Dear Parents and Carers, Want to give your children a gift that will last a lifetime? Then, encourage them to read for pleasure. Those who read for pleasure have active imaginations and enjoy learning; indeed, reading is a gift that will last forever: “I can’t get around much anymore. When I go somewhere, I have to go in a wheelchair. But when I read, I can go anywhere, anytime I want. And no one has to help me.” Mavis Gleeson. 98 years old! Reading is the avenue through which children learn just about everything; it is reading that will broaden children’s horizons and take them into new and exciting worlds that are paved with endless wonder and imagination. Reading is an interactive activity, for when children read they are involved with the book, imagining the characters and scenes and painting images in their minds which enable them to be creative and to think for themselves. Way back in 1700 the poet and dramatist, Joseph Addison, wrote; “Reading is a basic tool in the living of a good life.” More recently, Marla Herrick gave us this insight: “I’ve travelled the world twice over, met the famous – saints and sinners, poets and artists, old stars and hopeful beginners. I’ve been to places of great wonder, beauty as well as terror. I’ve learned secrets from writers and cooks and all with one library card that gives me access to the wonderful world of books.” How true is the statement of each of these people! Dear Parents and Carers,

Want to give your children a gift that will last a lifetime?

So, do you want to give your child a gift that will last a lifetime? Then, maybe Book Week is a great time to start or perhaps, restart.

The world of books provides a wonderful treasure chest to delve into whether it be fantasy, fiction or reality. Join Prouille as we go on a treasure hunt during Bookweek 2018! Dear God please bless all the individuals who are so creative and share their stories with us.

22nd August Week 5 Term 3 2018

PUBLIC SPEAKING

The children from each class need to be congratulated on their Public Speaking. They have been presenting very articulate, confident and interesting speeches to their peers, parents and friends. Next week we will move onto Years 3 and 2 presenting their speeches.

Our Prouille Public Speaking Finals will be held on Monday 17th September. Years 3 - 6 will be held from 9.00am and Years K-2 will be held from 2.00pm.

Allocated Time for Speech

Kindergarten and Year 1 1 minute Years 2, 3, 4 1 ½ to 2 minutes Year 5 2 to 2 ½ minutes Year 6 3 minutes

To allow the children to all speak within the hour available it is essential that every child keeps to the allocated time.

Topics Our Year 6 students might like to use their speeches that they prepared for the Diocesan Public Speaking Competition. All other children will be able to choose their own topic. Our theme for this year is:

“Everyone Has a Story to Tell”

Next Tuesday 28th August Sophie McGrath and Liam Massey will be representing Prouille at the North Shore Cluster Public Speaking Competition at St. Bernard’s School Berowra. We wish Sophie and Liam every success. FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST AND LITURGY Father’s Day breakfast and liturgy will be held on Friday 31st August at 7.30am CLUSTER ATHLETICS CARNIVAL-NARRABEEN Prouille was well represented at the annual Athletics Cluster Carnival held on Tuesday at the Sydney Academy of Sport, Narrabeen. With a squad of 36 athletes, we participated whole heartedly with a strong school spirit and respect for the rules that govern such events. As in previous years, our students competed well and were rewarded for their great effort. All gave their best and they are to be congratulated on their participation and performance.

We were delighted as a school, to have students through to the next level of competition – The Diocesan Athletics Carnival, which will be held on Tuesday 4th September at Narrabeen. We wish Natasha Rodriguez-Foord, Isaac Wright, and Tadhg McGrath all the best for the Diocesan Carnival on the 4th September!

Thank you to Ms. Karen Townsend, Mrs. Kate McLaughlin and Mrs. Lisa Lynas for organising and supervising the students for the Cluster Carnival. Once again congratulations to the entire squad for their participation and achievement.

….Well done Prouille!

CYBER-SAFETY AWARENESS

What is Fortnite?

The game kicks off with 100 players – all real-time people, and often strangers to each other – jumping out of a plane on to an island where they essentially brawl with one another to the death (along with a bunch of zombies) until only one player is left. It might not display blood and guts when a player is shot or killed, but it is a multi-player shooting game and each player is armed with a pick-axe upon being dropped onto the island. Since this kill-or-be-killed game was released by Epic Games in September, it's been downloaded 40 million-plus times globally. The dangers of Fortnite for children According to a spokesperson from the Office of the eSafety Commissioner, one of the biggest dangers lies within the fact anyone playing Fortnite is directly connected to hundreds of strangers. "Fortnite players have direct contact with other players through the chat or voice function and may be exposed to offensive or inappropriate language," they say. Profane language aside, stranger-danger online in general can lead to further harm extending, but not limited to, your child potentially sharing personal (think financial) details with someone they don't know, as well as putting themselves in an unknowing position to form relationships with online predators. Parent responsibilities

Parents need to be aware that children are playing against ‘real people’. Does your child know these actual people?

Parents need to be aware that police have identified individuals and groups who are using this game to ‘groom’ young children

Parents need to be aware that this game is not recommended for children 12years or younger.

Parents need to be aware that this game is highly violent.

Parents need to be aware that this game is proving to be addictive.

“Parents are the first line of defence when it comes to helping children prevent and overcome online challenges; this includes helping them build the resilience, critical reasoning and good judgement skills.”

God Bless
