In preparation of our “Celebration of Learning” Open House, Brookfield students in all grades work with their homeroom teachers, our Science Specialist, Mrs. Farrell, and our team of 8th Grade Student Mentors to research, design, and pre-sent their projects. Our Pre-first and 1st grade students team up to enter an ex-periment as a class. Once the projects are set up, an unbiased panel of judges who work in various fields in Science interview each student about his or her project. Students need to be able to answer some challenging questions in order to demonstrate their use of Scientific Method and what they learned from their research. Awards are given for Life, Earth, and Physical Science projects, as well as for best primary class projects and Technology/Engineering projects.

5th Grade Student, Jonathon Fong, won 1st Place in the Life Science category for grades 3-5. His experiment “Now That’s Disgusting!” tested which room had the highest concentration of germs by growing cultures from samples taken from around his house. Guess what? Jonathan’s bedroom had the highest number! Jonathon hy-pothesized that his nightly use of a humidifier may be encouraging bacteria to grow.

Above: Brother and sister, Adam and Audrey enjoyed looking at all the Science Fair projects. Above Left: Heela proudly shows off the bridge-building project her first grade class worked on as an engineering entry. Students worked together in teams to study and design a bridge. They tested their bridges stability, too! Left: Mrs. Mertell’s Pre-first Class won 1st Place for their class pro-ject, “How Did That Egg Get Inside?” The students created a vacuum that pulled the egg through a narrow opening. More cool projects on the next page...

Third Graders Isabelle and Gaby Teamed up to win 2nd Place in Physics for Grades 3-5. Fifth Grader, Charlotte, built her own groovy “lava lamp” while exploring the physical properties of a suspension.

Third Grader, Brandon, studied the differences between different types of animal hair under a microscope and found that he could identify different animal species through their hair/fur. 6th Grader, Brandon, demonstrated how to turn waste into gas.

Left: Katherine’s 7th Grade Life Science experiment tested the anti-bacterial properties of various spices. Jaedyn’s 3rd Grade Technology project, “How Does a Pinhole Camera Capture Light to Take a Picture?” Miss P.’s Pre-first class studied what happens when your combine acids and bases.

Left: 4th Grade Student, Rena Wang, logged over 7.5 hours practicing her Math facts on IXL over Winter Break! Her dedication to study pays off; as she recently earned High Honors for outstanding performance in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Talent Search! Right: 2nd Grade Student, Siela Brunello, impressed visitors when she confidently recited a lengthy Shel Silverstein poem !

Middle School students competed in the National Geographic Geography Bee this month. 7th Grader, Michael Ross, pulled through as our school winner. He gets the “thumbs up” from his Social Studies teacher, Mr. Bogart. Michael will go on to compete in the regional bee later this year. Good luck, Michael!

Alumni Corner

Congratulations to Brookfield Alumnus, Samuel May, who received the Principal’s Award at the Jesuit High School Commencement. Samuel’s award is given to seniors who have distinguished themselves by their school spirit, service, and general excellence. We had a recent visit from alumni Maddy Brown and Shelby Sackett, who are Sophomores at McClatcy High in the Humanities and International Studies Program (HISP). Both girls report that they are doing well and are keeping up with their studies. We also enjoyed hearing from Judith Day Albert, who was one of the teachers hired from Cam bridge, England in 1964! Judy jokes that she was part of the “British Invasion” along with the Beatles! Judy remembers when the curriculum was “strictly the 3 Rs and French, and Reading was taught from the McGuffey primers. We have certainly come a long way!
