Things have quieted down to a dull roarin the office, but I’m sure it is temporary.Sales and new memberships are still goingstrong. I would like to havethat information in December so I can startpreparing meet packets for early shows in2015.

The 2014 ABA Yearbook is on it's way to

you. If you have not received your by Sep-

tember 30, please let me know and I can in-

vestigate why. We ship these bulk mail and

sometimes they are lost in the mail. We will

replace those that are deemed lost in transit.

Our centennial celebration is coming soon.

November 7-8-9 in Columbus Ohio will be

the place to meet and celebrate 100 years of

the American Bantam Association. We have

lots of things planned and hope to see every-

one there.

One of the big things is our 2014 Centen-

nial Standard which will be available for sale.

This is our launch of the first ABA Cen-

tennial Standard featuring color photographs.

I would especially like to thank our sponsors

of this project for making this a reality. Their

support has helped us be able to get this off

the ground. Also - the work of Neil

Grassbaugh, our photographer/editor has

brought his skill set to this project. We are

grateful for his time and energy he has given

to this very special project. We are very

excited to present this to you and plan to add

additional pictures in future printings.

We are pleased to once again offer our

very popular ABA Annual Breeders Auction

again this year in Columbus. We are accept-

ing donations for this and will be advertising

We still have some 2014 legbands avail-

able for sale. The 2015 versions will be avail-

able after the first of the year. These bands

are designed to help you, the breeder, by keep-

ing track of not only individual birds, but also

their age. Each band has the current year on

them and is put on the bird as they grow. Once

on, the bird will continue to grow and the

legband cannot fall off, and a new one cannot

be applied.

There is ample room for comfort as well.

There is a legband size chart listed on our

website at bantamclub.com and in your ban-

tam standard.

Speaking of Bantam Standards, the 2014

version will be the thirteenth edition. That

means there are twelve other editions. For

those looking to start a collection, we have

This might be a sermon. It's about a

chicken. It happened Saturday night about

9:15. A new young dog that I did not want

alerted me, and the dogs crated in the house,

that something abnormal was happening out

in the chicken shed.

I grabbed the small flashlight and took off

out the back door. Thirteen-day-old Modern

Game bantam chicks screaming that scream

made me fly out the gate and into their wired-

in room. I flashed the light around ... onto a

very long, very beautifully patterned snake.

Out of its mouth protruded 2/3 of the chicks'

mother, my best and favorite hen, Sandpiper.

I made some sound that meant "turn her

loose!" I had to save the chicks first though.

They were backed into their coop's front cor-

ner closest to me, screaming and standing as

tall as they could. I grabbed an empty Max-

well House coffee canister and set the babies

in the bottom. I counted only five. At bedtime

there were seven. I snapped the lid on.

When I turned around, the snake was exit-

ing stage left and Sandpiper was lying on the

coop floor. Her head, neck and upper chest

were wet and slimy. She was flat out, but

struggling to breathe.

I grabbed a 3-foot-long rake and started the

fight. Unlike the thick black snakes in north

Arkansas they call chicken snakes, this one

didn't charge me with its mouth open. It was

only interested in leaving. I was only inter-

ested in killing it. I told it

that. I wanted it to know.

Wrapping its coils in the

prongs of the rake and pull-

ing as hard as I could, I tried

to break it loose from the

wire, but it had all the lever-

age . We fought on fo r a

while, silently. Usually I

make a lot of noise in a

snake fight. Not in this one.

Another few minutes of

str uggle in an awkw ard

space with no maneuver

room and the snake got

away.

The hen, barely one year

old, had her head up. I didn't

feel much hope at all from

the way she looked and the

experiences I've had, but I

asked God to spare her any-

way. I carried her and the re-

maining babies inside, put

feed and water in a new cage

I'd just finished, and set

them in the dining room under cover.

It is now 5:01 Sunday evening. Sandpiper

has improved inch-by-inch and when I fed a

minute ago and a chick leaped out and pan-

icked itself, she fuzzed up and made a pass at

me. Now that is progress. She'd been far too

quiet all day. Can't fault her for that. If I'd

been swallowed and regurgitated by a snake,

I wouldn't have lived, much less spoken again.

Never discount the word "game" in a

chicken's name.

Why might this have been a sermon? I don't

know. I suppose it all depends on how you

look at things. Life and death struggles, a

mama who fought for her babies in the dark, a

mama who might have lived because some-

one loved her and prayed for her. I don't know.

Take it however you want. But as for me, God

gave me my chicken back.

And the new dog I don't want pleased me.

Maybe she can stay.

Ed Haworth: MoreThan Just A Judge

Delaware County poultry and rabbit exhibi-tors will see a familiar face when they go puttheir projects on the show table at the 2014county fair, the familiar face of judge EdHaworth.

Haworth is returning to judge the poultryand rabbits after having done it for severalyears in the past.

“I can’t remember how many years I havecome but I know it has been for several yearsnow,” Haworth said. “I always look forwardto coming to Delaware County - they havesome really great kids up there.”

Haworth was a junior at Broken Arrow HighSchool when he took on raising poultry as anFFA project.

“I was a junior in high school so it wouldhave been 1975 I guess. There was an organi-zation called the Tulsa County Farm Club thatgave away chicks each year but you had to raisethem up and bring them to the Tulsa StateFair,” Haworth added. “I got 25 chicks. Theywere Barred Plymouth Rocks and SilverLaced Wyandottes. I raised them and theyturned out to be pretty nice show birds.”

Haworth took them to the 1975 Tulsa StateFair and fared well with that first group ofbirds.

“I raised a Barred Plymouth Rock male outof the bunch that was a really nice bird. Inamed him ‘Kirby’. After that I was prettymuch hooked.”

This was also about the time Haworthstarted on a new variety of chickens thatwould become his signature breed, the breedwas Turkens or Naked Necks.

“I was working for a guy in Coweta and hehad several breeds of poultry and he had someNaked Necks. I got some eggs from him andput the eggs in an incubator.. From the timethe first one hatched I fell in love with thebreed. That first batch come out like the col-ors of the rainbow. I soon found out that theycame in certain colors you could show and Istarted working toward those colors.”

Thirty eight years later Haworth saw whathe had worked on for so long come to pastwhen he had Grand Champion Large Fowl atthe Tulsa State Fair, with of all things a WhiteNaked Neck male”

“I saw everything come full circle that day.Here I was where I started so long ago win-ning an award that I had longed for so long.And it was with the breed I love the most.”

After graduation from Bixby High SchoolHaworth attended Oklahoma State Universityand graduated with a degree in agricultureeducation.

“After graduation I got a job at Beggs HighSchool as an agriculture instructor.”

Haworth worked there for three years be-fore he decided to travel the country as a salesman.

“I traveled around the country as a sales manfor a while and then I became an elementaryteacher.”

A number of circumstances transpired thatbrought him to Oklahoma near Tahlequah.

“I came to Shady Grove in 1989 as an el-ementary teacher not knowing how long Iwould stay and do this and that was 25 yearsago.”

Haworth decided he liked the Tahlequaharea and decided to raise his family there. Hemarried his wife DeShaune and has two daugh-ters, Bracie who is a freshman at the Univer-sity of Arkansas majoring in nursing, and 15year old Hannah,

“I never tried to force the chicken showingon them, it has always been their choice.Bracie decided she wanted to show and hasdone a little judging the last few years butHannah doesn’t have any interest in the chick-ens and that is fine with me.”

Along the way Haworth has had anotherside of his life, that of the rodeo world.

“I grew up in the rodeo world. My dad wasa calf roper and I started out in a number ofevents but bull riding was my event of choice.Then I got banged up a little bit and decidedto do bareback bronc riding,” Haworth re-plied. “Then I started being a bull fighter andbefore long the opportunity came along to bea rodeo clown. I decided this was for me.”Haworth continued to entertain crowds at ro-deos across the region until he retired in2009.

“I retired five years ago on my 51st birth-day. My daughters were getting bigger and Ijust decided it was time to hang that part ofmy life up.”

When he gets home each night from teach-ing at the Cherokee County K-8th grade schoolHaworth likes to spend time on his farmnortheast of Tahlequah. You will see a varietyof chickens running around the property there.

He also has horses and some cattle. Other-wise you will see him at poultry shows aroundthe region with his poultry and especiallyshowing the Naked Necks. You will also seehim doing something else that is importantand very dear to his heart, judging youth poul-try shows around the area.

“I judge four or five fairs and youth showsa year, sometimes more.” He feels what heis doing has a chance of making an impact onthe next generation.

“Showing chickens had a big impact on mylife. I come out and judge these shows tosupport the kids and help encourage them tocontinue as a hobby,” Haworth continued.“Showing some of the other species of ani-mals has become very competitive and expen-sive. Almost anyone can afford a few showchickens and the feed to feed them.”

Haworth has seen some of the kids that havestood on the other side of the table changefrom their experience of showing chickens.

“I have seen some just make a total turn-around over the years. They all learn the samethings whether it is a 1,000 steer or a bantamrooster to put on the show table.”

Haworth went on to say, “I want to see thekids learn life’s lessons though this. Theylearn responsibility and commitment. Itteaches you that you have to be dependable tosomething besides yourself.”

Haworth will get his chance to judge the2014 Delaware County Fair poultry and rab-bit show beginning at 5 p.m. Thurs. Sept. 4.

The APA Standard of Perfection defines‘type’ for any breed, as “the general shape andform common to all members of a breed re-sulting from breeding to an ideal shape andsize as set forth in the Standard of Perfec-tion”. This definition applies to Araucana justas it does to all other recognized breeds. Withthe Araucana the key word in looking at thecorrect type for the breed may be the word“medium”.

This word, medium, or moderate, is usedeighteen times in the brief descriptions de-scribing shape of the male and female Arau-cana. The Araucana breed is best known forit’s blue eggs, and for it’s unique characteris-tics of having no tail and having tufts of feath-ers on the sides of it’s head. Yet ‘type’ goesway beyond these three key breed character-istics.

According to the well known author BrianReeder, “The silhouette is the outline. It iswhat defines all breeds and most landraces.It is, at it’s most simple, the design of the skel-eton, and the way the feathers lay upon themuscle that are placed on the skeleton. Threethings thus interact to make the outline of thebird: skeleton, muscling, and feathering.”

As Cathy Brunson wrote in her book,“Araucanas - Rings On Their Ears”, “Theproper style (type) for Araucanas is interme-diate between the two classes of chickens . ..every part blends together and forms a har-monious appearance. The birds are smoothsleek and balanced. Yet they have the strength,muscular development, and large wing, thatyou would expect on a semidomesticatedjungle bird.”

Key to the ideal si lhouette of theAraucana’s profile is the back of “mediumlength with a posterior slope”, a breast whichis “full, round, deep,” a body of “:moderatelength, broad and deep”, and “medium” fluff.The neck also should be of medium length andslightly arched and the head of the Araucanashould be “moderately large, short, broad”.These descriptions of the breed are from theAPA Standard of Perfection. Putting them alltogether, you can see that the Araucana is adual purpose meaty breed but should not havethe size of the heavier breeds like American,English, and Asiatics, or the lean and more

angular build of the Mediterranean breeds.Standard weights for Araucana large fowl

range from 3.5 pounds for pullets up to 5pounds for a mature Araucana cock. Exceptfor size (24 oz. pullet -28 oz. cock) every-thing stated here should also apply to the ban-tam Araucana. As written in the SOP, “Shapeand color descriptions the same as for the cor-responding variety of large Araucanas.”

There are a number of things that can throwoff the sleek, balanced look of the Araucanaand these undesirable traits will still be com-monly seen where Araucana are exhibited dueto the rarity of the breed and the difficulty ofworking with so complex a package of traitsin one breed. Araucana with overly fluffyplumage, and small er w ings wil l lacksmoothly blending lines. Usually due to hav-ing too much blood from the heavier breedsof poultry. If an Araucana’s wing carriage istoo low, or if they stand too upright, or if theyare not as muscled as they should be they maybe exhibiting a bit too much Game or Conti-nental breeding mixed in. Even the fluff ofan Araucana should be medium, which con-tributes to the over all shape when viewedfrom the side. Fluff that is too full not onlycontributes to breaking up the smooth oblongprofile of the breed it also causes problemsin the breeding pen in relation to fertility. Awell built Araucana that is true to breed typewill have no problems actually breeding. Thetail is not necessary for balance for eitherbreeding or flying. My Araucana can usuallyfly further and out-run any of my tailed chick-ens.

Although the Araucana is grouped in theAll-Other-Standard-Breeds class. It shouldnot have the upright stance of the Orientalbreeds that it so often is shown against, northeir hard feathering. As stated earlier almosteverything on the Araucana is “medium”, ex-cept when we get closer to the face and head.You wil l often see Araucana with too muchwattle, oversized earlobes, generally toomuch excess skin around the face and this isa fault. The Standard states that the face shouldbe smooth in texture, the wattles, and ear-lobes, should be very small or absent. Thosetraits combined with a nice tidy pea comb (notbeefy) should be perfectly framed by two bal-

anced tufts of good length, that evenly set onthe head and are the same shape and size. Thatis our ideal bird.

As mentioned earlier - this is a very toughbreed to work with. Just the tufts alone mayinvolve (in my opinion) up to four sets ofmodifying genes that control size, shape, lo-cation, and length of the actual tuft feathers.

Since I have described the perfect Araucanaaccording to the Standard I would like to statethat I have never seen one (a perfect Arau-cana). I have bred and shown some that werevery close to what I would consider ideal andI know of other breeders who have done thesame. But the truly exceptional bird is stillrare. When I started with his breed many yearsago many judges and exhibitors told me thatthey had never before seen an Araucana at ashow. At the time, this could be because someof the older breeders had passed on, or justlost interest . When I started out with thisbreed finding any Araucana stock at all wasalmost impossible. However, that situationhas changed drastically in the last few yearsand it seems there may be 20-30 or morepeople seriously trying to work with this breedand many more than that are enthusiastic andlearning.

Most people do not know that the Araucanawas admitted into the APA as a recognizedbreed without fulfilling all of the normal re-quirements necessary for other breeds. Thebreed was admitted by the APA as a recog-nized breed in 1976 and assigned 5 varieties:Black, White, Black Breasted Red (Cubalayatype color), Golden Duckwing and Silver

Duckwing. The latter two varieties are tomatch the description for the same variety inModern Games (large fowl).

As far as which varieties of Araucana arecurrently closest to the Standard of Perfec-tion on type, my opinion is that the blacks havemany more breeders working on them and arecurrently the best representatives of our breedat this time. The best whites are very close ifnot equal to the better blacks. There are afew good examples of Black Breasted RedAraucana around the country and there aresome good Golden Duckwings. The varietythat still needs the most work in both type andcolor are the Silver Duckwings. I have neverseen, in person (or even in a picture) a reallygood Silver Duckwing Araucana male. Or agood female in the large fowl. The SilverDuckwings may be our last and biggest hurdleto get across as a breed.

With Araucana now regularly placing highat sanctioned shows nationwide the proof isthere that dedicated breeders are making head-way in improving the overall quality of thebreed. As long as we remember how impor-tant correct breed type is - along with the morenoticeable traits like, rumplessness, tufting,and blue eggs - This breed should continue tomake a positive impact in the show halls na-tionwide.

YOUTH CLUB NEWS

Hi Everyone!I hope you are all raising a bunch of

chicks for the coming fall and spring showseason. It’s pretty exciting to get your ownbirds in the showroom when you’ve workedso hard breeding and raising them. It cer-tainly is the place to get them judged tosee how your breeding program workedout.

We are really gearing up for a busyshow season. We have been doing a lotof searching for new items to have avail-able for sale on our tables and on thewebsite. Most of them will make greatChristmas presents too. Right now, as Iwrite this, we have 4 brand new items thatare unique to the youth club. I don’t wantto give you too much information yet...Iwant it to be a surprise. Here’s a “headsup” though. We will be running some hugesales on items in our book line so keepthis in mind also when you are doing yourChristmas shopping. This special sale willbe for our members only and your par-ents.

I’ve been working closely with the Ten-nessee Valley Poultry Club on our 2014APA National show event. Boy, they aregoing overboard for junior exhibitors andthis is very exciting since I’m a big projunior person as you know. As for ourspecial group, I’ve already purchased allof the awards that I think, of course, arevery special and unique to the APA-ABAYouth Poultry Club. I’m just praying wehave a big turnout so all of you get a chanceto win some of them. I know there areother big shows coming up but this is yourchance to attend and participate in the APANational showmanship classes and all ofthe other special contests that are run byus just for a “national” event. The APA isreally supporting us and want our juniormembers to have a memorable time that

they will remember for years to come.I imagine almost all of you are back in

the “back to school” routine. Be sure totake time to keep your grades up, partici-pate in school activities and thank yourparents for all they do for you while youare so busy.
