The Greater Washington Section is in dire need of volunteers to fill the Treasurer’s duties, the Communications Chair (which includes editing and managing the production of our

newsletter), and the Concours Chair. We talked about this in our summer on-line newsletter. If no one comes forth soon to fill the Communications or Treasurer’s duties, we will be forced to hire someone. This will mean less money to put on events. If no one volunteers for the Concours Chair, we will not do formal judging at events, and we might not even conduct them. So PLEASE volunteer now for one of these positions or contact me to learn more about what is involved, if you think you may be interested. You will get all the help you need to learn these positions. (My e-mail address is [email protected])I recently had the good fortune to visit Rhinecliff, New York. It has been a while since I have driven in upstate New York. I had forgotten how beautiful it is and how much of it is sparsely populated. Also how many beautiful areas and places of “historic note” that are perfect for a destination rally and/or overnight stay. Tell me what you would like to do, and/or where you would like to go, sporting events, concerts, shows, dine and drives, winery tours, or visits to historic places. The key here is what can we do to get you to participate in an event? Better yet, lead an event, or participate or head up a committee. To keep this club thriving, we need participants and leaders. Finally, I want to remind everyone that our Annual MBCA | GWS Membership Meeting is on Saturday, October 15, at American Service Center, in Arlington VA. It is an opportunity for you to meet and hear from your officers and board members, and for us to listen to you. I encourage you to come out. That same day ASC Arlington is hosting a do-it-yourself (DIY) tech event where you can bring your car in and work on it in one of ASC’ s bays under the supervision of an ASC mechanic. ASC will also provide refreshments. Make sure you contact Warren Bain, our tech event chair, early on if you want to attend the DIY event. We want to give our friends at ASC a head count as soon as possible, so they can plan for the mechanics and refreshment. Please avoid last minute reservations. Jim Glenn

American Service Center, Arlington VAAll Day Event

An MBCA|GWS Do-It-Yourself Tech Session at American Service Center in Arlington VA is looked forward to for an entire year! Your chance to attend is

coming up Saturday, October 15 2011! This event is open to all MBCA members, no matter what section you belong to. The garage doors at our annual Do-It-Yourself event open at 9 am, but it is wise to get in line by 7:30 am to be assured a bay and a lift. Please limit your D-I-Y work to what you can handle in a four-hour session. We do not want anyone to miss out on this event, as space is limited, and is on a first-come-first-served basis.American Service Center is always a great host for this event. They open up their parts department and include an extra MBCA discount on what you buy, so you can run a tab on the parts you need. Many find they get more done than they originally planned. If you need special-order parts, contact the ASC Parts dept. prior to the event to make sure the parts are there for you. ASC welcomes us with a great continental break-fast, hot coffee, juices, bagels and donuts, to get your engines started. During lunch they put out a nice spread of sandwiches and drinks to keep you fueled up for your projects. Then in the afternoon there are cookies to give you that final push to get your project finished.

Having the right work environment makes a job go faster!Bring your OWN TOOLS! Neither ASC nor their technicians will provide tools. If you wish to bring your own parts and fluids, you can, or you may purchase them from ASC. ASC offers an extra MBCA Members-Only Discount on this day. It is a great time to stock up on parts you may need for other projects you have in mind. ASC Techs are on hand to give you advice and to assist you in your project. They ARE NOT there to do the work for you! If you have a tech that is of special help to you, you are welcome to tip them. This event is open to MBCA members only, no matter the section, the cost is $25 for the day, payable to GWS.This is a one-day event! Make sure your projects can be completed in a four-to-six hour time period. If you have any questions, contact Warren Bain. Pre-order any non-stock items that you may need prior to the event. To register, please fill out the registration form on the www.GWS-MBCA.org website and send it, along with your check for $25, to:

American Service Center, Arlington VACome and meet your fellow MBCA members to learn more about your vehicle, and enjoy good food at American Service Center Mercedes-Benz in Arlington VA.In a non-election year, this meeting is an educational session held during lunch at the Do-It-Yourself Tech Session at American Service Center in Arlington VA. In addition to hearing about the activities of the club, you will also get to hear from experts in motor oils and lubrication. Luis Castro Meirelles of Liqui Moly, and a Mobil 1 representative, will give you insight on lubrication. These panelists are well versed in the product, so give them some challenging questions! This is your chance to find out more about lubrication products that are right for the year and model of vehicle (not just Mercedes-Benz vehicles either – all machinery requires lubrication!)The Annual Meeting is free to attend. LeMons Racing Includes Four GWS Member Teams for 2011

Last year GWS had one team in competition in a LeMons Race! That team, ReVolvolution, went on to spark three more groups of GWS members to join the

madness that is known as LeMons (Lemons) Racing!ReVolvolution teammates Brad Blase, Mike Wirt, Pete and Barrie Gochman, and Matt Bridwell worked hard this year, an engine failure sidelined them early on. “Touch of Gray”, also running a Volvo, successfully finished the race. Team leader Greg Smith, with the help of his dear olde Papa, Jim, and fellow teammates Marty Gallagher, Eric Fullerton, Steve Spector, and Henry Harrell excelled in their first endurance race, June’s “Capitol Offense” at Summit Point, completing the entire race with no mechanical failures in 51st place. Unfortunately, this team was assessed a number of unjust penalties that kept it sidelined for more than two hours and caused a finish that was not representative of the team’s and car’s capabilities.

Rival team, Ziegel Scheißhaus Racing, did what others in the GWS club had hoped to achieve… - finish the race in the top half of the field. Despite their desire to field a winning car, the team placed respectably for their first race in 50th place with their converted ‘86 190e 2.3 and five slightly “touched” drivers Cindi and Rick Ellinger, John Heflin, Jonathan Tedder, and Ben Weber. The team converted a standard 190 2.3 into a fun-to-drive 16-valve Cosworth, vomit-inducing racing-machine. Fuel pumps turned out to the weak link, destroying five of them during

the race. The team got extra points for helping out competing teams running Mercedes-Benz’s showing that Mercedes-Benz owners stick together, even when competing against each other!A fourth team, captained by American Service Center’s Jack Rolo, also competed in an M-B 16 valve, but results were not available at press time. With this new-found hobby, several teams are hard at work preparing to head for Charlotte NC on September 25 for Charlotte Motor Speedway’s “Where the Elite Meet to Cheat.” - R. Ben Weber and Henry Harrell

On The Road Again!

StarTrails 2011

Two GWS members joined more than 70 MBCA members from around the country to take part in an all Mercedes-Benz off-road event high in the Rocky

Mountains. Attendees took both on-road and off-pavement drives, going on a number of very challenging and tire torturing mountain trails, boulders, and fording streams.Thirty-four Mercedes-Benz vehicles took part August 17 to 21, from as far away as New Hampshire and Florida. This was a chance to tour the San Juan mountains of Southwestern Colorado. Based in the quaint town of Ouray, also known as the Switzerland of the Rocky Mountains, this event showed everyone how capable the ML’s are off

pavement going on Green, Blue and Red trails such as Imogene, Corkscrew, California, Black Bear Passes and other legendary Colorado trails. Non-four-wheel-drive vehicles participated in tours on paved roads, such as the Million Dollar highway going to Silverton, Durango, Gateway, and Telluride, Colorado.GWS members Aaron Streater and Bill Hopper drove matching ‘98 W163 ML 320’s out and back, meeting with other MBCA members and friends along the way. This national event was a great time to socialize and try some different kind of driving. Off road driving is like autocross, just instead of 50 seconds, you get four hours of fun! - William West Hopper

MBCA | International Stars Celebrate Concours of America

On the first weekend in August, the International Stars organized events around the Concours of America held at Saint John’s (previously known

as Meadowbrook Concours). A great event and a great promotion for the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. This was an opportunity for MBCA to be a part of the display of Mercedes-Benz’s. Before this, MBCA had not had a significant presence at major national Concours d’Elegances. In addition, MBCA participated with Mercedes-Benz Financial in its separate “family day” that took place during the event.Saturday was a day for seminars at the St. John’s site as well as the MBCA Great Lakes Defensive Driving and Autocross held in a nearby stadium parking lot. GWS members Bobbie Wozney and Bill Hopper assisted Frank and Mary Alice Cozza who put on the MBCA’s Defensive Driving Schools for the club across the country. Both Bill and Bobbie took home first and second place trophies in the Mercedes-Benz Autocross, SUV class. The day of the Concours was typical of this past summer, very hot and very sunny. The St. John’s golf course location

offered plenty of shade and a wonderful setting to display a fine array of cars. Being held in the heartland of the USA automotive country, of course American Iron was primarily on display as well as a number of Indy Race cars. Manufacturers like Cadillac and Chrysler had extensive display booths, as did a number of other vendors including an excellent selection of artists offering automotive themed art pieces.MBCA’s tent was well placed in the shade beside more than 20 judged vintage Mercedes-Benz’s from around the country, including a number of MBCA member’s own cars! MBCA members also displayed their cars in the private Mercedes-Benz Financial area. Premier parking for non-display cars during the Concours was a nice addition. This event will be repeated again in 2012, so if you are interested in participating, contact Michael Selimi of the International Stars Section. This is a by invitation only Concours, and the Concours Committee works closely with members of MBCA in selecting fine examples of the marque. If you have an exceptional or rare Mercedes-Benz this may be an opportunity for you to show it a one of the top Concours d’Elegances in the country. - William West Hopper

KEYSTONE SECTION FALL MERCEDES-BENZ ONLY

AUTOCROSSSept. 25, 2011 - 9 am

Sun Motors - Mechanicsburg PASunday September 25 marks the return of the much anticipated Keystone Section Autocross. Sun Motors has graciously allowed us the use of their superb facilities. They have built a huge lot designed for autocross events. Please be there by 9 am and plan to start at 10 am. Volunteers would be appreciated to help set up the course and help with registration beginning at 8 am.The object of an autocross is to navigate your Mercedes through the course in the shortest time. Only one car is permitted on the course at a time. Each run through the course typically takes 40-60 seconds. There will be a practice session in the morning with instructors. After lunch, the official runs take place. This is a very safe and controlled environment to learn how to really drive your Mercedes!

All drivers must wear a SNELL 2000, or newer, helmet. Helmets that are just DOT approved are not permitted. A few of our members will have helmets to share, but these will be in limited numbers.Classes will be determined by the models that are entered. Up to 2 drivers are permitted per car. Mercedes-Benz history is rich with style, luxury, performance and prestige. Mercedes-Benz has built the most technologically advanced automobiles of their time, and they have been coveted by collectors and drivers around the world for decades.

These fi ne automobiles deserve only the best care and service by a master technician who understands Mercedes-Benz unlike any other. Mercedes-Benz of Tysons Corner is proud to offer you the opportunity to have access to such a source: Norbert Lamp.

Norbert Lamp started his career with Mercedes-Benz in 1960 in Germany working for Daimler-Benz AG. In the factory-owned repair facility he was selected to work on the 300SL Gullwing, 300SL Roadster and later, 230SL and 250SL. He was also one of the fi rst mechanics ever to work on the famous 600 limousine. During the next six years, Norbert became not only profi cient in the repair of these vehicles, but also logged more hours on these historic and signifi cant vehicles than probably any other specialist in the world today.

From 1966 to 1968 he worked for Mercedes-Benz of Canada in Toronto as a Mercedes-Benz Contract Technician. In the summer of 1968, on a sightseeing trip to New York and Washington, D.C., he fell in love with the United States and accepted a job at HBL in Fairfax, Virginia. Since 1969, Norbert has been working exclusively for Mercedes-Benz dealers in the Washington area, pleasing thousands of clients in various positions

such as Technician, Quality Control Manager, Shop Foreman and Assistant Service Manager. In addition to his unique professional credentials, Norbert has been a member of the Mercedes Benz Club of America since 1974 and has served as President/Vice President of the Greater Washington Section from 1986-1994.

Norbert Lamp brings his legacy from Mercedes-Benz Germany to you here in Tysons Corner today. As one of the leading experts in the fi eld of Mercedes-Benz mechanical restoration, he has assisted many Mercedes-Benz owners with the full mechanic restoration of their vintage classic Mercedes-Benz automobiles. We can say with confi dence that Norbert is the leading authority in the Mid-Atlantic knowing not only the intricacies of your vintage Mercedes-Benz but also having the resources and knowledge to restore your vehicle to an almost new condition.

Mercedes-Benz of Tysons Corner is proud of Norbert Lamp’s life-long dedication to customer satisfaction and his outstanding work product.
