One Tree Hill Progress Association ~ President’s Report

Dear Residents,

Thank you to all those residents and visitors who supported our restricted ANZAC Day Dawn Service inside the Institute. We had some trepidation about conducting an indoor event, but the program was an outstanding success. We made good use of our webpage and Facebook pages to ensure everyone had an opportunity to register online before the event and we were pretty much booked out. Progress is incredibly grateful to the RAAF’s Air Warfare Engineering Squadron who so actively supported the Service.

We held our AGM on 13May21 and there were only two changes to the committee, with Steve and I swapping roles (President / Vice-President positions). The outgoing president thanked Heather and John Fischer for their great work in building the market up after our Covid-19 shutdown period last year. The market is becoming completely booked out and we are attracting visitors from far and wide. Steve also thanked Pat for her amazing contribution in managing the hundreds of changes and enquiries over the past year because of the hall closure and large number of Covid-19 restriction changes. Steve thanked Bindi for her continued awesome work in collating articles, editing and getting the Grapevine in print and online every month. The fact that Progress managed to hold its head above water financially over the past year is a credit to the tireless contribution of our volunteers. Thank you to all on the committee.

Unfortunately, we had low attendance at our AGM. The committee understands that we need to work harder to engage the local community, otherwise we may not survive as an organisation. It is our district and our town that we look after for the benefit of local residents and businesses and, also to attract visitors to the area. If you are a business owner or have a personal interest in getting involved in some of our community activities, we would love to hear from you or see you at our next meeting on Thursday 10Jun21 at 7:30pm.

Kind Regards,

Graham Watson President, One Tree Hill Progress Association, [email protected]

One Tree Hill CFS ~ May Report

After 3 slow months, May has been reasonably busy with 11 incidents including a spate of fires towards the end of the reporting period. The worst of these was a 4th alarm grass fire on the 19th of May in Purdom Road Gould Creek, just of Hannaford Hump Road. Originally paged as half an acre, this fire ended up burning nearly 8 hectares and took more than 80 fire fighters from 14 Brigades around 3 hours to bring under control. Although the fire was burning relatively slowly aided by a slight breeze, the very steep and rocky terrain (pictured) combined with a lack of tracks meant the fire was inaccessible to vehicles in many areas and had to be fought using hose lays. Clearly missing was the Air Support which would have made a significant difference in slowing the forward spread of the fire during summer months but are stood down at the end of the Fire Danger season.

Overall, one of the biggest fires we have seen in the area at this time of the year, and it was a difficult job done well by the crews, especially those from One Tree Hill, many of whom had been out in the early hours of the morning to attend a vehicle fire on Williams Road in Gould Creek. That was not the end of the action however with another large fire the next day in Humbug Scrub involving crews from OTH, Kersbrook and Dalkeith. This was not far from Attyford Road, which was the location of an out-of-control burn-off earlier in the month.

In addition to these fires, crews have attended grass and rubbish fires in Willison Road Gould Creek, Salisbury, Angle Vale and Blakeview, and anoth-er vehicle fire also in Gould Creek. While not all these fires were the result of out-of-control burn-offs, recent experience shows that although things are starting to green up there is still a significant amount of combustible fuel around that will burn if we are not vigilant.

Rounding out the month we had a clean-up for an oil spill on Hannaford Hump Road and a collision between a car and a kangaroo on Kersbrook Road. While it is unusual for an accident involving a kangaroo to result in a callout, in this case the car was severely damaged and was left blocking one lane of the road until it was able to be removed.

Have you cleaned your flue ?

Yes, it is that time of year again and many of us have already lit up our combustion heaters more than once this autumn to keep out the cold, but did you clean your flue? Flue and chimney fires are a common source of house fires during winter and are caused by a build up of combustible material inside the chimney which can easily be prevented with some simple maintenance. An-other common source of fire around the house is incorrect disposal of ashes which can sometimes still be smouldering. Plastic containers, including wheelie bins, and ashes are not a good mix and metal buckets are relatively inexpensive and may save a lot of problems.

Playford Council ~ Local Councillor's Report

Dear Fellow Ratepayers and Residents,

Did you engage and provide your feedback for the 2021/22 draft Annual Business Plan and Budget, and the 2021/22 draft Long Term Financial Plan that was out for consultation from the 3rd May to 30th May 2021?

A number of cost pressures will be incurred in 2021/22 including increased costs for insurance premiums, an income protection guarantee, superannuation guarantee and hard waste collection services, as well as our contribution to the State Government E-Planning Portal.

The draft Annual Business Plan and Budget provide details on how we will fund the inflationary costs for our existing services, new services and assets, and cost pressures as outlined above. These additional costs to our budget have been partially offset with over $1 million of Continuous Improvement savings as well as $0.4M of Growth Revenue. This has resulted in a proposed rate increase of 1.25% for 2021/22.

The Continuous Improvement savings over the last three years have saved around 4.737 million dollars which equates to an equivalent of a 6% rate rise. We need to continue a strong focus on our efficiency drive.

The issue of Illegal Dumping is budgeted to cost the City of Playford (the ratepayer) $1.320 million in 2021/22.

Included in the Annual Business Plan and Budget 2021/22 is the McGilp Reserve Upgrade. The project will only proceed in 2021/22 if grant funding is received. If unsuccessful, it will be considered again in future years. At the April 2021 Ordinary Council Meeting the Petition Seeking the Member for King, Ms Paula Luethen MP, to obtain the commitment of the State Government to allocate at least half of the funds towards the delivery of the entire upgrade of McGilp Recreation Park Redevelopment was noted by Council and forwarded to Ms Paula Luethen. I spoke to Ms Paula Luethen MP at the One Tree Hill Markets on the 1st of May seeking an update and have emailed her again on the 19th May 2021. Paula has been a fantastically engaged member delivering for many parts of King. Hopefully she can deliver for One Tree Hill and this much needed upgrade.

I’m still continuing to seek an update on the progress of the on-site backup generator to ensure the One Tree Hill township’s water supply. What will happen should funding not be obtained under the Australian Government’s Disaster Risk Reduction Program? I haven’t been able to receive any further updates on the progress during the last month and have again emailed our local MP.

Remember you can watch the Ordinary Council Meetings live! The recordings are maintained for twelve months on the City of Playford’s web page. It is most likely that the adoption of the Annual Business Plan and Budget will be at the Ordinary Council Meeting on the 22nd June 2021. Watch and see how you are represented by your elected members.

Best wishes and regards,

Family! Is anyone like me? …. we kind of love the thought of family get togethers and try to take a romantic view that we are all so loving, respectful and at peace in each other’s presence. Family trees bond us – nothing that can’t be said – nothing we would not do for each other … etc etc! Yes I love my family – my blood family and in-laws - mostly we are all pretty civil and kind to one-another but it is really interesting to note how often we can find family get-togethers a little on the frustrating side! Am I alone here?

I am pretty confident that every family has a story. It might be about a fall out – one of the siblings that no longer talks to the other, or it could be about some unresolved tension, or for other families they may have members who have struggled with the law, violence, drugs etc.. these can be things we don’t necessarily share more broadly but the family has this secret and this causes tension.

Many of us will behave differently during family time in comparison to our behaviour in the work place or with our friends. With family we might be more frank in our conversations, less tolerant of varying opinions and less respectful. Our workplaces will often demand a culture of ethical behaviour, codes of conduct and respectful relationships etc. On many occasions I have

found myself looking forward to time with my extended family – only to be met with kids squabbling and adults moaning about various points of difference! We can be so damn hard on each other in these settings.

Family Eggshells! (continued)

Article by Natasha Steen

Sometimes the earthy honesty of time with family is healthy. It might be the only avenue we have to tell someone we are struggling with something in life. The honesty of family time can also mean that we are moving aside from “keeping up appearances” and are being our true selves. These aspects of family time can be very nurturing.

With my counselling work I hear many stories about the tensions that play out in families. Often there is a need to support people to take time to look at what is important to them individually, what intersects with other family members and how they can find ways to compromise with a way forward. When I look at extended family tensions it makes me realise how well we do to even be able to live with a partner or immediate family. Relationships are hard work – they don’t just happen. We have to work through challenges, juggle things, communicate, plan ahead… so much maintenance .. yes!

Next time you see an extended family get together coming – do you need to consider “What issue do I really have with people being themselves and which bits do I need to just accept?”

Maybe it might all feel a bit better if I am not expecting anything to be a whole lot different. Maybe I need to just “Let it Be” as Surprise Surprise my family are still the same and guess what so am I! Albert Einstein once said “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”.

Here a few tips to consider when you prepare for family get-togethers:

Don’t expect people to change

Who other people are is not necessarily your problem – so do you really need others to change in order for you to live your life how you want?

Get the reasoning in your head straight – people in your family are unlikely to be deliberately seeking to hurt you or drive you crazy

Get up, stand up, be the moving part – ask yourself what you can control? Move away from conversations you don’t like or don’t take things on, change the subject.

Sometimes it can help to see family stuff as a bit of business not always pleasure – you can get other fixes in life in other ways than these get-togethers

Just keep your cool and manage your own perspective – yes it is amazing what a little self talk can do!

Just let a little crazy be! No family is perfect and we all have our stories.

Natasha is a local One Tree Hill resident, with her husband Craig, and 2 daughters - plus Dusty the Dog and our new four legged variety – Marlo the Puppy! Natasha - amongst other things - has her own Counselling and Coaching business. She has over 24 years of experience in this work and takes pride in supporting people to nurture their health by adopting simple things that really work to improve day to day living.

Ear infections are a common problem we see with our furry friends, especially those with long and fluffy ears. Dog and cat ear canals are shaped like a long L which makes it great for hearing but they can also collect debris and moisture. Bacteria, fungi, parasites and foreign material (like grass seeds) can cause inflammation and infection in the outer, middle or inner ear. They can cause discomfort and become problematic if left untreated.

Healthy ears will look pink, clean and are smell free. A pet suffering from ear infections can show one or more of the following symptoms:

Red & inflamed ears

Black/brown or yellow/green discharge

Strong, smelly odour

Constant ear scratching or head shaking

Head tilt

Extreme cases can even lead to loss of balance and loss of hearing

How are ear infections diagnosed?

A thorough clinical examination will assess that the ear drum is intact. The veterinarian may also take a small sample of ear contents and look under the microscope to determine the cause of disease.

How are ear infections treated?

Most ear infections are treated with ear drops applied directly into the affected ear. If there is a foreign body, such as a grass seed, or excess discharge in the ear canal, this will be removed before starting ear drops. Your veterinarian will recommend a tailored treatment plan to suit your pet's diagnosis.

How can you prevent ear infections or re-occurence?

Check on your pet's ears regularly

Watch out for wax build up or foreign bodies like grass seeds

Avoid excess moisture & gently dry your pets ears with a soft towel after swimming and bathing

Avoid excessive cleaning

Although ear infections are common and often reoccur, you can keep your pet's ears clean and comfortable with the help of your veterinarian. If your dog is showing any signs of ear infections, it is best to seek treatment right away to make sure the problem does not become too serious.

What’s Flowering In My Garden?

Although we are coming to the end of Autumn, the cold nights and cool overcast days indicate that Winter is not too far away. Some good rainfall is still desperately needed to replenish our dry soils. There are a few flowering plants but they are all just waiting for a good drink before opening their flower buds.

Corymbia citriodora is in flower and the nectar loving birds such as the Rainbow Lorikeets, White Naped Honeyeaters and New Holland Honeyeaters and bees are all enjoying scrambling to enjoy their share of the lemon scented flowers. It grows with a tall erect strong pale cream to grey to pink trunk that supports a canopy of branches that, in turn, sup-port many large drooping bunches of small lemon scented flowers that are revealed after the reddish brown bud caps drop, making a colourful carpet underneath the tree. Some trees have lighter and/or darker blotches on the trunk. Corymbia citriodora, being a large tree when mature, should only be grown in parks or reserves but not in your average suburban block as it can reach 50 meters in height. There are many to admire when travelling along the southern end of Phillip Highway, Elizabeth. These mature trees , planted about 50 or 60 years ago are growing well in the median strip.

Corymbia citriodora is large, it’s elegant, it’s ornamental, it’s evergreen, it’s graceful, it’s stately, it’s impressive . It is truly, one of Australia’s most stunningly beautiful big trees.

Just beautiful.

The Steen family were proud to take a little time to do something different this Mother’s Day…..Lucy, Lily, Craig and Natasha set up a Flower Stall in front of their One Tree Hill home for the morning. They

did this using flowers grown in their garden – beautiful pink proteas were a feature! The family decided they wanted their little initiative to raise money for Parkinson’s SA. The morning sales went really well and they were delighted to raise $360.

Craig’s father – Roger Steen - faces the challenge of living with Parkinsons. Roger is now in a nursing home and while movement and lack of independence are a source of frustration, he is overall in good health. The Steen family are grateful for the commitment that Parkinson’s SA together with Hospital Research make to undertaking research and improving the lives of people with Parkinsons.

On a weekend in mid May, a patrol of 6 young cub scout lads (Max, Aiden, Jaxon, Archer, Cody and Henry) set off for their senior cub camp with their cub leaders at Cromer Shed in Mt Crawford Forest. Senior cub camp is a unique experience provided for them to solidify their camping skills using teamwork, and increase their independence

in readiness for moving up to the scout section. For this weekend, cubs have a meeting to prepare a menu and equipment list a week before the camp.

On the day of the camp, they pack gear into the trailer, arrive at the camp site in the dark (and in this case, rain!) and set up tents on their own, with a few tips from the leaders. For 10 and 11 year olds this can be quite challenging, but working together, persistence and resilience are the keys to success. This is what they are trained for. But there’s more...

During the weekend they also hiked to the top of Mt Pleasant on an 11km loop hike, they learned about gas cooker and BBQ safety, prepped and cooked all meals, and cleaned up with all the dishes to keep a clean and tidy camp kitchen. Campfires, stick cubbies, some card games, breaking camp and full trailer unload completed the experience, and all in all it was a great weekend for all of us. These boys nailed it and they should be proud of their achievements. In August we will have another Senior Cub Camp - but that one will be all girls - completely different! Usually they are mixed but it’s jus the way the ages have worked out this year!
