Welcometoourfinaleditionof On the Move for 2012. In this edition of our member magazine, we have a focus on the impact arthritis can have on children.

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis or (JIA) as it is often referred to, affects one in every thousand children. There is no known cause and often no apparent link to a family history of the condition. Arthritis SA is determined to support not only the children but also the families of children who suffer from arthritis. With this in mind, a JIA resource bag is being developed that will be distributed to newly diagnosed children with arthritis attending the rheumatology clinic at the Womens and Childrens Hospital. The bag contains useful information for both parents and children and most importantly, how to tap into support because Kids Get Arthritis Too!.

In March next year we will be holding a family picnic for families of children withJIA.Thepicnicwillbeafunfilledexperience for the children but also a great opportunity for parents to talk to other families of children affected by Arthritis. If you would like to book into

this please contact Arthritis SA on (08) 83795711.

I was privileged to join six other South Australians recently on the fundraising Great Wall of China adventure. In total, over $31,000 was raised by these amazing people. The climbing of the wall was one of the most challenging but best things I have ever done. Each day we focused on why we were doing the walk and our hardest day was devoted to people with arthritis. Next year a group of people will be offered the opportunity to travel to Borneo to meet the amazing orangatans. If you or someone you know is interested in this life changing experience please contact us at Arthritis SA or visit the website. It truly is a wonderful experience knowing that all funds you raise go to supporting local arthritis research in South Australia.

Arthritis SA is introducing some new and exciting programs. Each programisquitespecificandrunsfor two weeks with participants attending for 2.5hours.The Take Charge of Life programs will provide

participants with some excellent self-management tools to assist with their condition. Please visit our website for further information.

As we near the end of 2012 I am delighted to say we have a very full program for 2013. A major focus will be on introducing online education programs and webinars to particularly support country people or for those people who are less mobile. Our new website has information on all of our activities and the support we can provide.

Finally a big thank you to all our supporters, volunteers, members and staff. i hope you and your loved ones have a very Merry Christmas and a safe, happy and healthy 2013.

if you would like to support our ongoing work at Christmas and in particular our Kids Get Arthritis too campaign please visit our new website www.arthritissa.org.au or ring (08) 8379 5711.

I am delighted to have been elected as the new President of Arthritis SA. At the 37th annual general meeting of Arthritis SA, the members re-elected Anne Young, Denis Wall and myself onto the board for a further three years.

As a person who has lived with arthritis since my late teens, I knowfirst-handtheimportanceofconsumer support, information and advocacy that Arthritis SA staff, volunteers and the board are totally committed to.

I am inspired by the new strategies Arthritis SA now has in place to ensure that even more people with arthritis have access to our services.

Three new programs have now been introduced under the Take Charge of Life Programs and in particular will focus on strategies to deal with pain, inflammatoryarthritisandosteoarthritis. I would encourage

anyone suffering with these conditions to consider booking in to one of the courses.

Our new website is much easier to navigate and contains a wide range of very useful information. Please visit it at www.arthritissa.org.au.

A major focus in the future of education and consumer programs at Arthritis SA is to embrace technology so that we can support even more people.Wewillholdourfirstwebinarpresentation for health professionals on gout in January and online programs will be rolled out early next year. Our monthly e-newsletter has grown to close to 1,000 people receiving it every month. This has become an important but simple means of communicating important information on arthritis to a wide number of people.

Members remain extremely important tousandhavemanybenefitssoplease consider renewing or joining Arthritis SA today, as together we really can make a difference.

Arthritis SA remains committed to the one in four people with Arthritis in South Australia and it is only through the generous donations of our members and people in the community that we can achieve so much. In the coming year Arthritis SA will commit over $200,000 to research both at a local and national level.

I ask you today to consider supporting our Juvenile Arthritis appeal as we raise money to support the large number of children who

are affected by JIA. Our goal is to provide a resource for every newly diagnosed family, providing information and assistance to families through their arthritis journey. Please join me in making a donation to our children who may be affected with arthritis not only today but also in the future.

We will be closed from Friday december 21st until Monday January 7th 2013.

    our new

    happy holidays

Juvenile idiopathic Arthritis or JiA - generally known as juvenile arthritis refers to all types of arthritis that affect young people less than 16 years of age. JiA is one of the most common, as well as serious, persistent medical conditions of childhood.

More girls than boys have juvenile arthritis and it is rare for more than one child in any family to be affected.

While some forms of JiA appear to be similar to some forms of adult arthritis, how JiA develops, parts of the body affected and the way in which it is treated can be quite different.

Juvenile arthritis was first diagnosed more than 100 years ago and, while a cure is yet to be found, there are now many successful approaches to treating and managing JiA.

even though its not possible to tell how long juvenile arthritis will last, its severity or how often it might swing between being almost symptom-free to quite disabling, the good news is that many children or adolescents with JiA do not develop lasting complications.

Some instances of JiA last a few months, others years.

one child in every 1000 in australia is diagnosed with juvenile arthritisLiving with juvenile arthritis can be challenging not only for the child or young person with JiA, but for their family and friends.
