Priority Project Updates

Taking the law to where it’s neededIn June 2019, Legal Aid WA set up a network of ten Virtual Offices around the State. The Virtual Offices refer to screens with cameras installed in community centres staffed by a local coordinator. They enable people to be face-to-face with a Legal Aid lawyer through the technology. The Virtual Offices are in Mandurah, Joondalup, Midland, Leonora, Esperance, Armadale, Karratha, Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek and Meekatharra.

New Health Justice PartnershipIn April 2019, Legal Aid WA started a Health Justice Partnership with Next Step Drug and Alcohol Service. This new service involves a Legal Aid lawyer being on site one day a week at this health provider. Social workers and treaters are able to seamlessly refer patients with legal problems to our lawyer. This partnership enables us to provide timely legal help to hard-to-reach clients who would otherwise not access our services.

Joined up service on elder abuseOn 21 June 2019, Legal Aid WA signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Advocare who operate the Elder Abuse Helpline. This alliance gives the Elder Abuse Helpline the capacity to offer legal advice on seniors’ rights through warm referrals to Legal Aid WA. It also enables Legal Aid WA to offer our callers information, support, advocacy, and social support services through warm referrals to the Elder Abuse Helpline. Having ‘joined-up’, both organisations can now offer a wraparound service.

Priority Project Updates

On 28 June 2019, our Blurred Borders legal communication tool won Gold at the Institute of Public Administration Achievement Awards. The Institute described Blurred Borders as representing best practice in collaboration between government and non-government organisations. Since we launched this legal communication tool on 19 July last year, Blurred Borders has made a tangible difference to Aboriginal people who don’t speak English as a first language. It has helped them to understand court orders and to better comply with their conditions.

And one more thing……
