mar Rayo was a painter, caricaturist, engraver and designer that was born in Roldanillo, Valle del Cauca in January 20, 1928. He studied drawing for correspondence in academy of Buenos Aires. In 1947, he decided to live in Cali and survive like caricaturist and illustrator in some newspapers and magazines. In 1953 Rayo rejects a grant of the School of San Jeronimo of Madrid, and decides to travel to some countries of South America where he had the opportunity to learn techniques and trends like apprentice in the workshops of renowned painters. Also he knew techniques of Amazon Indians like pigments and dyes that were inspired for Pre Columbian art of Mayas and Incas where it came his artistic trend about geometric art.In later years he won others grants that contributed to his training; in the 70s and 80s he made the most important artistic works of his career with a particular technique of engraving called the Intaglios,that consist in relief engravings with papper and copper. The result is an illusory play of lines without beginning or end, a geometric maze of three-dimensional mock performed sometimes on black and white and other bright colors. The idea of building a museum in Roldanillo arose in 1972 when the citizenry and local government paid tribute to the master Omar RayoIn 1972 arose the idea of building a museum in Roldanillo, to paid tribute to the master Omar Rayo. In 1981 opened in his hometown Rayo Museum of Latin American Art and Engraving.In the early hours of June 7, 2010, Rayo collapsed while having breakfast at his Roldanillo residence. He died on the way to a hospital in Cali, Colombia, after having suffered a heart attack.
