OPEN BOYS SOCCER Gosford 2 defeated BWSC Woy Woy 1 (Goal - Brayden Mangan) Tough loss for the boys today in Round 3 of the Sydney North Knockout coming up against Gosford, a team we have never beaten. The boys started the stronger of the two sides, dominating play but unable to find the back of the net. One mistake meant we would go into the break 1-0 down. A change in structure and a rev up at halftime, the boys started well after the break but conceded another cheap goal, 2-0 Gosford. The boys dominated play for the last 15 minutes, with a solid goal to Brayden Mangan (Year 11) but were unable to score again, going close on numerous occasions. The loss meaning that football is done for 2017 with our focus shifting towards Futsal with Central Coast Championships coming up in Week 7. Special shoutout to our Year 12s - Wyatt Elliott (Captain), Jordan Murphy (Vice Captain), Jack Keenan and Mason Oldfield who all played their last game of football for the school today. Has been an absolute pleasure having you all in the squad! Likewise to Ben Amiet and Corey Hughes, who were unused off the bench but have played as part of our 2017 campaign. Hold your heads high boys, we will get them next time! FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK The campus has recently had some staffing changes and we welcome Tony Baxter to our Math faculty. Tony replaces Gail Sach who has transferred to North Sydney Girls HS. With sadness we farewelled our Deputy Principal Mr Roger Macey who has gained promotion as Principal at Callaghan College Jesmond senior campus. Mr Simon Warren from the Umina Campus will replace Roger. Liesl Tesch has resigned from her teaching position to represent our community as our local state member of parliament. Congratulations to Liesl who will do a tremendous job promoting our local community. Luke Hickey is presently replacing Liesl. Jay Blue has taken up a permanent teaching position at Epping Boys H.S. We welcome Jan Brown who will replace Jay. It is with pleasure that I announce that Jo Green has been appointed through merit selection as our new School Administration Manager (SAM). Jo replaces Robyn Simms who retired earlier this year. Congratulations to our campus captains Lara McLaughlan and Logan Evans, who represented our campus at the recent Woy Woy ANZAC service. The students gave an extremely moving speech and I have had a number of calls from community members who wished to pass on their congratulations. Liam Hylton-Evans and Tallula Mason demonstrated their leadership qualities when they represented our College at the Empire Bay and Vietnam Veterans ANZAC services. Again, I have received calls applauding their participation in the service. On Wed 3

rd May, we held our campus ANZAC service. Organised by Mr Macey and his

team, the student led service was extremely moving and well supported by all students. 3 weeks ago, we welcomed back our students who travelled to Europe during the holidays. Organised by Mr Macey this has now become a yearly event due to student demand. All reports indicate a highly successful trip with students appreciating the rich diversity and history of European culture. Year 10 student, Nicole Delos Santo, has been recognised as one of the winners in this year’s Harmony Day Poster Competition. Nicole, a talented artist, has been invited to NSW Parliament House to receive her award from Premier Berejiklian later this month. Reminders:

ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL

It is essential for children to be at school in order to receive their education. Sometimes circumstances, such as illness or family events prevent this from occurring for a period of time. It is a requirement that parents and carers get in touch with the school to let us know of the reason for absence from school. When absence persists, especially if it goes below 85% minimum attendance, a school representative may be in touch to see how we can assist in getting the child back to school. You may receive a letter to inform you of the level of attendance of your child, even if you have been sending notes in to the school. The attached table will help you to see the significance of every absent day from school. It adds up over time, and often we are unaware of how serious this has become. Please work with us in getting the best possible life outcomes for your child. Contact us whenever you are concerned or there is any form of assistance we can provide. Linda Langmaid HT Welfare

AVID ACTIVITIES

WICOR strategies are a major part of

Avid used in every day learning.

WICOR provides structure to the

lesson and note taking.

Regular Friday tutorials allow

students to help each other with

clarifying points of confusion (POC).

Students run the tutorials with

minimal guidance from teachers so

that students develop their

questioning skills and their creative

thinking.

In PD/H, we often work in teams. We

use Avid strategies in both practical

and theory lessons. These strategies

are used in all subjects.

Teamwork Tuesday involves different

groups each time completing

activities designed to develop

cooperation, collaboration,

communication, and critical thinking

in a practical situation.

SYDNEY ROYAL EASTER

Brisbane Water Secondary College wins Grand Champion Purebred Steer at

Sydney Royal Easter Show 2017

Preparations for the 2017 Sydney Royal Easter Show Cattle Show Program commenced five months prior to the competition. Cattle were provided from

breeders throughout NSW. For this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show BWSC Agriculture Department presented eight cattle for competition including five pure bred Limousin steers, two pure bred Square Meaters and one Trade steer. Agriculture students from Years 7 – 12 have actively assisted in the countless hours of preparation culminating at the show itself. Breeders, pastoralists and schools entered two hundred and fifty cattle in the Open Pure Bred Steer Competition.

Congratulations to our Ag students and 'Skippy' who was awarded Grand Champion. This is the first time in 27 years that our College has received an award for Grand Champ at Sydney Royal Easter Show, one of the few

national comps around Australia. Well done Ag team.

Brisbane Water Secondary College Agriculture Department staff and students would like to acknowledge our appreciation for the continuing support of Umina and Woy Woy Rotary Clubs.

Your generous sponsorship provides the opportunity for students to develop skills, character and values that are learned during the months of preparation and demonstrated in competition.
