Brafords are a real Australian successstory; bred to withstand the harshestseasons while remaining fertile andfunctional. Now backed by feed efficiencydata and meat quality awards, the modernBraford has a lot to be proud of.

It's these very qualities of fertility, efficiency and functionality combined withthe added benefit of proven eating qualityand market acceptance, that have seenBrafords become one of the world's fastestgrowing breeds.

Stephen, Elaine and Martin Lill ofChadwick Downs have been breedingBrafords for a quarter of a century andhave grown to love the breed that not onlydoes well in the rugged, mountainous andoften harsh climate of the Warrumbunglemountain ranges at Coonabarabran, NSWbut are proud of the breed that has putthem on the global map.

‘We breed Brafords for theiroutstanding adaptability, fertility andresilience under any season' said StephenLill, Principal of Chadwick Downs.

“This ability to rear a great calf in thetoughest of seasons continues to impressus and it's reflected in the globalpopularity of the breed.'

To date Chadwick Downs have soldsemen to five continents around the world, with the countries of South Americaimporting the majority.

“Australia represents something veryattractive to countries like Argentina,

Paraguay and Brazil' Stephen said.“Australian cattle producers have bredanimals with constitution, fertility andlongevity built right into the product andthat's something that many other cattleproducing countries around the worldhave left by the wayside. The type oflivestock we select for are the ones that dowell on our properties and for our repeatclients.”

Chadwick Downs have chosen a draftof eight selected Braford bulls torepresent the herd at the NationalBraford Sale September 12 inRockhampton.

“The bulls we are offering are a verymodern take on the traditional Braford,Stephen said. “We've added extraperformance without increasing maturesize. We've improved the carcase of thebulls while maintaining calving easeand most importantly, all bulls aresemen tested and come backed by afertile breeder herd with provenefficiency and confirmed by over100,000 cows around the world”.

In addition to the popular Brafordherd, Chadwick Downs is home to arelatively new but increasinglysuccessful Brangus Stud.

‘We began to breed Brangus in responseto Australian and International demand.“Brangus are one of the world's mostsuccessful breeds and their popularity hasjust taken off here in Australia.”

“Being polled and having theability to inject a bit more carcassand having a big hit of fertilitywithout shaking up theconsistency of the breeding herdtoo much are Brangus strongpoints.”

Chadwick Downs is predominantlybreeding Red Brangus and although thestud is now a decade old, Chadwick Downshas Champion Awards at Rockhampton'sBEEF 2009 and at the EKKA in 2008 and2010.

Red Brangus were chosen for theirability to fit right in to existing breedingprograms in our immediate area but alsoin herds across central and northernAustralia.

Chadwick Downs is offering 14 topquality Red Brangus bulls at the RedBrangus Classic Sale September 27 at theCQLX Gracemere.

As with all Chadwick Downs bullsoffered for auction, the sale bulls will behealth checked, semen tested, fullyvaccinated and guaranteed. They alsocome backed by a cow herd raised underreal world conditions.

25 years ~ from Australia to the WorldFor the past 25 years the name Chadwick Downs is

synonymous with Braford Cattle. However, ChadwickDowns has been one of Australia's most significantexporters of cattle genetics for 15 years. Supplying theever increasing demand for this truly Australian breedaround the world with Braford genetics.

We are a cows that calve every year pro-gram and we like to meet a range ofrequirements from heifer bulls to terminalsires and all areas in between. Our bullsare prepared to a joining weight, not a fin-ishing weight, on Leucaena pastures andoats to ensure their longevity and quickadaptations to their new environments.

Sandon Glenoch Angus was establishedin 1971 and last breeding season we joinedjust over 500 cows. We measure all traitsand we have been performance recordingsince 1986.

On Wednesday 17th August, 82 bullswill go under the hammer for our 20thannual on-property sale. These 82 bullswill meet a range of requirements that arebacked by our three year breeding sound-ness guarantee. They are structurallyassessed as well as semen and morphol-ogy tested. The bulls have been vacci-nated for 3 Day, Vibrio, 5 in 1, andLepto. They've also all been blooded fortick fever and have been ear notch test-ed negative for pesti-virus.

In addition to supplying the bulls' full

pedigree and EBV information in thesale catalogue, we also provide data onevery bull's dam including the numberof calves she has had and her averagecalving interval. Presentation of thisdata objectively proves breeder fertilityand functionality.

This year the genetics of our bulls arelittle more diverse with a number ofnew sires being used. This will be anadded advantage for past clients lookingfor something new while still under abreeding philosophy such as ours. Abreeding philosophy that keeps to atight calving period, places pressure onfemale function and maintains a multi-trait focus to ensure progeny have theright balance. A breeding philosophythat allows form to follow function toproduce growth, carcase performanceand phenotype.

The success of the Brangus breed haslargely been due to the dedication of breedersto breed adaptable cattle that can meet marketspecifications. Many of the traits that Brangusbreeders take for granted are qualities thatcommercial breeders aspire to havethroughout their herd.

Brangus offers the poll gene intocommercial herds with the known benefits ofno dehorning stress on calves and operators. With labour on properties becoming moreexpensive reducing the workload makeseconomic sense. Add to this no weight loss dueto stress and the benefits can quickly add up.

Commercial breeders that have Brangusfemales in their herd report on their strongmaternal instinct and ability to raise heavycalves. Equally as impressive as the maternalbase to a herd or injected through sirepurchases Brangus genetics offer producersversatility in their marketing options.Brangus dams in the right country will turnoff heavy vealers or weaners that will grow onand finish either on grain or grass.

The highly regarded Toogoolawah PrimeCattle Show recently proved the ability of theBrangus breed to meet specifications. Thejudging resulted in Brangus cattle winningthe Champion Pasture Fed Female Exhibit,Champion Pasture Fed Steer or Bullock, andChampion Pen of Grain Fed Steers orBullocks. The Champion Pasture Fed Steer orBullock was the winner of the Single steerclass, showing no permanent teeth. TheBrangus/Brahman cross steer weighed in at642kg at 23 months. The Champion Pen ofGrain Fed Steers or Bullocks was the winnerof the Pen of three steers or bullocks bred andowned by the Exhibitor and showing no more

than two permanent teeth. The pen had anaverage weight of 612kg, milk teeth and anaverage age of 21 months.

In reality the Brangus breed combinesefficiently two of the largest gene pools in theworld Brahman and Angus. Selecting for thebenefits of both breeds has produced a breedthat can endure and conquer the harshestenvironment and still produce a keenly soughtafter marketable product.

Brangus breeders could be consideredahead of their time. Recently CSIRO reporteda world first; researchers had inseminated 30young Brahman bulls with stem cells from thetesticles of European Angus bulls, so theBrahmans will deliver Angus sperm. It's hopedthey'll eventually father a hybrid species

combining theBrahman's heat tolerance with thevaluable marbled flesh of the Angus.Brangus breeders have been achievingthis for fifty years without the need fortechnical intervention.

The 6th Brangus World Congress to behosted by Australia during the BeefAustralia 2012 in Rockhampton willhighlight the quality of the Brangus breedand all cattle breeders are invited toinspect the display at Beef 2012. Australiabreeders are justifiably proud of their productand are planning to showcase the breed to bothlocal and international visitors.

Before then commercial breeders can selectsires with confidence at either of the Brangus Association sales, member on farm sales or

privately from the paddock. The Associationsales are based at Roma (2nd September) andRockhampton (10th & 11th October). Bulls atthese events are inspected for type andquality.

Commercial breeders can find moreinformation on the Brangus breed on ourrecently updated websitewww.brangus.com.au or by contacting theBrangus office 02 6773 3373. Alist of Brangussales is regularly updated on the site withcontact details.

Australian Brangus is now a member ofthe World Brangus Federation (FIBRA) andis the next host of the World BrangusCongress. This event will be held inconjunction with Beef Australia 2012 and ispromising to be an excellent opportunity toshowcase the Brangus breed. Take theopportunity to investigate the Brangus breedand the benefits this great breed of cattle hasto offer.

This November marks the 50th anniversary of the Australian Brangus CattleAssociation as a breed society. From humble beginnings the Brangus breed hasforged ahead to be a leading breed in the Australian industry with excellent growthin the last decade.

Offering 8 bulls at the National Braford Sale 2011

Visitors always welcome

by Ray Kidd “Cashmere” St George Qld.

This question is frequently asked

by many cattle pro-ducers. The answers are often complex where margins are small and markets variable.Feedlotting has be-

part of our beef in-dustry and is in fact value adding to a

product, which has a market value as a feed-on steer or heifer. The principle value to the consumer is to provide a uniform product in areas such as age, fat cover and size of cut. The product should not vary, regardless of seasonal conditions. The steer producer who breeds a better than average steer, should, I believe, endeavour to claim some of

feeding steers in a small feedlot operation on prop-erty, if labour is available. Alternately, custom feed-ing in a larger commercial feedlot where economy of scale can provide cost advantages.Current feeding costs are approximately $260 per ton fed. This varies with the price of grain, hay and addi-tives. A good-doing steer will eat up to 12-14 kgs of ration per day costing $3.60 per day or $364 over 100 days, with a daily weight gain of 2.2kg or 220kg over 100 days on feed. The cost is approximately $1.90 per kg live.

With these values and weight gains, a margin of ap-proximately $100 per head is possible. The downside for consideration are the non doers, with a possible 1% of cattle on feed, falling into this category. Ex-tremes of weather, hot, wet or cold can cause vari-

market prices. If possible, it is worth the effort to

a kill date.

no weight. Not knowing how long the dry spell will last, you may have to sell on a depressed market or feed a sus-tenance ration until it rains. In such circumstances, a cattle producer is better off carrying an extra heifer in a low weight gain year – at

This aspect needs to be considered when taking the feedlot option.

Braford or Braford Cross cattle are most suitable for the feedlot industry. Feeder cattle must have the con-stitution to achieve good weight gains, be early ma-

Cattle education will speed up the induction process, with cattle that have been encouraged to eat from a trough or feeder prior to entry into the feedlot will take less time to settle in, making the transition peri-od less stressful. Temperament also determines your bottom line with animals of nervous disposition often slow to learn and poor performers.Although margins are generally small, feedlotting is a useful management tool and should be considered as an additional option. A margin of 5-7% rolled over 3 months on feeder cattle, should return in the order of 15-20% on capital investment. The ideal weight for a steer destined for the Jap Ox trade is 420-490kg, 15-20 months of age in forward store condition with no permanent teeth. On average this steer should kill in 100-110 days and yield 340-390kg dressed.Heifers of similar age or younger for local trade, should enter the feedlot in the 340-370kg range and dress at 240-260kg.Currently, with the high Australian dollar hindering

Taroela MailBULLS FOR THE BUSH

No. 1 Photos taken, June 2011

LETTER TO THE EDITORDear Sir,It has come to my attention that commercial cattleman need a TAROELA BRA-FORD BULL.In my travels I have noticed at many fat and store sales from northwest Queensland, down to southern NSW, there has been a premium paid for Bra-ford and Braford infused cat-tle. Their ability to handle the extremes of cold , wet winters through to hot dry summers and still thrive, make Bra-fords an alternative for cat-tle people wanting to have a

-

terprise. The great mothering ability, ease of calving, ability to meet markets whether for the vealer market through to bullocks, and the resale value of the cull cow, or the extra weight , feed conversion, ear-lier turnoff to market from a Taroela Braford bull would be

a pure Braford herd. This year, Taroela Brafords decided to support the Wat-kins and Co Braford infused store sale at Roma with a line of heavy feeder steers. Their top pen of steers sold for 208.2c/kg to return $1012 and their line of 115 steers

averaged a tad over $950. In the female section, 405 kg replacement heifers sold to 204c/kg. Commission buyers at the day reported that a 5-10 cent premium was paid for a well presented line of Braford cattle. Just another reason to buy Taroela bulls. At the National Braford Bull sale at Gracemere saleyards on September the 12th of this year, TAROELA have nomi-nated 16 bulls. They will com-prise a line of rising 2 year old bulls and a line of 30-36 months old bulls. Polled and scurred bulls by Taroela Tal-lon and Ascot Ark dominate their draft of bulls. At the beginning of June , Taroela’s senior sire “TAL-LON” passed away. He has

herd running at Taroom over the last decade. Taroela stud is run on 2 properties, “Taroe-la” at Taroom and “Redbank” at Mitchell. It is a commer-cial based operation running 2000 breeders at Redbank and then they grow the steers out at Taroela, normally for the meat trade.I strongly suggest that your readers should seriously con-sider looking at putting a Tar-oela bull into their herds this year.

Yours Wazza

‘Ballis’ B017 - 51 sons ave $9382 last sale - another 50 in next sale!

Since foundation the Bransons have aimedto produce a high growth Angus herd that isboth objectively and subjectively differentfrom most Angus cattle. They are extremelydocile as a non-negotiable starting point, butit is their extra frame size and, with balancethey are longer. This alone is not necessarilyan asset, but when combined with Banquet'sstronger bone and wonderful muscling, theend result is a line that has thickness and con-stitution added to that extra length. Thus, it isnot hard to imagine why these cattle are sosuccessful and popular.

"As seedstock breeders we are producingcattle that put extra dollars in the pockets ofour clients," Stephen Branson said.

"We find these types not only have thegrowth and muscling being sought by proces-

sors, feedlotters and backgrounders, but alsocattle breeders in all environs. They also givegreater flexibility of market options. We wit-ness this first hand through our southernmarkets where clients are topping both steerand heifer weaner markets through to heavyweight steers. That gives us great satisfactionand confidence we are on the breeding track,"Stephen said.

The Bransons have been attractingincreasing numbers of Queensland clientsover the last 5 years, as astute Queenslandershave researched their qualities and foundthey are also ideal for crossing over the domi-nant Bos Indicus cattle, increasing growthrates and carcase quality in the progeny.

To cater for Queensland market growth, the Bransons are offering 10 typical big, bold

Banquet Angus bulls in the GDL Longreachsale to be held on 28th October. Stay tuned formore details on this offering.

The Bransons have established their suc-cessful breeding philosophy around top genet-ic cow breeding families within their herd, producing consistent high quality and bullswith repeatability of their strengths.

"The 600 day growth and mature cowEBVs in our cattle are very similar which isthe strongest objective indicator of good youngcattle that have the genetic capacity to keepgrowing rapidly and laying down muscle rightthrough their development", Stephen Bransonsaid.

Banquet has produced many standoutbulls for the beef industry, but one of theirnewest sensations is the pre-potent Banquet

Ballis. This outstanding sire had 51 sons inthis year's annual Banquet bull sale atMortlake in February that averaged $9382,22% above the sale average.

The good news is there will be another 50in their next annual bull sale offering andprobably some in the October Longreach offer-ing. For those Queenslanders who want toexplore options beyond the limited Longreachoffering, Banquet has private sale bullsbecoming available all year round, or you canattend their next 150 annual bull offering atMortlake on Thursday February 23rd 2012.To discuss breeding options with the

Hazeldean offers proven genetic performance

Hazeldeans high performance herd is built on along history of breeding cows with sound structure, docile temperament and natural doing ability.Feedlotters consistently recognize steers fromclients with Hazeldean Angus bloodlines by payingpremiums for lines of these steers. Hazeldeansgoal is to produce animals that will turn grass intodollars and reap the highest returns for theirclients; a highly fertile herd producing heavycarcases that command a price per kg premiumdue to superior eating quality.

Jim Litchfield stressed that all sale bulls areunconditionally guaranteed for 12 months underthe Hazeldean guarantee. "We realize that there isa significant investment in time and money when

purchasing bulls and the worst thing for a longterm business is to have a client dissatisfied withhis acquisition. So we ensure only the soundestbulls are put up for sale and have them allindependently structurally assessed. However inaddition to this we cover our bulls unconditionallyfor 12 months"

In addition to Angus bulls Hazeldean also hassome exciting Senegus bulls on offer. Senegus area cross between Senepol, the tropically adaptedBos Taurus from the Caribbean, and Angus. TheSenepol has a slick coat that gives the breed heattolerance and parasite resistance and Senegus willretain all of this advantage provided the slick coatis inherited. Senegus cattle offer an exciting optionfor cattle producers looking to maintain heat andparasite tolerance while producing beef that gainsa premium in the market due to lower Bos Indicuscontent.

Hazeldean 's core business is providingfunctional, profitable bulls to the commercial beefindustry and this means first of all maximising thenumber of live calves hitting the ground, buildingonto that base rapid growth rates and on top ofthat superior carcase data. It has to be in that

order to make money in the beef industry. "Getting a live calf on the ground out of every

cow in your herd is the essential starting point fora profitable business. A dead calf costs money."says Jim . Having a herd with exceptional fertilitylower than average birth weights, excellent calvingease teamed with high growth is the focus ofHazeldean .

Hazeldean's average EBV's for the herdexemplify these attributes, they are also abovebreed average for 600 day weight , fertility EBV'sand for all carcase traits.

Hazeldean Angus is renowned for it's easyhandling cattle with excellent temperament"Temperament is highly heritable; it affects

carcase quality, growth rates, and handling - anyanimal that shows bad temperament is culled."Says Jim.

The breeding program continues full steamahead and Hazeldean is particularly excited aboutthe recent purchase of top performing sire TeMania Berkley, for a record $65,000. Berkley hasexceptional performance data from a moderatebirthweight EBV of +4.7 he follows through toexplosive growth EBv's that reach +103 at 400days and +126 at 600 days and carcase data thatputs his Long Fed CAAB index at +$153Importantly with all this his fertility and calvingease EBV's are equally outstanding. He also has avery quiet temperament and super soundstructure - his first calves at Hazeldean are veryimpressive. He fits in perfectly with Hazeldean'sbreeding goals.

Hazeldean has undertaken extensive AIprogrammes with sons and grandsons of Sitz NewDesign 458N, Leachman Boomtime, LT Bando9074 plus sons of Hazeldean bred sires featuring inthe impressive 2011 line-up..

At the end of the day it allcomes back to profit, and at ElitePoll Herefords, the objective is toproduce sale bulls with thegenetics to increase profits andease the workload for our clients.

As stud principal, Kay Payneexplains, her breeding programplaces emphasis on two key areasto achieve this objective, namely, genetic calving ease and topcarcase attributes.

“By increasing calving ease, there are more calves to sell, moredams that go back into calf andless time and labour needed forsupervision, so ultimately moreprofits for clients", Mrs. Paynesaid.

“It is very important to realizethat our successful selection foreasily born progeny comes frombreeding genetic ability to calveinto our females. It doesn't meanlight calves with no growthpotential. Our heifers can deliver

40+kg calves that have been bredto be in the top 10% of the breedfor subsequent growth.

“So, our heifer's calves are ourgenetically superior, and mostvalued replacements and, ofcourse, our sale bulls carry thecalving ease genetics.”

At Elite Poll Herefords, theherd is run as a commercialoperation with selection aided byEBVs. Selling to a range ofmarkets including both domesticand export, MSA and the EU, hasensured Elite bulls are selected toproduce top progeny for thesespecific markets.

“Demand for cattle that willmeet the MSA market isincreasing, so our sale bulls withgood growth and higher IMF willproduce progeny with highcompliance rates for thatprofitable outlet.”

“Our cattle are noted for theirquiet temperament, which

greatly assists in the ease ofgeneral management andcontributes to better meat qualityand grid compliance", Kayexplained.

In the past two years ninesteers have been prepared andhave averaged a creditable 85points, including silver andbronze medal awards, whichdemonstrates the stud'sconsistency and success in herdselection.

Elite Poll Herefords have beendonating steers to local students toprepare for carcase competitions fora number of years.

This year, 35 bulls, most withMarket $Indeces in the top 20%,or better, of the breed will beoffered at the stud's on-propertysale to be held on 1st September.Further details can be obtainedby contacting Kay Payne on 026545 8135 or via email [email protected]

Two keys to breeding success

The 2011 annual Glen Innes Hereford bullsale sees 87 Big Beefy Sires catalogued forcompetition from a variety of studsthroughout the region.

The quality line up of bulls will all be Vetinspected and semen tested, ready to go out toperform in the cow herds across the region.

The change in seasons has brought with ita resurgence of interest and support to thebeef industry and the Hereford breed is nowpoised to again be the leader in producing theideal beef product for the market place.

Herefords are renown for their wonderfultemperaments which leads to a more easydoing beef producing unit and this internleads to a higher conversion of feed to beef andfaster turn- around from paddock to plate, which makes for a better bottom line for theproducer. The uptake of MSA also providesextra opportunities to increase returns fromthe beef processors along with Herefords being

ideal for the lucrative EU markets. At the 2011 Royal Easter show a team of

Poll Hereford steers were half a point fromwinning the prestigious Stan Hill Trophy foroverall hoof and hook carcase excellence whichreally does demonstrate the capabilities of theHereford breed as an outstanding meatmachine. While most studs are able toembrace Breedplan all bulls will be scannedfor carcase attributes the day before the salewith this information readily available onsupplementary sheets, for day of sale selectivecomparisons.

The annual Glen Innes bull sale hasalways been a discerning place for studproducers to snap up a relatively cheap newstud sire and 2011 will be no different with anumber of studs offering their top lines of bullsfor competition. The 2011 judging team ofRory and Peter Murphy of the famed MonreidHereford and Simmental studs have enjoyed

many successes over the years at Glen Innesbreeding many bulls that have madesignificant contributions to the successes forthis breed and their comments will be wellreceived. An interesting statistic to considerfrom the average price of last years' sale bullsis $3563, joined to 50 cow's means thatinvestment generated a calf for $71, and that'sjust the first year of service from thatinvestment.2011 sees the introduction ofheifers to the sale with 10 registered heiferscatalogued for competition. Some of theseheifers will already have participated in theNorthern regions Junior Heifer Show, for andrun by the regional youth group at the InverellShowground during the midyear schoolholidays. The sale has again attracted hugesupport from local businesses in the form ofsponsorship to help defray costs for which thevendors are eternally grateful and followthrough with support of those businesses.

Hereford Prime will again support the salewith a carton of mouth wateringly juicy beef tothe purchaser of the most lots.

Vendors who displayed bulls as part of Northern BeefWeek at the Glen Innes saleyards include Angus, Euniceand Will Vivers from Jindalee, Grant Kneipp fromBattalion, Roger Kneipp from Dundee Echo Park, GregScurr from Tahlan and seated Lachlan Scurr fromLachdale and Geoff hayes from Damona.

Burenda Angus joins again thisyear with Lawsons Angus to present90 plus Angus bulls. Breeding philoso-phies are similar in both studs andbuyers can be assured they will havethe choice from some of the best blood-lines in Australasia.

Burenda Angus was originallylocated at Augathella in the 1990's buthas been operating at "Dalby Downs"Kaimkillenbun for nearly 10 years. Itis conducted in conjunction with ourBurenda Brangus stud.

About 450 registered Angus breed-ers are joined mainly by A.I. with backup natural matings and embryos aretransferred into a number a recipi-ents. Leading Australian Sires areused along with selected US Sires to

improve certain traits.This year's E and F bulls had a

hard time during the 2 months offlooding but have done well since mov-ing onto oats in May. We will presentabout 33 two year old E bulls and 22eighteen month old F bulls.

Sires represented in the BurendaAngus line up include; Te Mania bullsVTMB580, VTMY437, ArdrossanBulls NAQA2 and NAQA241, DunoonBHRA017 and Burenda QBUY4

Full details of our Roma sale bullswill appear on our websitewww.burendaangus.com.au duringAugust including full information andvideos of each lot.

We grow our own bulls out onLeucaena and grass and they moveonto oats when it is ready. This combi-nation proves successful on achievinggood weight gains and the bulls

receive no grain in their preparation. There is a good blend of various traitsand types in this year's sale and buy-ers are assured they will have goodchoices. Carcase quality is of para-mount importance in our breedingphilosophy and as the Angus breedare world leaders in this trait, con-sumers like the Angus product. TheBurenda draft of bulls in our 2010Roma sale topped the Queenslandaverage with $6156.

This year Lawsons Angus are offer-ing 35 two-year old bulls all bred by AIfrom high accuracy proven Angussires including Lawsons Dinky-DiZ191, Lawsons Tank X1235, LawsonsPayload X951, Wilson Downs EquatorV191, SS Objective, TC Total,Ythanbrae Pono V346, GAR Ultimateand Leachman Boom Time. Bulls arewell grown and ready to go to work!

Lawsons Angus has been in busi-ness since 1969 and is the largestAngus seedstock producer inAustralia. Lawsons Angus42ndAnnual Production Sale inMarch 2011 is the largest Angus bullsale in Australia, which saw 210 bullssold with 100% clearance to averageover $5,700 and 260 females averag-ing $2,270.

Lawsons Angus is regarded as theleading Angus seedstock herd inAustralia, which produces around1,000 Angus bulls per year with anunmatched balance of calving ease, feed conversion, fertility, high growthand exceptional carcase yield andquality. The bulls on offer at Roma arethe same quality and sired by thesame world high accuracy AI sires.Lawsons Angus is not only Australia'sAngus largest seedstock but has divi-

sions in Queensland (Goondiwindi),Victoria (Yea) and Western Australia(Esperance). All herds are 100% AIwith a disciplined PLANNED MAT-ING PROGRAM that delivers consis-tent, predictable genetics.

Last year's Roma Sale bulls had arough period prior to sale with thefloods and did not present well visual-ly (phenotypically) but we have hadvery positive feedback on how thesebulls adapted to their new homes. Thecalf-getting ability of Angus bulls andthe extra growth and marketability ofthe Angus cross calves sired by provenperformance Angus is what setsLawsons Angus bulls apart.

Breedplan (EBVs) may be abstractto most commercial buyers it is themost accurate way to make consistent, predictable progress so we urge you totake make use of this data and notfocus on actual sale weights and scansas these are more indicative of man-agement/environment. Breedplaninformation reflects how these bullsand their siblings have performed rel-ative to their mates and other Angusacross Australia. The BreedplanEBVs accurately describe and predictwhat will be passed onto their calvesand is a very accurate way of rankingbulls for key traits including calvingease, growth and carcase traits. Thisis rock solid, simple technology that isstill being under utilised by northernbreeders and this is often accentuatedby a focus on actual weight on saleday. There are many differences in anindividual bulls' weight even betweencontemporary groups with factorssuch as date of birth, calving season, paddock, age of dam, fighting andsocial group impacts. All this raw datais analysed in Breedplan and throughgenetic linkage within and betweenherds we can compare animals accu-rately using Estimated BreedingValues (EBVs).

Some simple practical advice onBreedplan is if you are mating heifersselect bulls that are under breed aver-age for birth weight (<4.6 BW EBV)and 600 Day growth is the best pre-dictor for how fast progeny will grow,we refer this to a bulls 'horsepower'rating and is highly correlated togrowth rates and feed conversion ofcalves. Again, no other herd canmatch the calving ease, high growthcombination of Lawsons Angus.

Currently 800 registered Anguscows are run under a disciplined 100%AI program at Kinbeachie nearGoondiwindi under a joint venture withthe Sullivan family. Cows are insemi-nated to the best Angus proven siresavailable, selected mainly fromAustralia and the United States. Allcows are synchronised for two rounds ofAI over 25 days so there is huge selec-tion pressure on fertility. As HarryLawson commented "Just because weperformance record doesn't mean wedon't focus on structure, temperament, udders and conformation, in fact wehave a better handle on than mostbecause we individually mate every cowand have large sire lines by the worldleading AI sires so we know all thestrengths and weaknesses of bulls evenbefore we use them widely across themain cow herd."

Kate Todd and Harry Lawsonlook forward to meeting you atRoma along with the Burenda teamwho we are pleased to be able towork with to put together a greatselection of Angus bulls adapted toQueensland conditions that areideal for hitting top end MSA speci-fications or high quality feedlotmarkets.

This year's bulls will again sellwith full information including, pedigrees, EBVs, ultrasound scan-ning details, scrotal measurementsand daily weight gain and will alsobe blooded for tick fever, vaccinatedfor three day sickness, botulism, vibrio, and 7 in 1 vaccine. They willbe independently assessed forsoundness and fertility and carry atwo year warranty.

University of Adelaide researcher DrWayne Pitchford said research showedthe eye muscle area is 19 percent largerin cattle carrying the gene than cattlewith no copies of the gene.

Similarly, the weight of the silversidemuscle was also 19% larger.

"The size of the muscle fibres does notchange but there is a reduction inconnective tissue caused by an increasein the number of muscle fibres," DrPitchford said.

"The good news is that animals withthe gene do not require any more feed."You are basically getting more meat forthe same cost of production.

"The gene is a modification of themyostatin gene and is found naturallyin Limousin cattle although there is alow frequency of the gene in otherbreeds such as Angus andDroughtmaster.

Meanwhile an analysis of 1.5 millioncattle sold in eastern Australian saleyardhas shown that buyers are willing to paylarge premiums for muscling.

Limousin Society general mangerAlex McDonald said the higherproportion of high priced cuts in bettermuscled cattle was the reason for thewillingness to pay the premium.

"The reasons for the premium pricespaid for better muscled cattle are due to

higher dressing percentages whichaccount for about 8 cents per kgliveweight and the higher yields of retailbeef from the carcase," Mr McDonaldsaid.

"At the carcase level an increase inyield of four percent on a 250 kg carcaserepresents 10 kg more saleable meat. Atan average retail price of $16.50/kg thisrepresents $165 at retail level.

"The producer gets paid more but thewholesaler wins because he gets aheavier carcase and the retailer winsbecause of the increased yield of retailbeef."

Mr McDonald said Limousin cattle

also enable breeders to avoid theincreasingly controversial HormoneGrowth Promotants.

Mr McDonald said crossbreeding andselection within breeds enabledproducers to get better gains than HGPcould provide.

"Breeds such as the Limousin breed canprovide large increases in retail beef yieldsand increased tenderness when used incross breeding programs," he said.

"The increased retail beef yieldprovided by Limousin exceeds the effectof treatment with HGPs especially inheifers and increases rather thandecreases tenderness and eatingquality."

Crossbreed with LimousinA gene found naturally in Limousin cattle can provide an

increase in the amount of high priced cuts in a beef carcase.

Crossbreed with Limousin for increased growth and higher yields of more

tender beef without the use of hormone growth promotants.

31,000‘On the Rump’ is delivered directto landholders via Australia Post’srural mail services from centralQueensland down to northernNew South Wales and into theNorthern Territory.

This year is the first ‘On theRump’ that has been deliveredwithout our passionate KymEllem, unfortunately Kim hasmoved into a new career and we,and I am sure our stud breedersalso miss her greatly. She has leftvery large footprints that will takea lot of filling.

This year we have justconcentrated on producing our‘On the Rump’ publication andyou will notice that we do nothave our extra publication of ‘BigBeef Business’ and our ‘BoardingSchool’ feature. The intention isthat this will be re-introduced in2012.

2011 has already brought manychallenges for our rural industries, with record rainfall and the

inevitable floods we have seen theend of a significant dry period thatthreatened the viability of beefproducers. From all reports forour stud breeders this year hasbrought forward a great season, one that will be remember andone that will continue for years tocome.

I think Australia’s primaryproducers are the most optimisticpeople in the world, they continueto look for better times to come, and hopefully this current periodwill be the perfect storm andprovide our primary producerswith as many years of good timesas they had to endure of the badtimes.
