Historical New York Times

• Find New York Times articles (and images) from 1851-2003– Search for a name or keyword– Search by date (or dates)

• Notes to remember– Search the first day after an important event– Reorganize the search by date to get better results– Click “Page Map” to get a full view of the page of a particular

article, which clickable images of all the other articles on that page-------------------------------------------------------- Look up the article from the sinking of the Titanic, which

occurred on April 14, 1912

• A conglomeration of history databases:– American History Online, African-American History Online,

American Women’s History Online, Modern World History Online, American Indian History Online, Ancient and Medieval History Online

• Includes text (mostly from encyclopedias) images, videos, maps, and more

Michigan Death Records (1897-1920)

• Includes searchable, scanned images of Michigan death records between 1897 and 1920

• Perform an advanced search to search by year or by place of death when you don’t have enough information about a person

to find out the day that Martha Baldwin died

Social Security Death Records• Find the death records of a US citizen• Look up an individual by name, birth and death

dates, last residence, social security number, and the age of death (exact or within a range)

• You will find some different individuals from what you find in the Michigan Death Records

• Includes census records, passenger manifests, obituary collections , draft registration cards, and other government documents

• Search a variety of types of records for people and places: Census Records, Books, PERSI, Revolutionary War, Feedman’s Bank, U.S. Serial Set

• Try searching PERSI for your family’s hometown – find local histories and genalogies.

• Burton Historical Collection at the Detroit Public Library

• Local Churches (which keep excellent record)– Rabbi Leo M. Franklin Archives (Temple Beth El)– Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit has an Archives

Office, or many older records are on microfilm at the Burton Historical Collection

– Family History Centers of the Church of Latter Day Saints (Check the LDS Temple in Bloomfield Hills)
