Environment week at All Saints Primary SchoolTo support All Saints Primary School’s Environment Week, the team visited Year 4, 5 and 6 over two days.

During the workshop, the team helped Year 6 write an assembly on the ‘journey of a plastic bottle’, whilst Year 4 and 5 created ‘junk monster’ sculptures from plastic bottles.

Trafford turns over a new leaf for STEMThe One Trafford Partnership have a commitment to inspiring the next generation to take up STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) based subjects.

The Great Plastic Pick Up at St. Teresa’s Primary SchoolAs part of Keep Britain Tidy’s Great Plastic Pick Up campaign, the team visited Year 4 at St. Teresa’s Primary School in Longford. The class discussed what could happen to a plastic bottle when it is littered – for example, how micro-plastics could harm sea life, vegetation and ecosystems. Year 4 also learned about where different materials come from and why we must separate our waste.

The group also had a go at designing posters to show how to use a trio litter bin. The designs have been collected and put together to create one big poster to go on the side on one of the bin lorries this September.

As a thank you for their hard work, the school received a surprise visit from one of our bin lorries.

Altrincham Girls School drive their career in highwaysThe Highways Consulting team visited Altricham Grammar School for Girls in June as part of Young Enterprise’s open day. The consulting team spoke to 210 Year 10 girls, who were beginning their first GCSE exams. The team talked about their careers, their background and education and how to develop skills in and out of school. The team also helped with CV writing and how to gain work experience and where the latest opportunities are the highways industry.

One Trafford are United Against Dementia for Cupcake Day

Fundraising and sponsorship

With frosting, sprinkles, cream and jam at the ready, the One Trafford Partnership baked their best cupcakes for the Alzheimer’s Society Cupcake Day fundraiser.

The team raised an incredible £97.56 in just one day! To help raise money, staff baked (and bought) delightful cupcake treats, played ‘guess the flavour of the mystery cupcake’, and ‘how many cupcakes in the picture’.

The icing on the cake is that the money raised has been match funded by the Amey Foundation, taking the total to £195.12!

Alzheimer’s Society funds research into Alzheimer’s and dementia and providing support for sufferers and their families. Money raised during Cupcake Day will go toward further research projects like new and innovative drugs testing and specialist training for GPs and mental health support further research projects.

Before starting my apprenticeship with Amey in June, I was studying a Level 3 BTEC in Building Services at Trafford College. As I am not an academically led person and wanted a change of pace, I felt an apprenticeship was the best route to explore. Through my apprenticeship, I get to learn a little bit every day and develop key skills whilst earning at the same time.

Amey has a large fleet of vehicles, including specialised vehicles for different service areas, as well as everyday vans and cars. As safety is one of our top priorities, I am responsible for helping the Fleet and Transport Team ensure all vehicles are operationally sound and have all the correct paperwork.

One of my day-to-day tasks include ensuring all vehicles are accounted for when a driver scans a key back into the depot. Another part of my role is working with authorised drivers to make sure they are compliant with Amey’s policies. To do this I collate data like licenses and speeding checks onto a sheet to report back to my line manager.

Even though I have only been with Amey for a short while, I already feel settled. I’m currently being trained to use software such as CheckedSafe that allows us

to manage the fleet. I am surrounded with industry expertise which means I can comfortably ask questions and receive a well-thought-out answer. I’ve learned the importance of clear communication through simply learning how to construct emails and reports.

My next goal is to gain further independence and confidence in completing tasks without full supervision – this will give me better responsibility and accountability over my work. I would also like to explore different service areas within the One Trafford Partnership, like the Communications and Community team who regularly work with local groups. Once I have completed my two-year apprenticeship, I would like to progress within Amey, where I could be helping to run the workshop or manage the fleet. But before I get there, I think the team would like me to learn how to make a good cup of tea first!

My storyAndre Johnson – Transport Administration Apprentice

Bilal began his apprenticeship in Civil Engineering two years ago, having decided to change his career path from a BTEC in Science. Bilal has just passed all of his BTEC Level 3 in Construction and the Built Environment modules with top marks, earning himself a Distinction* and Distinction. Having now completed his apprenticeship, Bilal will now continue his development within the highways consulting team, securing his career at Amey. He will also be able to further his education at degree level.

Join Amey’s apprenticeship programme where you will gain recognised qualifications, develop valuable skills and earn a great salary on a permanent contract with paid holidays. When you’ve finished your apprenticeship, we’ve got a guaranteed job waiting for you.

A visit from a fanOne Trafford was visited by Max, aged 2 (and a half!) from Sale. Every week, Max shows his support for his favourite crew, Charlie Two, who have now become great friends with him.

As a thank you for his support, we invited Max and his family to visit the depot where he got to sit in his favourite bin truck, nicknamed ‘Charlie’.

Max and his family also received a tour of the entire depot where he got to see some of his other favourite vehicles like the loading shovel, specialised trucks and the large mechanical sweeper. Max told us how much he loves to recycle and explained which each household bin is used for.

If you too would like to visit the depot for a tour, you can tweet us at @OneTrafford.

WHERE DID WE GO?

Clean Air Day to Clean Air WeekAs part of Clean Air Day and the Greater Manchester Clean Air Pledge, we swapped out a diesel van for an electric Nissan van for week. To see how we could adapt, a number of departments within One Trafford trialled the electric alternative for their daily tasks.
