AND TECHNIQUES

Do you still have quilt tops that are daunting because they are large and you want to quilt them on your home machine? Or maybe you’re about to start a full size quilt project.

Julie Yandura, a local quilter, has a lot of experience tackling larger projects and making them more manageable by quilting them in sections before assembling the entire quilt. She will give practical advice on how to divide up the quilt top and give tips and techniques for how to quilt, then assemble the entire quilt.

Please bring quilt patterns you’re interested in doing or are working on, copied in 8-1/2” x 11” format, and she will show everyone how to think about dividing up quilts using this technique. You can also bring those quilt tops in for tips on how they could be assembled and quilted using her technique.

At 5:00 we will be having dinner at Casa Mariachi in Parker with Julie Yandura. Everyone is welcome.

This Year’s Project

Collage Quilts

Instead of bi-monthly challenges in 2019, we are going to kick off a bi-monthly project in the form of a Mystery Quilt. As you receive instructions every other month, you will have a clear pattern to follow. After the presentation in February, those interested in the project can stay and get instructions, fabric requirements, and the first block to put together. Or you can choose fabric as you go, making your project more scrappy. In March we will take time to look at your chosen fabrics and give you feedback (since you haven’t seen the pattern). With the handout of some of the patterns we will have demos to explore new or fast techniques.

There was a large response to having a mystery quilt this year, so get ready...

At January’s meeting, Jacqui Snow showedsome of her lovely collage quilts, a techniquemade famous by quilt designer, Laura Heine.

Because of a lot interest in Jacqui’s quilts,we are planning to arrange an upcomingprogram on collage quilts, an overviewon how they are made, with the goal ofhaving a class on this technique at a latertime.

Please stay tuned for more info!

To see more of Jacqui’s collage quilts, see the Show and Tell pages at the endof the newsletter.

Web Wanderings by Ethel Swartley

Thom Atkins Beadwork, Quilts and Sculpture http://www.thomatkins.com

As I was wandering the quilt web this month, everything I was finding seemed to look like something I’d reviewed before. Then in in search of beaded quilts, I stumbled across Thom Atkins’ website. Thom started out as a sculptor, working in bronze, and you will surely want to see his tongue-in-cheek section entitled “Guys with Balls.” Don’t worry; they are nudes, but they are not X-rated. Late in life, Thom switched his focus from bronze sculpture to beading, inspired by his sister Robin Atkins, who has a wonderful beading website of her own. Since then, Thom has created intricate quilts that he calls “beaded tapestries”, including a bright red one called “Colorado Sunset.” Descriptions of his intricate work cannot do it justice, so I encourage you to check out his website and photos. With his intense beadwork, I’m sure the photos do not do justice either, but Thom has shared them so that we who are not lucky enough to see his work in person can still be awed by it.
