Julian Morris & Vanessa Redgrave

Coming Out: A 50 Year History Monday, June 18 at 9 pm

Transgender teen Jazz Jennings narrates this documentary in which young people interview a host of LGBTQ elders who came out in different historical eras. These inspiring talks give insight into the politi-cal and personal changes that shaped the modern LGBTQ movement. The young interviewers get an opportunity to compare and contrast their coming out experience with people who came out during McCarthy, Civil Rights, post-Stonewall, and AIDS eras.

Frontline: Growing Up Trans Thursday, June 21 at 9 pm

Just a generation ago, it was adults, not kids, who changed genders. But today, many children are transitioning, too — with new medical options, and at younger and younger ages.

In Growing Up Trans, Frontline takes viewers on an intimate and eye-opening journey inside the struggles and choices facing transgender kids and their families.

Masterpiece: Man in an Orange Shirt Sunday, June 24 at 8 pm

A remarkable cast headed by Oscar-winner Vanessa Redgrave (Julia) portrays a pair of love stories, sixty years apart, linked by family ties, sexual identity, and a mysterious painting, in Man in an Orange Shirt, scripted by bestselling novelist Patrick Gale (A Place Called Winter).

The Day it Snowed in Miami Sunday, June 24 at 10 pm

Traces the political activism behind an equal-rights statute in Miami, and how it galvanized the gay rights movement in Florida and beyond. Thirty five years ago, as snowflakes prepared to dust palm trees in a city known for its warmth, Miami-Dade County lawmakers unknowingly debated an issue that would ignite a political maelstrom. The 90-minute documentary also chronicles the tragic effects of the AIDS pandemic in South Florida.

From the PRESIDENT

KRCB board meetings are held on the third Wednesday of most months at the station. Call for details: 707-584-2000

Dear Member and Supporter,Over the past seven months, since the devastating fires of

October 2017, many in the North Bay and greater Bay area have stepped up to help our neighbors and communities in new, unique, and profound ways. KRCB had one such opportunity that speaks volumes about the displays of heart that we all witnessed.

In November, KRCB was asked by the Music Home Project of the East Bay Community Foundation to identify and award grant funding to ten individuals from Sonoma County’s music community who were affected by the fires. The donors wished for this grant to be used for supporting DJs and musicians who lost music, instruments, and personal belongings. KRCB’s deep roots among Sonoma County musicians and its service to this community for many decades made us a trustworthy partner.

The grants have now been distributed. All recipients had to flee their homes without time to pack their instruments and other gear. Proceeds from the grants were used to replace instruments and recording equipment and, in some cases, assisted professional musicians in getting back on the road and performing again.

We have appreciated this opportunity to be of service and thank the donors for their demonstration of compassion.

Warmly,

Great Performances: Driving Miss Daisy Wednesday, June 20 at 8 pm

Alfred Uhry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Driving Miss Daisy comes to television with five-time Tony Award-winner Angela Lansbury and two-time Tony Award-winner James Earl Jones as Daisy Werthan and Hoke Colburn, respectively. Boyd Gaines (a four-time Tony Award winner) reprises his Broadway role as Boolie Werthan.

Uhry’s classic play is a timeless, searing, funny, and ultimately hopeful meditation on race relations in America, told through the complex relationship between two of popular culture’s most enduring characters.

Karamu: 100 Years In The House

Great Performances: Indecent

James Earl Jones

Karamu: 100 Years in the House Wednesday, June 20 at 9:30 pm

The word “Karamu” comes from a Swahili word meaning “a place of joyful gatherings.” For the past 100 years, the Karamu House in Cleveland, Ohio – the oldest African-American theater in the United States – has lived up to its name, serving as a community center for the arts and maintaining a legacy of innovation and diversity. Karamu: 100 Years In The House tells the story behind this important theater in America’s arts and culture history. Karamu House has come to be known as a respected training ground and launching pad for many nationally known actors, playwrights and artists, including poet and playwright Langston Hughes, and author, folklorist, and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston.

Great Performances: IndecentWednesday, June 27 at 8 pm

Written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogel, Indecent is about the love and passion to create theatre, even in the most difficult of circumstances. The play follows a troupe of actors, the cast of Sholem Asch’s God of Vengeance, who risked their lives and careers against enormous challenges to perform a work in which they deeply believed, at a time when art, freedom and truth were on trial. It is a story told with compassion and honesty, but also with great theatricality, and joyous songs and dances. This recording of Indecent was completed just prior to its final Broadway performance.

7:30 Innerviews with Ernie Manouse: Lady Carnarvon. The Carnarvons are best known these days for their home, Highclere Castle, the setting of the popular PBS series Downton Abbey. But the family has a rich history just as exciting and scandalous as that of the fictitious Crowley family.

8pm Nature: Penguin Post Office. In the heart of the Antarctic Peninsula there’s a post office surrounded by jaw-dropping scenery and 3,000 gentoo penguins. Every summer, as staff put stamps on postcards, the penguins return from their fishing grounds to their breeding grounds, trek nearly two miles across sea ice and snow, rush to find a partner, build a nest, lay eggs and protect them from predators, and finally get down to the task of raising their young. We see their four-month drama unfold as cruise ships come and go, bringing tourists to buy postcards and photograph penguins – the backdrop to the penguins’ lives.

9pm Lost Bird Project. Charts the efforts of sculptor Todd McGrain to memorialize five birds – the Great Auk, Carolina

Parakeet, Labrador Duck, Passenger Pigeon and Heath Hen – driven to extinction in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The captivating nature documentary follows McGrain and his brother-in-law, Andy, as they embark on a road trip in search of the last-known locations of the birds and seek permission to install McGrain’s six-foot-tall bronze sculptures on those sites.
