The ONLITE range Complete with safety

Group and central battery sys-

tems meet extremely exacting

safety, functionality and flexibility

requirements. The emergency

lighting system can be connect-

ed to the lighting control system

so that it forms a single func-

tional unit with the general light-

ing system. Every escape sign

luminaire and every emergency

luminaire can be individually

controlled. This plus the major

advantage of central monitor-

ing – the majority of control and

documentation tasks are auto-

mated.

Ideal for small to medium-sized

projects: this self-contained

emergency lighting system

requires little design and instal-

lation but stands out thanks to

extreme intrinsic safety. A raft of

intelligent functions makes for

convenient operation and cuts

operating costs.

Functional design and high-

grade materials facilitate the

integration of emergency

lighting in architectural terms.

Almost every Zumtobel luminaire

can be supplied as a prewired

emergency luminaire.

Which is the right emergency

lighting system? Besides the

size of the building, customer-

specific requirements also play

an important role. Zumtobel

offers expert professional assist-

ance in choosing a system and

can provide know-how and

manpower for designing and

commissioning. The experts’

skills and many years of experi-

ence ensure the right solution is

chosen.

Page 5: Onlite

Almost every Zumtobel general

lighting luminaire is also avail-

able as an emergency luminaire.

This means that separate emer-

gency luminaires are no longer

needed, and makes it possible

to preserve the consistent feel

of a room. Precise planning

gives peace of mind that the

lighting result achieved in the

event of an emergency will sat-

isfy applicable regulations and

allow safe evacuation of danger

spots.

Besides visual integration of

emergency lighting, functional

integration in particular offers

additional benefits. These range

from individual addressing

through to daylight-based con-

trol of all luminaires. Integrated

emergency lighting uses the

same control systems as light-

ing management and therefore

offers perfect functionality.

All ONLITE systems support

central monitoring of emergency

luminaires, which minimises

operating costs. All specified

function tests and service life/

annual system tests are run

automatically, and the system

produces a test log book and

outputs an alarm when an

error occurs. Remote control

and remote maintenance offer

additional convenience. This

way, ONLITE systems ensure

maximum operational reliabil-

ity, easing much of the burden

of responsibility placed on the

operator.

In situations where lofty ambi-

tions are to be fulfilled, the

requirements placed on every

component without which a

room impression and ideal

working conditions are unimag-

inable are equally exacting: light

as an integral, interdisciplinary

safety factor. Most luminaire

manufacturers concentrate

exclusively on general lighting,

the lighting control sector takes

care of lighting management,

and other sectors offer emer-

gency lighting. Zumtobel cus-

tomers can rely on skills which

encompass all these areas for

project-oriented lighting solu-

tions, enabling individual appli-

cation-specific implementations

to build into a highly functional

across-the-board system.

A single unit: general light-ing and emergency lighting

Nothing conspicu-ous catches the eye – and that's the whole point. The emergency luminaires are unrec-ognizable as such and look like part of the general lighting. Noth-ing interferes with the room impression, and the architecture can exert its full effect unchallenged. Unobtru-sively designed illumi-nated escape signs only attract attention when there is an emergency situation.

ARTSIGN A little design sensation

ARTSIGN is the smallest escape

sign luminaire in the world.

About the same size as a post-

card, this architects’ favourite

blends harmoniously into any

room, has a recognition range of

15 m and despite its size meets

all the standards. It will operate

reliably for many years without

requiring the slightest atten-

tion. High-power LEDs ensure

a long service life and complete

maintenance-freedom. The very

latest lighting technology and

a high efficiency level make it

possible to backlight the escape

route sign at a luminance level

in conformity with relevant

standards of 200 cd/m².

Design: Matteo Thun

COMSIGN Lightweight and transparent

COMSIGN stands out thanks to

its lightweight, transparent look

and radiant backlit acrylic panel.

Its cover, with the escape route

symbol, has a recognition range

of 26 m and is made of die-

cast aluminium – the housing

is made of polycarbonate. The

highly uniform backlighting is

further evidence of high quality.

COMSIGN is easy to install in

any situation and is compatible

with the TECTON continuous-

row lighting system. This makes

it ideal for use in prestigious

interiors such as foyers, offices

or even retail areas.

PURESIGN Innovative LED technology

A special 3 mm thick aluminium

frame, a shallow mounting

height and a recognition range

of 13 m are among PURESIGN’s

external features. The interior

of the escape sign luminaire

accommodates the very latest

LED and lighting technology.

These ensure perfect back-

lighting of the pictogram with

extremely high uniformity and

luminance of at least 200 cd/m².

In the case of the luminaire for

surface mounting on walls, an

additional LED spot directed

towards the escape route

increases the visibility of escape

doors. Various installation

options are further evidence of

its wide variety of applications.

ECOSIGN The all-rounder

The all-rounder in the ONLITE

range combines all these prac-

tical qualities. Whether under

harsh conditions or in unpro-

tected areas – ECOSIGN is

equipped for any kind of use

thanks to its high degree of

protection. It is flexible in every

respect and TECTON-compat-

ible. Its plus points are rounded

out by a 30 m recognition

range, and maintenance without

the use of any tools.

ECOSIGN Safety, an emergency

luminaire with outstanding tech-

nical lighting features for illumi-

nating escape routes, is a par-

ticular highlight of the ECOSIGN

product line.

Methods of connection

A wide variety of methods of

connection guarantees maxi-

mum flexibility. Luminaires can

be switched individually or as a

complete circuit. With the indi-

vidual method of connection, it

is possible to specify, for every

individual luminaire, whether it

is to be set up in maintained

mode, non-maintained mode or

switched via any of the switch-

ing inputs. In addition, every

EPS 360 Controller has a built-

in automatic staircase lighting

function.

Programmable test cycles

The date and time of day of all

function and service life/annual

system tests can be user pro-

grammed. This prevents tests

being performed at inopportune

times, e.g. while a film is being

shown in a cinema.

Electronic test log book

All function and service life/

annual system tests are logged

and stored in the electronic test

log book of the EPS 360 Con-

troller for at least three years.

The test log book can be read

out at any time via an infrared or

RS 232 interface.

Flexible illuminance levels cut costs and reduce environmental impact

In the case of conventional

emergency lighting solu-

tions with non-programmable

emergency lighting levels,

output in emergency mode

is identical to that in normal

(mains operation) mode. This

requires relatively high bat-

tery capacities and results in

higher energy consumption.

In most cases, 10 % of the

lumen package of the mains

lighting is sufficient to guaran-

tee minimum illuminance when

operating in emergency mode.

The programmable emergency

lighting level minimises system

costs because sets of batteries

and central installations can be

designed considerably smaller

and this also helps reduce envi-

ronmental pollution.

Comparison: conventional solution

ONLITE central LPS with programmable emergency lighting levels

Emergency lighting level at the

push of a button

The emergency lighting level is

set on the touch-sensitive dis-

play of the EPS 360 Controller.

These values, based on pho-

tometric calculations, can be

entered one circuit at a time or

for each individual luminaire.

Zumtobel luminaires with DALI

dimmable ballasts (luminaire

names starting with LDE) allow

individual definition of the dim-

ming level in emergency oper-

ating mode. The emergency

luminous flux of emergency

luminaires can be reduced

gradually down to 5 % of the

normal lighting.

Notes:

• Only ONLITE Powerline

de vices and the control gear

to be controlled may be

connected to the EPS 360.

“External” consumers or inter-

ference sources must not be

connected to the Powerline

network.

• Band-stop filters or filters are

not permitted in the Powerline

domain.

• Where the length of parallel

cable runs cannot be restrict-

ed to 10 m, cables which are

parallel must be spaced at

least 5 cm apart.

• The maximum cable length is

300 m (1.5 to 4 mm2).

Individual monitoring of luminaires

With individual monitoring of

luminaires, there is an intelligent

monitoring module inside every

emergency luminaire which

communicates with the cen-

tral emergency lighting power

source via Powerline. Every

emergency luminaire is assigned

a unique luminaire address at

the time of commissioning. This

makes it possible to display the

status of each individual emer-

gency luminaire on the ONLITE

central LPS.

Monitoring of circuits

An EPS 360 Controller which

measures the power output

into its output circuit in order to

ascertain whether all the lumi-

naires in the circuit are oper-

ating correctly is a distinctive

feature of this circuit monitoring.

In the case of circuit monitoring,

only circuit-wide switching is

possible.

Benefits• When an emergency

luminaire fails, the location of the faulty luminaire is pinpointed.

• Emergency luminaires in one output circuit can be individually configured to various methods of connec-tion.

• Emergency luminaires can be integrated into DALI lighting control.

• Emergency lighting level can be pro-grammed via central emergency lighting power source.

Benefits• Luminaires do not

have to be equipped with add-on modules.

• Any load suitable for AC/DC may be con-nected.

Integration into a lighting management system

The DALI interface ensures that

emergency lighting can be inte-

grated seamlessly into general

lighting. DALI commands are

converted to Powerline signals

and are sent to the emergency

and escape sign luminaires. This

way, every luminaire can be indi-

vidually controlled and included

in automation processes.

LUXMATE lighting control sys-

tems make it possible to fully

exploit a whole raft of advan-

tages offered by ONLITE central

LPS.

The ONLITE GO-ON package

visualisation module provides

users with a convenient facil-

ity for monitoring their entire

ONLITE emergency lighting sys-

tem from one central location.

Perfectly planned monitoring

systems link up the group or

separate battery systems in one

or more buildings into an intelli-

gent information network, which

delivers information on the sta-

tus of the emergency lighting

system round the clock.

ONLITE central CPSProject-specifically customised, networked central battery system

The modular design of ONLITE

central CPS guarantees a

tailor-made solution for any

project and a significantly opti-

mised cost/functionality ratio.

Every ONLITE central CPS

offers full functionality in order

to comprehensively meet the

requirements placed on a cen-

tral battery system using as few

components as possible. No

additional software or modules

are needed.

There is no need to fit any

separate components in the

luminaire because every DALI

luminaire can be used as an

emergency luminaire which can

be individually monitored and

controlled.

This also reduces effort on

commissioning, inspecting and

maintaining the system. A large

removable Touch PC is the core

of the system. It enables, for

example, straightforward com-

missioning by one person, or

neatly laid out, easily manage-

able display of the system’s

status.

Every DALI luminaire in Zumtobel’s standard product range is an emergency luminaire

Every DALI luminaire can be

used as an emergency luminaire

which can be individually moni-

tored. No additional modules

need to be fitted to achieve this,

and functionality of the general

lighting system is completely

preserved.

This simplifies project planning,

reduces both costs and effort

and makes choosing lumi-

naires easy. Delivery times for

emergency luminaires are short

because they are luminaires in

the standard product range.

Less effort on design

Monitoring of circuits or moni-

toring of individual luminaires

may be useful depending on the

particular application.

ONLITE central CPS caters for

specific circumstances; every

station can be designed with

both methods of connection.

Its modular system design even

makes it possible to mix mod-

ules with circuit monitoring and

modules with individual moni-

toring of luminaires within one

installation.

One to three bays are available

for monitoring modules depend-

ing on the design of the relevant

distribution cabinet. These bays

can either be fitted with mod-

ules for circuit-wide monitoring

or individual monitoring of lumi-

Monitoring of circuits

Individual monitoring of luminaires

Circuit monitoring is used pri-

marily in extensive buildings

which have consistent lighting

concepts. Industrial factory

buildings and parking garages

are typical examples of such

buildings. Even a circuit error of

10 % can be localised in final

circuits which incorporate lumi-

naires of similar wattages.

Individual monitoring is preferred

in buildings such as shopping

malls, hospitals or museums

where there are a variety of

lighting systems. Addressable,

switchable and dimmable

standard luminaires with DALI

ballasts are used. Here too, it

is possible to set the desired

emergency power level without

any additional components.

Besides conventional DC emer-

gency operation, the built-in

security function also trips in AC

emergency mode. This guar-

antees consistent functionality,

even if the control cable is inter-

rupted or short-circuited.

Using LUXMATE LITNET, the

leading lighting system which

is used in large office buildings

in particular, allows the user to

dispense with a large proportion

of ONLITE central CPS hard-

ware and software for luminaire

monitoring. A system with circuit

monitoring is sufficient; indi-

vidual monitoring of luminaires is

taken care of by LITENET.

This way, every emergency lumi-

naire need only be addressed

once at the time of commis-

sioning.

• Straightforward design and

commissioning

• Use of standard luminaires

with electronic ballasts

• Lower investment costs but

restricted functionality

• Maximum safety

• Lower operating costs

• Maximum functionality

• Maximum convenience and

flexibility

• Many ONLITE central CPS

functions are already incor-

porated in the LUXMATE

LITENET lighting management

system

• Easy commissioning

Emergency-offBy pressing the emergency-off button, the complete ONLITE central CPS system (including all substations) is disconnected from power supply. This ensures that emergency forces can safely do their job. The internal +24 V supply is carried via an NC switch (emergency-off) and connected to the S5 terminal (2 x 1 terminal strip at the main station), while the configuration is adjusted to the emergency-off function using the touch PC.

Potential-free inputs

Every ONLITE central CPS main

station and substation provides

eight digital potential-free inputs

as standard. The first input (S1)

is designed as a critical circuit

and, as a rule, is used for the

phase detector loop. Several

phase detector loops or other

potential-free switching inputs

can be parameterised. Each of

the switching inputs is connect-

ed to the internal 24 V reference

potential. Eight other potential-

free inputs are optionally avail-

able for each ONLITE central

CPS station.

Individually monitored

Regardless of circuit monitor-

ing or individual monitoring of

luminaires, individual emergency

and escape sign luminaires are

switched by potential-free inputs

or permanently used as main-

tained or non-maintained lumi-

naires. Built-in functions such as

staircase lighting or switching by

variable timers are available.

Emergency lighting as an isolated solution

Page 40: Onlite

A standard built-in phase detec-

tor monitors the general power

supply system. If this power

supply fails, the DALI circuit in

question is short-circuited. All

DALI emergency and escape

sign luminaires change to sys-

tem-failure level and immediately

switch to the configured value.

This security function is exe-

cuted without communicating

with the emergency luminaires.

This system topology is based

on an ONLITE central CPS

with circuit-monitored mod-

ules (S). All luminaires (general

and emergency luminaires) are

metallically separated from one

or more common DALI chains

and networked to the LAN

hardware (Ethernet, TCP/IP) via

the LITENET netlink. All status

in formation is available via the

LUXMATE LITENET network.

The ONLITE central CPS oper-

ates completely independently,

and autonomously forwards

messages concerning bat-

LITENET via the Ethernet net-

work.

System project planningStep-by-step guide to the perfect lighting solution

The entire design process is

broken down into individual

design steps in order to ensure

a target-oriented approach

when designing emergency

lighting systems. This is a

tried-and-tested strategy for

arriving at the optimum solution.

Step 1 Do photometric calculations for escape routes

Define Ballast LumenFactor (BLF) percentage as basis for output of each emergency luminaire

Plan the locations of escape sign luminaires

Define the circuits in each fire compartment

Add up power output (PAC and PDC) of all emergency and escape sign luminaires for each output circuit

Determine battery capacity depending on duration of battery-powered operation
