Film Festival “A Place Called Sacramento”

Friends, family, and film crew members gathered in line outside the Crest Theater in Sacramento. Nine (9) films were created to go on the big screen. When the doors opened the lobby was full of happy excited people talking and taking in the aura of a movie premier. The sounds of Sister Swing could be heard in the background over the speaker system and the scent of popcorn filled the air.

Tables were set up with the filmmaker’s posters and souvenir flyers for their individual films. Flashes from cameras were going off from all over the lobby. Many photos were taken of friends huddled together. What an exciting experience.

We were all ushered into the theater from the lobby. The lights went down and ther was silence. Out of the corner of the packed theatre a booming voice could be heard with a powerful message. It was the voice of one of six poets from the Sacramento Area Youth Speaks (SAYS), a program for expression and creativity through poetry for youth at UC Davis.

Ron Cooper, the Executive of Access Sacramento then took the stage to welcome everyone.

“Bar Time” by Wayne Douglas Johnson; was the first of the nine films. It was about the 15 minute bar time differential that really has a huge effect for this film. (Continued on Page 9)

Film Directors and Ron Cooper of Access Sacramento People arriving at the Crest Theatre for “A Place Called Sacramento” Film Festival

I attended and participated in “A Touch of Understanding” at Sierra Oaks elementary school. It’s a non-profit organization. Their main focus is to teach kids in schools about people with disabilities.

I listened to a few speakers one was blind another was without hands. The man with no hands was an acrobatic pilot, and was driving a very fast car on the Bonneville Salt Flats pushing for

the land speed record. He was almost going 300 miles per hour when the car broke and he lost his hands and wrists. He was very enlightening for all the kids. He showed all the kids how his new hands worked. He took his prosthetics off so we could all see what his arms looked like. Then he had a volunteer hold the prosthetic hand and touch the sensors to make the hand move. She’ll never forget that.

I went through an exercise with about 11 of the kids. We listened on head phones to the sounds an autistic person would hear. Then we tried to follow a line on paper with a pencil by using a mirror only. I’ve done some of this before. It can open kid’s minds to better understand that we don’t know what’s going on in another persons mind. Also to have more consideration for people that might seem different.

I thought it was a pity some of the teachers didn’t participate with the students. We all have some kind of disability.

Within the Mind of a Millionaire

Meet Max…A Bichon Frise

Max, a nine year old Bichon Frise is owned by Ron and Lou Green of Gold River. Highly intelligent and loving, Max is wonderful with children, a perfect pet for indoors or outdoors with a small yard. Before moving to Gold River, and living in the country, the Greens always had German Shepard’s. Living in this area, they felt it would be unfair to a large dog not to have a big back yard to run and play in. The Bichon Frise descended from the Barbet or Water Spaniel, from which came the name “Barbichon”, later shortened to Bichon. The Bichon were divided into four categories: the Bichon Maltese, the Bichon Bolognese, and the Bichon Havanese. All originated in the Mediterranean area. The Bichon breed was bred to be amiable companion dogs and have a friendly, alert temperament. Their life expectancy is 15 years or more. Max will drink only fresh water. He will smell his water; if it is not fresh he will not drink it. When he wants to go “potty”, Max will stand by his leash to go outside; when he wants a snack he will stand by the refrigerator.

Dream Building and Goal Setting…Continued from October Issue

The difference between a dream and a goal is a goal is what you have to do in order to achieve what you want. (your dreams)

During a time of desperation I used one entire wall in a spare bedroom turned office and created wall paper out of images I cut from magazines of people that I wanted to emulate. I recommend you have a dream board that is in your face every morning and also something you can bring with you when you go to work. (a smaller version like on 3 x 5 cards). You never want to miss a day of being reminded why you’re working so hard. What the mind sees it believes and you must see for yourself where you want to be before you can get there. This is one very powerful way you can help motivate yourself to success.

Speak about the things you want to achieve as if they have already happened or are happening. I am sure you will run across those who will tell you that you need to be realistic. Perception is reality in this world, if you don’t have what you want then you have to perceive it as it will be. Paint the world the way you want it to be sharing your dream with those around you. Every successful person had to start somewhere. People will not follow someone who is not confidant about where they are going and what they want out of life. “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” Napoleon Hill

Don’t be afraid to dream big as long as you’re willing to work hard enough to make them come true. The very first step to achieving what you desire is writing it down. Writing down your dreams makes them more realistic and personal. Always include target dates with each dream you write down. Without a specific date associated with your dreams they will only be nice thoughts that may never be attained. Be specific with what it is you desire to accomplish. Personalize it, including details.

Example: “In one year from today I will be driving a black SL 550 Mercedes”. Find pictures of your car, go to a dealership and even test drive your dream car. That will bring your dream to life. I’ll share more next month.

Targeted for Termination….….I freely admit that I was blinded by the Schwarzenegger star-power as he ran for Governor during the Total Recall of Gray Davis in 2003. He had been built up in the preceding years as a rock-ribbed, conservative Republican speaking at campaign rallies and conventions. While I was a concerned with the Julius Benedict-type lack of experience he showed in Twins, I incorrectly assumed that he would surround himself with a solid, conservative staff to help guide him through the nuances of running a state government. I never realized what a Raw Deal we were getting.

After 2 years of pretending to be a Commando Republican, he appointed Susan Kennedy as his Chief of Staff and finally showed us who he really was: Arnold Shriver-Kennedy. He has governed like a Republican about as much as Barbara Boxer has. He’s acted like Ben Richards in The Running Man, trapped in the CA legislature looking for a way to escape instead of like John Kruger in Eraser looking to erase the failed policies and waste that are crippling our state’s economy. He has also shown a complete lack of political experience and left Collateral Damage on so many fronts (Death Penalty, Spending, Budgets, etc.) that I can’t even list all of them. He even had the gall this weekend to refer to Republican lawmakers that did not support the changes he was proposing in his budget to state pensions as sell-outs. True Lies, indeed.

On November 2nd, we will elect a new Governor but with each party running less-than-stellar candidates, there doesn’t appear to be a lot of “Hope and Change” on the horizon. It’s certainly not the End of Days for CA but I for one will be thrilled when our Kindergarten Cop FINALLY gets his pink slip….

How To Generate Content for Your Blog by Conducting InterviewsLast month, we discussed the business benefits of blogging. Astute reader

Michael Carter of Practice Paradox echoed our sentiments and offered an important suggestion about how you can create interesting content for your blog - by conducting interviews. Excellent point, Michael! So let’s dive into the “how to’s” of conducting interviews…

How to Find Someone to InterviewI’d recommend setting your initial sights high by targeting industry thought

leaders to interview. These days, EVERYONE is looking for additional exposure to new audiences. If you have an audience and platform, and you’re offering to put Mr./Ms. Thought Leader in front of your customer and prospect base (in a position of power, no less), then why wouldn’t they want to work with you?

How to Record the InterviewI use Skype to call people – specifically Skype’s Unlimited US & Canada plan.

For $2.95/month, I can make unlimited calls to landlines and cell phones in the US and Canada. It’s hard to beat that!

To record the interview, I use a product called CallBurner, which allows you to record Skype calls relatively effortlessly. It’s free to try, and $49.95 to purchase.

How to Edit Your InterviewAfter you finish the interview, CallBurner will allow you to save an mp3 file of

the interview on your computer. Next, you’ll need to edit the file – at least the very start and end of the interview.

Any audio editor will work for this purpose. I played around with a few free ones, but ultimately decided to purchase Audio Editor Pro for $39.95, which I found to be pretty intuitive and easy to use.

How to Post Your Interview for Listening and DownloadingNow that you’ve got a clean mp3 file of your engaging interview, it’s time to

post this baby online so that your eager audience can listen to and download the interview!

Again, you have a number of options here – one quick and easy one is SoundCloud, which includes a cool embeddable player that you can post directly to your blog. Your readers can listen to the interview directly via the player, and/or download an mp3 of the audio – pretty cool!

If You Love Your Children: Let Them Struggle

Being a parent isn’t an easy job. It’s the most incredible, challenging, miraculous, rewarding, and equally frustrating; and it’s ‘on-call’ for a lifetime. Nurturing a pet, plant and all other life forms fail in comparison to growing a successful human being. As a parent you are called to engage, teach, comfort, discipline, support, instruct and love your children. This is no small task or responsibility. Our children are our greatest natural resource. The choices we make as parents will be seen within the legacy of all future generations.

Loving your children includes allowing them to struggle. It is the only way they will build the fortitude necessary to overcome the certain challenges they will face in life. One character quality that has been chipped away from our youth, by well-meaning parents, and potentially the ease of modern day living, is perseverance. When parents try to save or rescue their children from being hurt, disappointed, experiencing the pain and consequence of their action weaken them and their ability to grow strong in the face of adversity. Parents cannot grow for their children; they can only facilitate growth within their children.

Birds, when their young hatch, understand this as a basic instinct. Fighting its way out of the egg isn’t easy for a chick. In some species of birds, like the bald eagle, it can take up to 12-48 hours for the baby bird to break out of its shell. However, through that time of struggle, the baby chick builds the muscle and strength necessary for sustainable life outside of the comfort and protection of the egg. If the chick is robbed of this struggle, it dies.

Despite the difficulty and strain our children must undergo to grow and learn from the consequences of their behavior, let downs or disappointments; no matter how difficult it may be for us to watch their growth, we must love them enough to let them struggle and build the muscles of perseverance. Perseverance leads to an unshakable confidence and resolve that can overcome any obstacle no matter how insurmountable.

DDSO and Local Winemaker Collaborate to Raise Fundsfor Regional Arts Programming for Developmentally Disabled

Sacramento-based winemaker James Blake Wines recently unveiled its newest artisan blend, Carita, with wine bottles featuring artwork by participants from Developmental Disabilities Service Organization (DDSO) programs.

The wine was created in honor of DDSO’s arts programming, and proceeds from each bottle will be given to support DDSO services including the Employment Plus (E+) program and Alan Short Center, Short Center North and Short Center South.

DDSO is a non-profit organization working to enhance the quality of life for adults with developmental disabilities in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys through self expression and the arts.

Over thirty participants submitted artwork for the contest and three winners were selected for the labels by a panel of judges from DDSO and James Blake Wines. The winners are Yvette Lemoullec, Rita Rosa Padilla and Elizabeth Smith.

The wine and winning artwork were unveiled at the Uncork for the Arts event on September 19, and Carita is now available for purchase. The

Uncork fundraising event was attended by 200 individuals in Sacramento and raised three times the revenue of past events. Organizers expect these results to improve with the sale of Carita.

James Blake Wines is headed by James Scheller and Blake Griffen, who chose the name carita, because it means charity in Italian.

It’s a Mystery to Me Have you ever wondered why a perfectly normal looking white-

haired grandma would turn to murder for a living? I just returned from a weekend in the city where I was surrounded

by homicide detectives, medical examiners, famous authors like Dennis Lehane and Lee Child, and the most dangerous of them all… those crafty women who wield their scissors and glue guns with a vengeance.

Yes, I am talking about sweet middle-aged women who not only indulge in scrapbooking as a hobby but who have managed to turn this paper pushing past-time into a paying profession.

It wasn’t that many years ago when most mystery series were written by a few extraordinary British writers like Dame Agatha or those icons of noir such as Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. We followed the travails of their fedora wearing, cigar chomping, brandy-swilling private “dicks” as they attempted to solve the crime and seduce the dame. Today those handsome but frequently tormented detectives have been outmatched by an army of white haired female detectives who not only know how to knit one and purl two, but they know exactly where to stick that needle to do the most damage.

They say that mystery writers are the most balanced folks around. I’m not quite sure who says that other than mystery authors but they do have a point. The rude loudmouth we encounter at a party can be taken care of on paper. The offensive dad at your kid’s soccer game can easily become the next victim in our murder mystery. I actually have a long list of former boyfriends submitted by my gal friends should I run out of potential victims in my sequels. Who needs anti depressants when you have the power of the pen, the keyboard, and my personal favorite…

How To Add Green To Any Business

By: La Ronda Bowen

Q. How hard is it to bring environmental practices into my business? R. The hardest part about greening any business is making the decision. Your start can be as small as purchasing sustainably grown coffee or tea instead of a conventional brand or as great as investing in solar panels to heat your water and provide electricity. One man’s commitment to simply unplugging computers, televisions and other electronic equipment at night grew into an income-producing sideline to his regular work. If you are planning to purchase a new car soon, you may be eligible for a $5,000 rebate plus other incentives should you decide on the LEAF or a plug-in hybrid (http://www.arb.ca.gov/lispub/rss/displaypost.php?pno=4444) . If your business is in sustainable technologies or you need financing to upgrade equipment or processes to be more efficient, remember that the SBA loan guarantees of up to 90% are in effect only until December 31, this year. That means, you must apply now (www.sba.gov) . There are dozens of websites to help you explore opportunities for greening any business, many want to sell you something. I suggest you start with your local utility, regulatory agency, and SBA websites.

Tutoring is a Win Win for Kids in Business

If you are a kid that is really SMART in certain topics then you can make money by offering tutoring to other kids that need some help with homework as well as help in test-taking strategies.

The first thing you need to do is decide on what subjects you would like to tutor in. Because you are young and do not have a teaching credential, you will have to show what you are capable of before people are willing to hire you. Keep records of your test scores to help to show your qualifications for tutoring. You may also consider putting together a blog or website detailing your tutoring service. Having your own YouTube channel with videos on you tutoring as well as on tips for mastering the subjects you tutor in would be very helpful. If your YouTube channel becomes popular you can apply to become a YouTube partner and generate income from advertisements placed on your channel. You can post adds on http://www.Craigslist.org as well as at all of the local schools and daycares. Be sure to include in your flyer a disclaimer stating that you do not represent the school district or they will not post your flyers.

For more information on how to get paid for tutoring as well as info on many other businesses perfect for kids be sure to visit http://www.RaisingBizKids.com

We’ve all been brought up with the idea that every spring we should clean our homes from end to end and freshen up for our health. This might have come from the idea that in spring, things are fresh and new and cleaning the home will renew your feelings about yourself.

1. Improve Your Health Without Diets Or Pills

Pollens, mold, and mildew spores are dumped into the air at incred-ible intensity. Pollutants from car exhaust, burning fields, and cigarette smoke were also dumped into the stagnant air. All this gunk drifted into your home and when you closed the house up, where do you suppose it’s been ever since? It got trapped in your home. Thanks to today’s air tight, energy efficient homes, your family and guests have been breathing that recycled air-garbage. 2. Your Home Is Your Personal Breeding Ground For Invisible Crit-ters And Varmints In addition to the air-garbage from outside, you have uncontrolled vermin inside. Too tiny to see, dust mites live in your carpet, upholstery, bedding and drapes by the millions. By now their dead bodies and dung are in your house by the billions. They live off your dead skin as do billions of bacteria in your home, including those that cause staph and strep infections. Ever wonder why so many people get strep as soon as it cools off outside? Now you know. Plus, fleas brought into your house last summer don’t die off like they do outside when it freezes. Bacteria and germs have been breeding in the warm fibers of your carpet.

3. Does Your Bedroom Smell Like A Gerbil? Here’s Why…

Besides being Harmful to our health, all the germs, bacteria and crit-ters that live off dead skin from us and our pets, stink. They eat skin and along with other excretions, put out tainted methane gas which smells bad. 4. Heavy Soil From Outside Sifts Deep Into Your Carpet Never To Be Seen Again Until the winter rains have washed the sand soil from the roads and sidewalks, heavy soils from outside are tracked onto your carpet, wiggle down deeper than your vacuum can reach and stay there, grinding your carpet down into worthless fibers. You’ll find them in your vacuum bag.

Choosing a company can be treacherous. I’ll tell you up front that my service is not for everybody, but here are some reasons to choose me: If all you want is a cheap, brush-the-dirt-off-the-sur-face cleaning, lots of companies can help you. Choose us when you want deep, thorough cleaning. We’ll give you the fluffiest, freshest, healthiest, longest lasting, clean carpets possible . . .

. . . Guaranteed!!!

Cleaning now, will get rid of sandy soils before they do lots of damage or get too deep.

5. Finally – Someone Who Can Remove Those Ugly Black Lines By The Walls, or Crevice of Steps I’ve had new clients call us to evaluate some embarrassing black lines where the carpet meets the wall and at the edges of steps and jagged lines under curtains. They told me no carpet cleaner could get them out and in some cases they had tried up to five different firms. But the black remained. I inspected these lines and found the cause to be an air filtration problem. With extra effort and knowledge on our part, the ugly black lines can be removed. I told the client this and they were apprehensive. I also told them if it didn’t come clean as I described, they would not have to pay us. How’s that for confidence? Yes, we cleaned the ugly black lines. Yes, our clients were happy. 6. Do-It-Yourself Folks Get What They Paid For… …Nothing The problems I have described here can’t be fixed very

well with any home remedy. Sure you can dust and do the basic cleaning just fine. But drapes, fine rugs and upholstery often cannot be safely cleaned except by a professional. Let’s face it. If those puny little cleaning systems could even come close to the effectiveness of a trained professional using a $55,000.00 steam cleaning system, no one would pay the money for them. But There’s Still One Thing You Should Know . . .

Green Energy By Geof Lambert Business and You

How Do You Start Your Own Business?

Is that idea and beginning holding you back from realizing your dream?

This month, we will talk about identifying opportunities. You should begin by “walking the aisles” I have a friend in the food business and that is how he begins his food ideas, by walking the aisles of the Safeway supermarket and identifying new food products/opportunities.

I begin to identify my next business opportunity by using the same method of “walking the aisles,” in the industry that I am considering; however, in my case, the “aisles” often begin with the internet. You’ll be noticing trends in products and more importantly, you’ll be noticing “gaps” these are gaps in the needs of consumers that haven’t been filled yet. These “gaps” can be tracked and they should reveal to you what you can develop and provide to the marketplace.

The next step is to do a competitive research on similar products. You can learn a great deal by studying your competition, but don’t kid yourself into believing that your competitors are all “bad” rather the opposite is true here. You can learn the size of the market, their distribution and the packaging of their product and come to understand the profile of your potential customer.

Finally, you must decide what piece of this you can do better; if the answer is “none” do something else.

Fuel Cells Provide Off The Grid Power Fuel Cells continue to evolve and become more viable for a large number of uses locally and globally. A local company, Altergy Systems, based in Folsom is pioneering many new uses of fuel cells. Think of a fuel cell as battery on steroids. It is a dynamo of stored energy that can sit quietly ready to spring into action at a moments notice to provide power where it might not have been previously been needed. This technology is especially useful in remote parts of the world the help build out wireless communications technologies, like cellular phone networks. The transmission towers of cellular networks do not need to be tied into the local wired power grid if their needs for energy can be met by fuel cells. Fuel cells tend to be a lot cleaner and greener then many alternative forms of localized energy like diesel generators. As the technology evolves the cost per unit of fuel cells continues to drop opening the door to newer and more exciting applications. Perhaps some day as they become smaller and more affordable fuel cells from Altergy Systems will be used in homes and offices around the world.

Investment Real Estate Group

No Money to Buy Property With? No more excuses! One of the biggest problems facing would-be Real Estate investors is not a lack of money, skills, or connections. In my opinion, the biggest obstacle many beginners have trouble with is their own lack of confidence and a pervasive illusion that the resources to invest successfully are always out of reach.

Don’t think you have the money for a deal? You do! To create money for a deal when you don’t have much, try notes. ‘Notes’ are essentially promises to pay a debt in a specific manner (payments.) In Real Estate, they are often secured by property. There’s a whole area of real estate that focuses on the buying and selling of notes alone! If you don’t have the money for a property, you can easily draw up a note for it and sell it at a discount to an investor - and poof! There you have your money for buying the property.

Another mainstream approach when lacking in funds is to ‘wholesale.’ Find a property, negotiate a good price, and essentially sell the contract to an investor for cash - you don’t need ANY money for that! The list goes on and on - there is virtually no problem that creativity can’t solve! So, get out there and make it happen -drop the excuses! Don’t sit on the sidelines. Chocolate Covered Coconut BallsMy great grandma Vera used to make

coconut balls every year to give as Christmas gifts. To this day, our family continues that tradition. We’ve modified her recipe over the years by by adding toasted slivered almonds. The sweet flaked coconut combined with toasted nuts make these coconut balls what an Almond Joy bar has always hoped to become.Ingredients:

2 cups Almonds, chopped or ground •1 14-oz. bag Flaked coconut, sweetened •3 cups (3/4 pounds) Powdered sugar •1 14-oz. can Sweetened condensed milk •1/8 teaspoon Salt •1/2 cup (1 stick) Butter, unsalted If using salted butter, omit salt•1 teaspoon Vanilla extract •3 cups Semisweet Chocolate Chips or Melty’s •3 tablespoons Vegetable shortening, unflavored •

1. In a large bowl, mix nuts, coconut, powdered sugar and salt.2. Add melted butter, milk and vanilla. Mix well. Refrigerate mixture for at least 30 minutes.3. Use a small ice cream scoop or tablespoon to form the mixture into balls.4. Roll the balls between your hands to form the ball shape. 5. Place balls on a cookie sheet lined with wax or parchment paper. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes.6. Mix chocolate and shortening in a metal or glass bowl. Melt chocolate by placing the bowl over a pan of simmering water. Stir occasionally until chocolate is completely melted; then remove bowl from heat.7. To chocolate coat the balls, drop 3-4 balls into the chocolate mixture at a time. Use two forks to fish out the coconut balls and allow the excess chocolate to drain off. A plastic fork with the middle two tines broken off works best for this step.8. Place chocolate coated balls on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper or parchment paper. Place finished balls in the refrigerator until well chilled. Store at room temperature for up to a week. For longer storage, coconut balls can be frozen in a freezer bag for up to 3 months.

Garlic and Sesame Green Bean SaladThis green bean salad sounds

“ok” on paper - but the flavor is incredible - the garlic and sesame oil combine to make it explode in your mouth. It’s also very easy to make.Ingredients:

1 pound green beans •1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper •(more if you like heat)2 tablespoons unseasoned rice •vinegar 2 large cloves garlic •1/4 cup olive oil •2 tablespoons sesame oil •2 cups cherry tomatoes halved•2 tablespoons crushed roasted peanuts •1/2 tsp Salt •1/2 tsp pepper •

1. Gather your beans into bunches and trim off both ends.2. Cook your beans. I prefer steaming. I put water in a pan and have a steaming basket. If you can’t steam you can boil, just don’t overdo it. Your beans should still be somewhat crunchy when they are finished either way you choose to cook them. It only takes five to ten minutes once you get the steaming going.3. While the steaming is going on, chop your tomatoes in half.Gorgeous. All chopped in half.4. Mince your garlic.5. When the beans are done, remove them from the heat. They’ll be bright emerald green and delicious.6. Give your beans a chill in the fridge.7. Crush the peanuts. Mortar and pestle works well, or you could just use a coffee grinder or food processor.8. Put all the other ingredients with the garlic and peanuts in a bowl.9. Whisk together.10. Toss everything together to coat evenly.11. Chill thoroughly. It really needs to be cold. Makes it taste really fresh.12. Plate your green bean salad and serve. Perfect!

Legal Ease

Words to Live By

Dealing with Legal Problems One of the reasons people hire an attorney is to obtain peace of mind, knowing that their particular problem is being handled by a professional with only the client’s best interests in mind. So once you hire an attorney and turn your legal problem over to him, let him do his job, listen to his advice and tone down the worrying: If you are doing all you can to solve a problem, there is no reason to bedevil yourself with it. That’s just hand wringing. Trust your attorney. It is interesting to note that in most polls, the public’s opinion of the legal profession is low, except for most people’s own attorney. Him or her they like. Something to do with problem solving and peace of mind.

Time Goes ByBe Aware: Have Daily moments of

Joy or Happiness. It’s wise to be thinking in the present not in the past or in the future. I go for a walk every morning; I’ve spotted bright vibrant colorful flowers. I enjoy my walk by. Then when I see a rose (red, pink, yellow) I smell it. That can make my day. I have wonderful memories of moments in my life.

Continued from front page... As the films continued, there was a touching moment when the film “Thugs Need Hugs” by DDSO E+ writing class started. There were so many hoots and hollers form the audience people experiencing the many thrills of seeing friends and family members in the movie and on the BIG screen. E+ writing class also wrote and produced “Are You My Girlfriend?” We all experience a since of Community and fun as each film came up on the screen. The crowd clapped and yelled for their productions. Each film touched a slightly different sentiment this year with love being a common theme. It wasn’t just romantic love, but the love of family and the appreciation of life. Films like “War at Home” touched

on the experience of a soldier returning home to friends and family after being in Iraq. “Butterscotch” was a poetic and clever take on the mysteries of life and love. “The Treasure Chest of South Sacramento” demonstrates personal growth through hardship and overcoming the status quo by looking inward at oneself. “The Golden Tree” by Gerald Martin Davenport delved into the history of the Sacramento region while bringing family together and “Little Thieves” reminds us to mind our manners and do what is right or else. The film “Three Words for Dacia” by Sean Stueve really took the crowd by surprise with it’s twist ending and modern noir styling. It is the only film to win both the Audience Favorite Award and the Producer’s Choice Award in the

festival’s 11 year history. Each filmmaker took the stage and was honored for their achievements and for winning a spot in the festival. After soaking in all the films the crowd moved into the lobby to enjoy a live performance by Sister Swing. We nibbled on some treats and sipped on wine in the Lobby of the Crest Theatre. The lively crowd enjoyed mingling with the filmmakers as everyone shared their experiences on their PCS (Place Called Sacramento) journey. By Michelle A. Barbaria

California Film FoundationIn 1993 a group of visionary writers and filmmakers began a historic journey. The vision was to create an organization that would educate, encourage and support the professional development of writers and film makers and their projects. It started as NorCal Film and has helped support area filmmakers and expands our region’s influence as the Capital of California Cinema. To that end, the foundation has worked to promote film as art and as an economic and civic benefit, developing year-

round screenings, community projects and special events. It is in fact the only not for profit organization in Sacramento dedicated to engaging its members and the general public in a lifelong, understanding of film and film culture.California Film Foundation (CFF) now supports film makers from other regions of California. But do not worry. The emphasis on development of talent in this region will not fade. If you are a screen-writer, director, producer or artist, you should consider becoming a member. If you are an avid lover of

Martin Anaya and Lorraine Beausheur

Charlie Holliday a great acting teacher surrounded by students

cinema you should consider joining this film society.CFF provides members with the opportunity to explore the crafts and business of writing, filmmaking and network with screenwriters, published authors, and film professionals. The members and speakers are a whose-who of Northern California Filmmaking including: On October 1st California Film Foundation members met & mixed with the crème of the crop of our regional

acting talent and enjoyed a stimulating conversation with Charlie Holliday. Charlie Holliday has more than 40 major media credits, including iconic films like Ed Wood w/ Johhny Depp and prime time TV classics like “ L.A. Law”. He has appeared in many national commercials, live theatre productions and has taught at the Academy of Art College and as a dialog/acting coach for the BBC. Currently he teaches the Mosaic Acting System and partners in Sacramento’s Media Casting Group.
