Forestry and Forest

Operations Specialist

Our On-the-ground Approach

Level I: Technical Enquiries

Up to ½ day of complimentary service in response to telephone and e-mail enquiries

about forestry or wood products operations, products, and markets.

Level II: Direct Technical Support (DTS) Project

Up to five days of free technical service to assist SMEs in developing new products and

processes, and, in implementing new technologies.

Level III: Process & Product Development (P & PD) Study

More in-depth project to pursue new business ideas through technical investigation and

market research. Upon approval by the Ontario Steering Committee, studies can be

funded up to 75% and a maximum of $20,000.

In Ontario, FPInnovations industry advisors have worked to provide technical

support at the following levels:

UAS use in forestry

UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems)

Needs

▫ Planning, prescriptions, layout, monitoring and compliance

▫ Operational planning and reporting at the block level

▫ Niches:

Timely; low cost; autonomy; safety, lack of field labour

Approach

▫ Identify applications and expected ROI

▫ State-of-the-art review

▫ Validation based on total workflow (cost/benefits of potential applications compared to current)

Sawmilling - Challenges & Opportunities

Opportunities

• Overall increase in demand globally for

construction products

• General trend toward green and energy

efficient products

• Wood is the only renewable building

material

• New types of construction can be

competitive with concrete and steel

• “Green” opens the door to many markets:

• Still need to be competitive in terms of

price and performance

Development of a green chemistry

sector

• Conversion of cellulosic sugars and lignin

from sawmilling by-products

Competitiveness of eastern sawmills

• Historically

• High cost of supply was offset by price of wood

chips

• Now

• The cost structure is not competitive and

reduces the ability of industry transformation

Sawmill of the future

Processes designed for commodity and niche markets

Decision and optimization based on the internal log fiber attributes

Delayed product decision in order to optimize lumber value in function of market needs

Various shapes and sizes of pieces to maximize solid wood products
