Lee Wiltshire Trophy — 2009 Award I am delighted to be able to announce that the Lee Wiltshire Trophy for the Clubman of the year has been awarded for 2009 to Scott Gresham. Scott "many hats" Gresham has put in an incredible amount of work for the club in the past year. On top of all the work he does as merchandise and gear co-ordinator, his is the Vice President of Administration for the Club, working on all non-football aspects of running the club. He has co-ordinated and worked tirelessly on the refurbishment of the clubhouse. He's also scored a few goals for his beloved Scars Over 35 team!!

KDSA O35 CUP ROUND UP In the KDSA 035 Cup competition the club entered a record four teams. All made it to the second round, where the D team (WPFC Div 3 team) met the A team (ie WPFC Div 1) and were eliminated. The C team (ie the ‘Crusaders’, WPFC Div 2 squad) fought hard to beat St Ives 1–0 in round one, but had a more comfortable 3–1 win against Mt Colah in round two. WPFC B team (Div 1 Reserves) had a big win in round one against Prouille, then played brilliantly to beat Wahroonga in round two. Coming back to level the game at 2-all shortly before full-time, the B team took the game to extra time – where they won with a golden goal. This left three WPFC teams in the last four. The A team cruised to a two nil win against North Sydney, while WPFC B and the WPFC Crusaders fought out a great match at Parklands for the other place in the final —the B team coming from behind to win 2–1. The date for the all WPFC final is yet to be announced: but don’t miss it!

A message from the KDSA

There have been some complaints about the amount of littering occurring at Mimosa and Norman Griffiths during the soccer season. Could all players, managers, coaches, parents and supporters please pick up any litter and ensure the grounds are free of rubbish and left tidy after use.

Parents' rage can make children give up sport Adele Horin (July 22, 2009)

Children hate loud, aggressive, sideline mothers and fathers Children are appalled and frightened when their parents behave aggressively on the sidelines of junior sports events, and bad adult behaviour is a major reason they drop out of sport, in-depth interviews with 90 children show. Following the horrific beating of a parent on the sidelines of an under-12s rugby league match at the weekend, a University of NSW researcher, Clifton Evers, wants parents to know that children hate loud, aggressive, sideline mothers and fathers. After interviews with the children aged 10 to 16, Dr Evers, a postdoctoral research fellow, said he was surprised at how readily the youngsters recalled events from even three to five years previously that had alarmed them. "Parents yelling at parents, parents yelling at officials … Young kids view all aggressiveness as violence," he said. An 11-year-old boy told him, "The loud ones scare me. They're so big, too. Sometimes I think their head will explode. "My dad is bad and I get worried. He punched someone near the car once." A 12-year old boy said he had stopped playing sport after parents from an opposing team pushed his mother hard. And a 12-year-old girl said, "You're not allowed to have fun, especially when everyone is yelling and angry." US research shows many parents feel passing anger as a game unfolds, usually because of referee decisions or mistakes made by their child's team. But only a certain personality type exploded into sideline rage - the same personality type that was quick to anger when driving. A University of Maryland researcher, Jay Goldstein, said, "When they perceived something that happened during the game to be personally directed at them or their child, they got angry. That's consistent with findings on road rage." The executive director of the Parenting Research Centre in Melbourne, Warren Cann, said it was hard for all parents to see their children being treated unfairly on the field, or hurt. But the explosive parents were those who tended to exaggerate the threat and to see things in black and white. "They don't see the umpire as having made a human mistake but as biased. Just as on the road, they don't see a driver who cuts in front as having made a mistake but as doing it deliberately." Louise Newman, professor of developmental psychiatry at Monash University, said some parents over-invested in their children's achievements - sporting and academic - putting them under huge pressure. At the same time, they thought their children could do no wrong and lashed out if onfield decisions went against them. "It's sad. In a perverse way they're trying to protect their child, defend their child at all costs, but the aggressive, angry ones go too far." Dr Evers reminded parents that most children, especially until about age 14, played sport for fun. It was parents who thought sport was about competing and winning.

West Pymble Koalas: Round 11 Mimosa Park: an undermanned West Pymble took on a full strength Lindfield. The opposition rattled the back of the net early on before West Pymble got into gear with some excellent tackling by Lucas Andrews (8) in defense. Lachlan Fisher (2) and Charlie Weber (12) combined well up front for 2 near misses from Lachlan. Lindfield controlled and passed the ball well making Cameron Fraser (4) and Lucas Andrews (8) the real work horses in the mid-field in defense. West Pymble successfully repelled each attack with Kenzi Southwell (5) providing some great goal kicks to set up plenty of opportunities up field. While some great pressure from Lachlan Fisher (2) mid way through the half saw him steal the ball and kick a great goal to level the scores. However, Lindfield soon after they caught the boys napping with 3 quick goals going into half time sermon: Half Time: West Pymble 1 v Lindfield 4. Whilst the boys were a little shell shocked at half time, there was plenty of good tackling and attacking down field. There were a number of good shots on goal resulting in near misses. The instructions for the second half were to mark up the Lindfield players, look to call and pass ball, and to have fun. “Keep focus and the goals would come…” Although Lindfield scored twice early on to stretch the lead to 6-1, the boys did not drop off… in fact their hunger for the ball increased as they were now running towards the BBQ end of the pitch; directly into the wafting smells of the sausage sizzle. Charlie Weber (12) responded to the call of the BBQ with a hot sausage sizzling shot from about 20 metres out. The resulting goal lifted West Pymble and Lachlan Fisher (2) scored soon after to make it respectable 2-2 in the second half. Full Time: West Pymble 3 v Lindfield 6 Throughout the game Lachlan shot and missed a couple of times in each half. Lucas Andrews (8) and Cameron Fraser (4) both played excellent games in the midfield in defense with Cameron playing a pivotal role marking the Lindfield players. As usual, Kenzi Southwell (5) provided the last line of defense with plenty of big goal kicks as the sweeper. Nonetheless, the Player of the Week award went to Charlie Weber (12) for plenty of running in attack and defense. Charlie’s field positioning worked very well today and he kicked a great goal to life the lads in the 2nd half. A great effort Charlie!

"And with 4 minutes gone,

the score is already 0-0."

POSITIVELY PINK JUNIOR GIRLS’ GALA DAY 2009

Sunday 30 Aug 2009

We have a very special Girls Gala Day this year where we will be raising funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). We want to encourage support at all levels, including clubs, teams and individuals. The KDSA are leading by example by making a $1000 donation to the NBCF to kick-off the fundraising drive. One of the main fundraising activities will be that players (or their parents) will be asked to purchase pink socks and wear the pink socks on the day. In addition, Clubs can purchase match balls for each team sporting the NBCF logo and donating them to teams to sign and raffle off at the completion of their games as another means of raising funds. Clubs that field teams in the girls U8-U18 competitions will be taking part. We want to encourage maximum participation in the day which will be a fun day for the players as well as raising awareness and funds for the NBCF. The referees (KDFRA) will be making a contribution and wearing pink shirts on the day. Teams will be encouraged to wear and purchase as much pink as they can (Pink hair bands/pink ribbons/pink hairspray etc will be on sale on the day) with prizes being awarded. Dr. Lucy Blunt, mother of two children who play in the KDSA has written a book dealing with her experiences with Breast Cancer. The book is intended for parents with young children who wish to educate them about what can be a difficult topic. This book is available at www.janecurrypublishing.com.au/files/My_Mums_Got_Cancer_PR.pdf with the sale proceeds from RRP ($19.95) going to the NBCF. There will be approximately 118 teams and 1600 players taking part in the Positively Pink KDSA Girls Gala Day. We look forward to your support to ensure the day is a success and great fun for all those involved.

WEST PYMBLE SHINE UNDER CLOUDY SKIES 30 May 2009 — Berowra U11B v West Pymble U11C

The soggy state of most grounds and rain the night before had team members and associates fully expecting a last minute notice declaring ‘all grounds closed’. Instead an early morning gathering at WPPS for team photos revealed a cool but drying breeze and the news that the games were on. A quick dash up the F3 to Mt Colah saw the team with plenty of time to warm up and get to know their positions. Any thoughts we may have had of the girl heavy mixed Berowra team being a pushover were soon dispelled when they showed plenty of running in the first few minutes. Still, whenever the ball rolled our way Jack Bird was able to organise our front line by calling strongly and confidently and it wasn’t long before we won 2 quick corners. A bold attack by Berowra was fended off by Garion Johnstone who was determined to chase down every loose ball. Not to be outdone in the eagerness stakes Lachlan Stuart and Sean Carmichael collided while competing for the ball, the resulting pass going to a running Mitchell Hargreaves who scored goal number one. Berowra were straight into the offensive from the kick off and despite Samuel Glore’s gutsy display of traditional dribbling skills WP were lucky the inevitable shot on goal went right side wide. Green shirt wearing Jack Colley was on a steep goalkeeping learning curve. His goal throws were complemented by the excellent forward passing of Adam Nestel.

Half Time Score: Berowra 0 – West Pymble 1 Nicholas Whitehouse took over the green shirt in goal for the second half. A long pass was picked up by Garion Johnstone who had it in the back of the net within a minute of kick off. Berowra resorted to defending by kicking the ball out but this only allowed Samuel Glore to demonstrate his excellent throw in skills one of which landed just right for a long loping Jack Colley pass back allowing him to slip it in the net. Then it was Berowra’s turn to benefit from a fast move. A near corner throw was taken quickly while some WP players committed the cardinal sin of turning their backs to the ball. A scramble in front of the net ensued and Berowra scored. But that was to be their only highlight. Our back line seemed to solidify after that with the seemingly tireless Kevin Hwang able to block attacks on either wing. He stopped the opposition in their tracks, giving the ball to Adam Nestel whose shot was just wide. The resulting goal kick was picked up by Benjamin Howes, selflessly passing it on to Jack Colley who took his chance and was rewarded with our fourth goal. Mitchell Hargreaves met the kick off with a blinder of a shot from way back. Still, not to be outdone and in a display of strikers fever Jack Colley thought he’d have another go. An arrow straight pass from Matthew McLeod allowed him to be rewarded with his second and WP’s fifth just one minute before the ref called time.

Final Score: Berowra 1 — West Pymble 5 Match Award: Jack Colley

ASK GUS…

Do you have football question you just can’t answer? Does the offside rule still leave you confused?

Are match reports an enigma? Just ask Gus…

“Why do football ages keep getting older (i.e. Over 45s) but lawn bowlers are getting younger (i.e. Scotland and Chick)?”

Oh dear, what a confused question. It is rather like asking “Why have supermarkets started selling CDs, yet eggs are getting cheaper?” Having a good idea who the inquisitor is I will have a stab at guessing at what he really means, but first a bit of background. This is the first year that WPFC have entered a team in the men’s Over 45 competition. Scotland and Chick are members of the West Pymble Bowling club, in the 45–54 age bracket, both of whom used to play football. So what I think our semantically‐challenged questioner means is “Why do footballers seem to be getting older, yet bowlers seem to be getting younger?” The question is based on a misconception that football is a young person’s game and bowls is an old person’s game, and whilst this might be true around West Pymble it is not true in the wider world. One of the world’s most famous footballers, Sir Stanley Matthews, was still playing in the top flight in England at the age of 50 and finally retired at 55. On the other hand, Sunshine Coast schoolgirl Kelsey Cottrell, aged 15 years, became the youngest lawn bowler ever to represent Australia in 2005 There is a place for both bowls and football in Australian sporting life, whatever one’s age. In fact there are sufficient similarities for a smooth transition to be made from one to the other. Both involve chasing up and down a patch of green after a small white ball. One sport uses asymmetrical balls, while some players of the other sport have asymmetrical balls. In one sport, many players use shin pads, while in the other, many use incontinence pads (so my sources tell me). Both sports claim to provide health benefits, including improved fitness, improved coordination and skill development, increased confidence and self‐esteem, enhanced mental wellbeing and social intercourse. And what about this for advice before playing? • See your doctor for a check‐up if you have a medical condition, are overweight, are over 40 years old or haven’t

exercised regularly. • Warm up and stretch before play to improve joint range of motion, promote elasticity of tendons and ligaments,

and prevent muscular strain. • Cool down after play to prevent stiffness and cardiovascular complications. It is advice given to bowlers but could, and should equally apply to footballers. There is evidence of cross‐fertilisation of ideas between the two sports. In 1986, Englishman Tony Allcock won the world title with his now‐famous “snake shot”, which incorporated three instances of reverse bias in one shot, inspired he said by the mazy run and goal by Argentinian Diego Maradona in the world cup match against England. In the 70s, England Football Manager Don Revie, regularly included indoor bowls at England get‐togethers to improve team spirit. David Beckham gained inspiration for his bendy free kicks from youthful hours spent watching his father trace languid parabolae bowling with his Drakes Pride Professionals. The bottom line is, it doesn’t matter whether you are young or old, there is a place for you to get out in the fresh air and enjoy your sport, be it football or bowls, at West Pymble.

Until next time, enjoy your football at WPFC and remember... Ask Gus. Gus knows.

I am delighted to announce the launch of the KDSA Mongo Football Program, an exciting long-term player development initiative. Aimed at kids from U6/7 – U12, the objective is to provide the highest quality of coaching for players within our district. Only by providing quality programs for kids at an early age can we hope to develop tomorrow’s talent. Full details about the program are on the mongofootball.com website.

To all the old and new players to the club, this is a reminder email to advise that the club has full use of the West Pymble Bowling Club after our Saturday and Sunday afternoon games. We have re-introduced the Players Player Mugs and Champagne glasses this season, so it would be great to see you all down at the Bowlo after the 3pm games are finished. To the new players, the post game session is very much a family affair, dinner and drinks available, cook your own BBQ if you like, or order from kitchen. There is an informal Match Review from each of the captains of all the Divisions. At the end of the season the Players’ Player mug for each division is inscribed with the Player of the Year Award. In previous years we have had in excess of 140+ players, wives, husbands, and kids to tell our war stories to, so let’s get it back to those numbers of years past.

Hope to see you all there in future Saturdays and Sundays
