The ANZSCTS Database Program was founded in

1999 as an initiative of the Australian and New

Zealand Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgeons

(ANZSCTS), Monash University, and the Victorian

Department of Health. Since then, the program has

expanded nationally to become Australia’s only

adult cardiac surgery database.

The ANZSCTS Database Program is an established

quality assurance program with aims to:

Monitor patient treatment and outcomes Track serious complications Benchmark unit performance nationally Standardise quality of treatment and care for

patients Encourage research into improved cardiac

healthcare

The Data Custodian is Professor Christopher Reid,

Director of the Centre for Cardiovascular Research

and Education in Therapeutics (CCRET), Monash

University. CCRET is responsible for the

management and maintenance of the program.

There are currently twenty-three public hospitals (out

of twenty-four) and seventeen private hospitals

enrolled in the program Australia wide.

Funding is provided by the Department of Health (VIC),

Clinical Excellence Commission (NSW), QLD Health and

individual units.
