Central Heights in Service to America Central Heights is in the process of creating a section of the district web page as a means of honoring those Central Heights graduates, former students, teachers, and staff who have served our country. A page has been created to list current contact information for all CHS alumni/staff who are currently serving in the military. A separate page includes listings of any CHS alumni or former students, teachers, or staff who have served in the military in the past. A third page gives recognition to those who lost their lives in service to their country. Go to the CHS web page (www.usd288.org) and take the “Service to America” link on the left side. Submit any names and current address information to [email protected] or contact the high school office at (785) 869-3555.

SURE SIGNS OF SPRING!!! Did you think you would ever see it? When there was a foot of snow on the ground a couple of months of ago, it seemed like forever until Spring. But here we are, counting down the weeks to the end of school. There are signs of spring that are more reliable than the crazy groundhog from Pennsylvania and they are right here at Central Heights. One of the most certain signs that Spring has arrived is the kids. When I started this job, I got a lot of help and advice from faculty and staff. But there is one piece of advice that I will never forget. Beth Hixon, one of our kinder-garten teachers told me that the kids are baby barometers. At first, I didn’t really understand. It only took me a couple of weeks to figure it out. If you will notice, the kids’ behavior will change with the weather. They have been cooped up for months. When it starts getting nice outside and the tem-perature gets above 50 degrees, students will start getting a little louder at lunch and a little more rambunctious in the halls. You will hear the teachers and principals tell the kids to slow down or quiet down much more often. It’s got

to be a scientific fact. Kids are better at weather than Channels 4, 5, or 9. Another sign that spring is here is the appetites of the kids. Most of our kids eat just about everything. But I have noticed, especially in the elementary, that the kids are cleaning their trays almost completely. We rarely have leftovers here at school, but once in awhile, if we have a pan or two of left-overs from the day before, we’ll warm it up and put it out on the hot bar. We don’t have to worry about leftovers going to waste. They’re gone. Some of these kids can really eat! When you look out your window, you can see the evidence of spring. The grass is getting green, the buds on the trees, and the robin my granddaughter spotted. But take it from me: the be-havior of our kids is the best way to tell. They have more energy and seem to have a happier attitude. And best of all, they’re hungry.

(785) 869-3555 ext 426 Students “Break” Hearts?? On March 8, 2010 our Advanced Biology class got to get their hands dirty by dissecting hearts. They have been learning about the Circulatory and Respiratory system for some time now. Mrs. Stinebaugh thinks hands-on activities are the way to go and the students could not have agreed more. “I thought I would get sick, but it was really cool!” said Dallas King (Junior). There were four pork hearts and one beef heart in which the students identified the structures and then cut in to. “That is awesome!” said Josh Dewald (Senior). Near the end of the hour the class was excited about the Circulatory and Respiratory System and is now ready to tackle the eyeball in two weeks.

Librarian Shanna Richards in New York City I attended the “Picturing America in our Nation's Libraries” conference on March 4. I also was able to attend the “Celebration of Teaching and Learning” conference March 5-6. Over 8,000 educators attended this conference devoted to "the best practices, education philosophy, and trends in media literacy." Guest speakers were: Education Secretary Anne Duncan; Her Majesty Queen Noor, Lisa Henson, President of the Henson Company; Bobby McFerrin; and Queen Latifah. I also was able to attend a town hall meeting hosted by Meet the Press moderator David Gregory. During my trip to New York City, I stayed at the New York Hilton. In the “between” times I was able to get out and see the town. (Below are pictures of just a few of the places I visited. Can you guess where?)

Summer Driver’s Education Classes Set Driver’s Education will be offered this summer to any Central Heights student who has graduated from the 8th grade and is 14 years of age.

We will be offering a two-phase program: one phase is a minimum of four weeks in the classroom and passing that work at a predetermined competency. Phase two is behind the wheel training in which each student will receive a 10 lesson, 40 minute drive with all the competencies completed.

There will be one class offered, June 1 through June 28. In order to complete this much work in this time frame, all students must attend the classroom everyday and drive at his/her driving time. Students may also be dropped from class for behavior and/or discipline problems.

The classroom part of driver’s education will be from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Parents are responsible for getting their students to class at 8:00, and then picking them up at 10:00. The instructors will pick your student up at home to go driving during their assigned driving time and returning them home after their time. If the student drives after class at 10:00 the teacher will take them home after class.

Central Heights will have district-wide enrollment at 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. for all students who meet the requirements. The enrollment will be in the lunchroom on Saturday April 10, 2010. All students who plan to take driver’s education this summer MUST attend this meeting along with their parent or guardian. There will be no late sign-ups accepted.

Students will need $2.00 to cover the driver’s education permit and $100.00 to cover the cost of class fees for a total of $102.00. This is the policy that will be followed for refunds; the $2.00 fee is non-refundable since it is sent in to the state, and the $100.00 is refundable until the first day of class. Once class has started all fees are non-refundable for any situation or reason.

Out of District Students the cost is $2.00 to cover the driver’s education permit and $200.00 for class fees for a total of $202.00 It should be understood that a student cannot get his/her restricted license until his/her 15th birthday and he/she will need to keep their completion certificate until his/her birthday. NOTE 1. Any student who is taking medication must bring a written statement to the April meeting, stating that it is all allowable for them to drive a vehicle. 2. Any student who wears corrective lenses must wear them to the April meeting. 3. Bring a writing pen with dark ink to the meeting. 4. If you have any questions, contact Bud Welch at (785) 869-3809 ext. 105.
