroom, with headphones draped across herneck and a music player in her hand. She recognizes Todd, and is curious. She moves to her parents. She returns Todds smile nervously.)

TODD: Estrella, you have a beautiful voice.

ESTRELLA: Thank you, seorbut YOUR Estrellas voice is so much morebeautiful.

TODD: My daughter tells me that you are her fan. She also tells me that shehas been helping you touch up on your vocal exercises.

ESTRELLA: Yes, seor. She is a very wonderful lady.

TODD: Yes, she is. Well, I asked your parents to call you out here so I cantell you this in person. Your father saved my sons life, and I want to thankyou all. First, YOU, Estrella, are going to be signed as an artist with ManningProductions, a new record label that I started for Starr and you are going tobe her exclusive opening act for three cities on her next tour.

(The Saldebans shriek with excitement and Todd smiles as he covers hisears. Fernando calms the ladies down and turns back to Todd.)

FERNANDO: Please forgive us, Seor! But this is a very special surprise! Shehas wanted to do this since she could walk!

TODD: Well, theres one more thing.

FERNANDO: Oh, seor, you have done so much already!

(Todd pulls out a check from his pocket and hands it to Fernando, whohesitantly accepts it, never taking his shocked expression off of Todds face.

He slowly drops his gaze and looks down at the check, as does Gloria. Theyboth burst into tears and Gloria puts a hand over her mouth.)

    ESTRELLA: What is it, padres?

family. If you need anything, please do not hesitate to ask.
