Session-1: Professor Hossam Gaber, Director of APEL-

Advanced Plasma Engineering Lab, Ontario Tech

University, Canada

Dr. Gabbar is a full Professor in the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) in the Faculty of

Energy Systems and Nuclear Science, and cross appointed in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied

Science, where he has established both the Energy Safety and Control Lab (ESCL), Smart Energy Systems

Lab, and Advanced Plasma Engineering Lab. He is the recipient of the Senior Research Excellence Aware

for 2016, UOIT. He is leading national and international research in the areas of smart energy grids, energy

safety and control systems, nuclear-renewable hybrid energy systems, and waste to energy using

advanced plasma technologies. Dr. Gabbar obtained his B.Sc. degree in 1988 with first class of honor from

the Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University (Egypt). In 2001, he obtained his Ph.D. degree from

Okayama University (Japan). From 2001 till 2004, he joined Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan), as a

research associate. From 2004 till 2008, he joined Okayama University (Japan) as a tenured Associate

Professor, in the Division of Industrial Innovation Sciences. From 2007 till 2008, he was a Visiting Professor

at the University of Toronto. He also worked as process control, safety, and automation specialist in

energy and oil & gas industries. He has more than 220 publications, including patents, books / chapters,

journal and conference papers. He is the founding Chair of IEEE NPSS Chapter in Toronto Section, founding

chair of international workshops on SPANS-Symposium on Plasma and Nuclear Systems, and the founding

chair of international workshops on Real-time Measurement Instrumentation & Control (RTMIC).

Session-2: Professor Sing Lee, Director, IPFS; Emeritus

Professor, University of Malaya, Malaysia

Sing Lee received Ph D (1970) from the Australian National University. He was Head and Professor,

University of Malaya and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, Alexander von Humboldt

Research Fellow , Nuclear Research Establishment, Juelich, Germany, Commonwealth Staff Fellow,

Imperial College, London and UNU Special Fellow, Flinders University, Australia.

He was Founder President (now Advisor) of AAAPT, Assoc Director of AAAPT Research and

Training Center CAS, Beijing. He was Far East Representative of ICTP, and is actively an

implementor of South-South technology creation and transfer. He was Founder Member of the

International Scientific Committee of the International Centre for Dense Magnetised Plasmas

(ICDMP) Warsaw. He has supervised many PhD theses and Fellows of UNU, ICTP and TWAS. He

was a Director, ICTP Spring College in Plasma Physics, Assoc Editor, Journal of Fusion Energy and

has been on the international organizing committee of international conferences including

International Congress on Plasma Physics.

He models the radiative plasma focus, supervises PhD students, is founding Director of Institute for

Plasma Focus Studies (www.plasmafocus.net) and has run international workshops on numerical

plasma focus experiments for some 130 scientists from 17 countries. More than 31 plasma groups,

including 6 in the US have used the Lee Model code in their experiments design and research.

Professor Sing Lee is actively associated with plasma research in Malaysia, Singapore, Syria, Iran,

Poland, Italy, Russia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Egypt, Khazhastan, Canada, Thailand, Indonesia,

USA and Turkey, and is consulted by plasma focus groups from all over the world. His latest work

(for example ‘radiative collapse’) has revealed insights into key plasma focus mechanisms providing

guidance to the research community in the development and applications of the plasma focus as an

alternative fusion energy device.

Session-4-A: Professor Dr. SAW Sor Heoh, Vice Chancellor,

First City University College, Malaysia

Professor Dr Saw is Vice Chancellor and Professor of First City University College in Malaysia.

She has a first class Bachelor of Science (Hons) Physics, and a PhD in Plasma Physics from the

University of Malaya. She has an M. A. in Education Management from The University of

Nottingham, United Kingdom.

Prof Saw has extensive research experience. She has developed and coordinated a total of 32

plasma research projects, half of these are with partners from all around the globe. She has a

range of high impact publications in the research field of plasma focus and has organised and

presented several online and face-to face workshops on Plasma Numerical experiments to

international researchers in many countries including the USA, Turkey, Nepal and Italy.

As an internationally renowned academic figure, Prof Saw was awarded an Honorary Life

Membership of the Turkish Science and Research Foundation in 2009 and is the Co-Director of

the Institute of Plasma Focus Studies, Melbourne, Australia. In 2010, Prof Saw was appointed as

the Consultant Visiting Professor to the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering,

Kansas State University. Prof Saw is a Vice-President of Asian-African Association for Plasma

Training, a role she has held since 2012.

She has been a recipient of various international grants including from the International Centre

for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy and the International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna. She

also led and participated in many national grants.

Prof Saw has served as an academic and held various educational administrator posts. She served

as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Nilai University and Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and

Innovation, INTI International University and was Head of the Centre for Plasma Research

concurrently.

Session-4-B: Dr. Paul LEE Choon Keat, Nanyang

Technological University, Singapore

Dr Lee has a first class Bachelor of Science (Hons), Physics and a PhD in Plasma Physics from

Imperial College, University of London, UK. The research work for his PhD was done in Imperial

College and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. He also has a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching

Higher Education from National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University

Singapore.

Dr Lee is currently an Associate Professor of Physics at the Natural Sciences and Science

Education Academic Group, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University,

Singapore. He has been attached to various labs and institutes as a researcher and teacher. Some

of these institutes are: Hellenic Mediterranean University (Formerly TEI of Crete), University of

California San Diego, University of Washington, INTI International University, International

Centre for Theoretical Physics, University of Otago, National University of Singapore High

School and Hwa Chong Institution. Prof Lee has extensive and varied research experience. He has

worked on laser produced plasmas, various pinches and plasma focus. He also has publications in

radiation measurements, materials modification, plasma applications, and physics education. He

has contributed to over 300 articles with a total citation of 6853 and an h-index of 41 according to

Google Scholar.

Currently Dr Lee volunteers as honorary secretary of Asian African Association for Plasma

Training, as council member of the Institute of Physics Singapore in charge of Physics

competitions, as member of the International Committee for the International Center for Dense

Magnetised Plasmas, and as alternate INIS Liaison Officer representing Singapore to the IAEA.

Session-5: Dr. Blair P. Bromley (Chair – CNS-FEASTD)

Dr. Blair P. Bromley (circa 2014 November)

Dr. Blair P. Bromley (Fellow of the CNS) is the current chair of the Fusion Energy and Accelerator Science

and Technology Division of the Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS-FEASTD), since 2010. He has a B.A.Sc.

in Mechanical Engineering (University of Toronto, 1993), a M.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering (University

of Illinois, 1998) and a PhD. in Nuclear Engineering (University of Illinois, 2001). Dr. Bromley has been

employed as a Reactor Physicist with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), Chalk River Laboratories

(2003-2014), and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) (2014-present). He also has prior work experience at

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) (2001-2003), and Los Alamos National Laboratory (1994-1998). Dr.

Bromley has served multiple volunteer roles in various divisions and committees within the Canadian Nuclear

Society, the American Nuclear Society (ANS), and Women-in-Nuclear, Eastern Ontario Chapter (WiN-EO).

Session-6: Dr. Raymond Golingo, Fuse Energy Technologies

Inc., Canada

Dr. Raymond Golingo i s presently a Fusion Engineer at Fuse Energy Technologies Inc. He is

leading the effort to develop a flow-through Z-pinch fusion reactor at the company. Dr. Golingo

received a BS i n 1990, a MS i n 1998, and a PhD i n 2003 from the Aeronautical and Astronautical

Engineering department at the University of Washington. From 1998 to 2018 he performed

research on the ZaP, ZaP-HD, and FuZE devices at the University of Washington, where he

became a Research Professor. There he became one of the world’s leading experts on using sheared

flows to stabilize a Z-pinch plasma. Ultimately, Dr. Golingo showed that it is possible to achieve

thermonuclear fusion i n a sheared-flow stabilized Z-pinch. He also successfully implemented

Thomson Scatter measurements on multiple devices. His present work uses a flow through Z-pinch

to accelerate our transition to a fusion economy.

Session-7: A.C. (Andy) Wallace – HOPE Innovations Inc., Canada

Andrew Wallace has almost 40 years experience in the Canadian nuclear industry, during which time he

has worked for Atomic Energy of Canada, Ontario Hydro/Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power and

Kinectrics, where he is currently holds a position of Technical Director in the Materials and Major

Components Department. He holds a B.A.Sc. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Toronto

(1981) and an MASc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Ottawa (1988). He is also a

Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA). Andy is also the CEO of HOPE Innovations, a small venture

engaged in fusion energy research both in Canada and China.
