Dear Parents and Carers, We are all struck with the events which occurred last week in Barcelona. The intent of the perpetrators was clear. It seems that evil had taken hold of them. We are challenged when we see evil in the world, especially when there is loss of life of the very young and innocent. May we keep the family of Julian Cadman the little boy who lost his life in this tragedy in our prayers and thoughts at this extremely difficult time. May they always remember the smile he brought to the faces of his family. May we also pray for peace in our world. Want to give your children a gift that will last a lifetime? Then, encourage them to read for pleasure. Those who read for pleasure have active imaginations and enjoy learning; indeed, reading is a gift that will last forever: I can’t get around much anymore. When I go somewhere, I have to go in a wheelchair. But when I read, I can go anywhere, anytime I want. And no one has to help me.” Mavis Gleeson. 98 years old! Reading is the avenue through which children learn just about everything; it is reading that will broaden children’s horizons and take them into new and exciting worlds that are paved with endless wonder and imagination. Reading is an interactive activity, for when children read they are involved with the book, imagining the characters and scenes and painting images in their minds which enable them to be creative and to think for themselves. Of course, there are academic benefits as reading allows children to see words in different contexts which can assist comprehension, the correct use of grammar and correct sentence structure. The more children see how a word is used, the more likely they are to use the word correctly in their own vocabulary. Seeing words spelt correctly will help children to be more correct with their spelling. Likewise, writing skills will benefit by reading well- formed sentences and observing how paragraphs link together. There is evidence to suggest that children who read for pleasure will perform well in written exams, because they are likely to understand the phrasing of the questions and be able to write their answers with clarity. In addition to academic learning, reading offers a wide range of life skills as children learn about the world around them. Although reading is mostly a solitary activity, it encourages an understanding of how people relate to each other as the book characters form relationships and deal with questions of morals, friendship, love and family. Also, reading can help cope with stress and anxiety as it provides a form of relaxation and escapism. Way back in 1700 the poet and dramatist, Joseph Addison, wrote; “Reading is a basic tool in the living of a good life.” More recently, Marla Herrick gave us this insight: “I’ve travelled the world twice over, met the famous – saints and sinners, poets and artists, old stars and hopeful beginners. I’ve been to places of great wonder, beauty as well as terror. I’ve learned secrets from writers and cooks and all with one library card that gives me access to the wonderful world of books.” How true is the statement of each of these people! So, do you want to give your child a gift that will last a lifetime? Then, maybe Book Week is a great time to start or perhaps, restart. Dear Parents and Carers,

We are all struck with the events which occurred last week in Barcelona. WALKING THE WAY – CSO INITIATIVE FOR PARENTS AND SCHOOL COMMUNITIES

Dear Parents,

Pope Francis speaks often about accompanying one another on life’s journey amidst all its joys and struggles, as we place our trust in our loving God. To ‘walk with’ another is a precious gift and a noble task. Here at Prouille Catholic School this is especially true of you as parents as you walk with your children in faith, hope and love. In 2017, the Catholic Schools Office is offering all parents in schools of the Diocese of Broken Bay an opportunity to enter an initiative called Walking the Way. In four steps it offers the following:

1. A booklet of inspiration and practical ideas 2. A weekly e-Bulletin with faith-tips for the home 3. Local parent reflections to nourish the spirituality of parents 4. An annual retreat day

Walking the Way is being rolled out across our Diocese during 2017 and we will keep you informed as to its commencement in our own school community (Term 4). In the meantime, for more information you can visit walkingtheway.dbbcso.org.

Thank you to Katie Fullilove (Mum to Jack in 1E) for sending through this fabulous link entitled "The Mirror" -

NETBALL NEWS It's finals time in the Kuringai Netball competition and the Prouille teams - playing as Water Street, have had great seasons.

A huge congratulations to our Year 6 and Year 5 teams who won their semi-finals on Saturday and will play in the Preliminary Finals on Saturday. Good luck!

The 10 year Year 4 team played in B grade and just missed the play offs by coming 5th overall. Great job 10B!

The combined 3/4 team 9 year team in their first year at Cannon road have become a very strong team winning pretty much every game! Roll on next year when they will play in the 10s and finals for the first time.

Last but not least, our 2 NetSetGo teams who played at Loftburg had some awesome games while playing in a happy and non-competitive draw. I also want to thank the wonderful coaches from Year 10 and 11 at Loreto - who all once attended Prouille - for their dedication to their teams this year.

The Season Presentation Gathering will be held at the Holy Name Parish Picnic in October - look forward to seeing everyone there!

Season 2018 - if you want to play netball next year please don't hesitate to get in touch as if there is enough interest we will organise some netball fun afternoons in Term 4 for anyone who would like to give it a go first before they decide!! Mary Weaver
