Gateway Lakes WodongaGateway Lakes WodongaGateway Lakes WodongaGateway Lakes Wodonga The RSCA was asked if we could

supply 8 open top sports cars to carry the state flag bearers for the opening Ceremony

which started at 3.30 pm - the weather was perfect, in front of a large crowd.

The RSCA members that were there commented about the size of the event and how we didn't realize how big it was, with some 3000 paddlers from 50

clubs across Australia taking part The coarse varies between 200 metres, 500 metres and 2000 metres as well

as relay events, with the championships running for 5 days. A large number of

marquees were erected for food - dining area - coffee - equipment - clothing etc We (RSCA members) all arrived 30 minutes before our departure

time of 4.15 pm, where we found the marshalling area and the opening ceremony well organized with a timed run sheet and marshal. Thanks to all those members who drove their cars, and in doing so, gained great publicity for the RSCA in this area.

Historic WintonHistoric WintonHistoric WintonHistoric Winton As usual with Winton, the weather is a lottery. We gathered at the

Gateway parking area in heavy rain, and on departure it had eased somewhat. By the time we arrived at Winton, the rain had cleared and apart from a very light shower later in the day, the track stayed dry, and the racing was good until we left at 2.30 or so.

The numbers of people attending and cars on display were surprising given the weather, with a great range of vehicles, ranging from the very

new to the very old. 30 plus RSCA members were spotted during the day. Ray Jones brought along his recently restored Maseratti Mexico, and new member Anthony

Saltalamacchia had his 2017 Abarth 124 Spyder

The lunch time parade laps saw a few RSCA cars on track - Good to see Rogers car, but it was

the slowest lap time that it has ever done. Probably a good thing as Roger spent a lot of time talking !

Racing was good, although some of the cars

seemed to be struggling with the cold and not able to get heat into their

tyres, so spins and “offs” were regular. A TR6 had major front end damage

on the starting straight, and a number of others suffered panel

damage. As always, the sidecar guys were awesome. The bikes

often seemed to have all 3 wheels pointing in different directions as they

struggled for grip.

Joy and I left around 2.30pm and were not involved in the aftermath of the accident on the Hume freeway, which unfortunately claimed 2 lives.

Mac and Margaret Hope had been members of the RSCA many years ago, and our sympathy is extended to their family and friends. A sad way to end a weekend of wonderful Historic Car and Bike Racing.

President’s Report

Our weather is now a bit chilly and not the best weather for top down motoring, however there will be sunny days and being a little cold is better than sunburn, plus modern convertibles

have heated seats. Our AGM date for 2017 has been scheduled for Sunday October 22nd, so keep this Sunday free to attend our AGM at the Commercial Club. Full details are in this magazine. There will be a club subsidy of $10pp for members and their partners to encourage members to attend our AGM. Also we need members to consider being more involved in the running of our club by nominating for a position on the RSCA committee or executive. It’s always good to have fresh ideas and new people having an input into running our club.

Everyone is busy, so being too busy is not an excuse.

Over the past two months there have been a number of events which also took advantage of our beautiful Autumn weather. The National Motoring Heritage Day was held at the Gateway Lakes. There was a fantastic turnout of RSCA cars, enabling our club to win the trophy, so well done members. Thanks to everyone who attended Historic Winton is always a popular event with our members, how-ever there was a very small group of RSCA cars for the classic car display this year, perhaps the overnight rain put a few members off going. There was a huge array of classic vehicles on display for our enjoyment and a pit visit is always interesting to see where the action is. We have two sub committees appointed at present, one to produce our 2017 club calendar and the other to look into suitable club jackets. Our mid week run events continue to be well attended with usually fifteen cars or more. Many thanks to our event coordinators, who continue to organise these great events for us. Happy and safe motoring. Howard

It was great to be a part of the successful outcome of Bruce Gibbens “Vision”. After an intense effort raising funds, with assistance from members of the RSCA, other Car Clubs, family and friends, Bruce’s goal was achieved with the presentation to the Cancer Centre of a cheque for $11,500. With a number of RSCA members and their cars in the background, and the media present, Bruce and Howard made the presentation. Well done everybody who assisted in any way. The money will be used within the Regional Cancer Centre and is a fitting and lasting tribute to Dianne.

A comment from the President of the Association of Motoring Clubs inc. in a recent magazine.

We had a great response from our RSCA 2017 Calendar, so it has been decided to do it again for 2018. If you have a picture of

your car that is worthy of inclusion in our Calendar, then talk to one of the Committee. Profits from the sale of the calendar will be donated to Charity. This years Charity is yet to be decided by the Committee, please make a submission to the committee if you have a charity that needs consideration

The date for the AGM has been set for Sunday 22nd October 2017. The venue will be the same as last year - the Commercial

Club Albury, Banksia Room, located at the rear of the bistro. Entry to the room will be from 12 noon. Members attending will receive a $10 voucher from the RSCA to assist with purchase of lunch from the Bistro. The purpose of the AGM is to receive Annual Reports and to elect a new RSCA Executive, Committee and Club Officers. Nomination forms and your invitation to attend the AGM will be included in the next magazine, but in the meantime, please mark Sunday 22nd October at 12 noon for the AGM into your diaries, calendar or planner. You may also consider offering yourself for an active role within the RSCA, so please talk to any of the current people listed on page 4 of the magazine if you are interested. The Treasurer and Editor have both indicated that they are not seeking re-election so if you can help out44..

PORPUNKAHPORPUNKAHPORPUNKAHPORPUNKAH (A revised event!)(A revised event!)(A revised event!)(A revised event!)

One Angry Shot. One Angry Shot. One Angry Shot. One Angry Shot. That’s all it took to wheely upset things. It was a to be another of Noels ‘different’ trips. “Take your kids or

grandkids and their bikes to Myrtleford and watch or ride with them to Porepunkah” was a great proposition. But then$Noels treadley event took that left turn to Albuquerque when someone took exception to a cyclist on the rail trail and used him for target practice. Fortunately, that

gentleman is recovering, however the proposition went off the rails, so to speak, and consensus of opinion was that once more, four wheels are safer than two.

So four wheels it

was, and we joined the gathering at Gateway – Chantelle and I had decided to drive a pair of

Alfas (that’s how we avoid arguments), and both had a short discussion at the

Gateway lights with one of Vic Pols finest about the merits of an old Alfa, love that model and, oh

yeah, could you have a blow into the mouthpiece until I tell you to stop – ready to start a run to the Alpine Way, sans bicycles but with a great drive in front of us. Starting with a quick run to

Beechworth, where a short stop was provided for those needing a post morning coffee comfort break, which was all well and good providing you

were looking for said conveniences on the right side of the road, and not the left (but we got to see a bit more of Beechworth, circumnavigating like

Columbus looking for the new land) and then on to Stanley.

What a lovely drive that is, and even better the next section down to

the Yackandandah – Myrtleford Road. I considered doing a rapid u-turn at the end and repeating the exercise both up and down hill, but the promise of a Myrtleford coffee which was now sorely needed meant that’s a drive for another day.

Morning tea at the Alpine Cafe, and then it was on to Bright Berries for a few of us – well worth a visit for berry pies, jams, ice-creams and other temptations. Finally, it was on to Porepunkah,

for the lunch stop. This required a bit of navigation of a developing rallycross track, masquerading as road works, in order to achieve the ultimate goal of

lunch. The Punka Pub has been renovated, and is gaining a good reputation for food and service, however there was a reception being

held there and although there was a table booked for the club, they did warn us to expect a bit of a wait. Normally not a problem for us, however we had

other things on later that day, so Chantelle and I adjourned to the Rail Tracks café across the road, and were very happy with the food and service.

Overall a very enjoyable day, the sun kept shining and the cars behaved themselves (well ours did, anyway!).

MIDMIDMIDMID----WEEK RUNWEEK RUNWEEK RUNWEEK RUN

TUMBARUMBATUMBARUMBATUMBARUMBATUMBARUMBA On this beautiful sunny Autumn morning

Co-ordinator, or should I say Cartographer Malcolm McEachern, (whose navigational skills now rival

Anna, I mean William Bligh) gave the group the directions for the club run. There was no rum rebellion

this time as the route he had chosen to our lunch-time meal at Tumbarumba

looked quite interesting as he had us going via Culcairn and Holbrook

instead of the quick way up the freeway. Culcairn bakery was our first stop for the usual tea, coffee and snack. A few of us braved, or were silly enough to put the rooves down on the sporties but found the air blowing through the hair was cold, however

heaters were cranked up to the maximum to compensate. Three more couples joined us at the bakery. This made a total of 21 cars, 40 odd members, ready for the sprint to Tumba! Back to the bakery though. There were already 10 or 12 locals lined up to buy their goods when our

crew arrived. The staff were overrun but would have been happy with the proceeds RSCA members’ “donated” to their coffers.

Page 21: OPEN TOPICS - RSCArsca.net.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/206-Jul-Aug17.pdfWed 12 Mid Week Run - Eskdale. Depart Gateway 9am. Travel via Dartmouth. Call Malcolm for details 0418691296

21

On the run to Holbrook the “Stock for next 5 km” didn’t seem to mean much. This was until we had travelled 2 or 3 km past that sign and seen nothing so speeds began to increase. When we rounded the next curve

we were “attacked” by a herd of cattle. I know that I had to brake hard. Another lesson learned! Other than that, the drive to Holbrook was enjoyable as it was getting warmer. From there the undulating road with its sweeping curves could have

promoted speeding but from what I saw the driving was sublime or even sedate! I must be writing this through rose coloured glasses! So, can you handle the truth? Julie Andrews sang “The hills were alive with the sounds of music.” The music I liked was the bark of a Cleveland 351,

MGB and Porsche V8’s. These coupled with club members’ howling Porsches, Jaguars etc. made the trip “good fun!” The sounds diminished for a while as we got stuck behind a log truck but at the top of the hill our truck driver pulled over to let us lose again.

During the quiet time behind the truck we were able to assess the scenery. This part of the Great Dividing Range at this time of year with the trees changing colours and the rolling grassed hills lends itself to taking pictures. I noticed some members pulling over to do just this.

We arrived just after noon and the members 21 sporties took up most of the

parking in Tumba’s main street. Members were hungry so it was into the Tumbarumba

hotel for our “bushman’s, or bush-woman’s” size lunches. Staff here too

were under pressure to attend to our needs, however over the next

hour they achieved their lunch delivery goals! The specials, Lamb shanks

and cutlets appeared to be the most popular. People began to drift outside for the usual window shopping walk and not long after we chose different routes for our journey back to the big smoke. Once again, a big thankyou to Malcolm and Robyn for the

invigorating run. See you next time! Greg “Chappelli” Chapple. P.S. I hope you washed the cow poo from under the car!

This years event was held on a fine autumn day and as usual featured a wide variety of vehicles from veterans to modern rods. I'm not

sure if they had as many entries as usual as the centre of the street wasn't full, but there were lots of cars in the paddock. It was good to see a lot of cars from Leeton and Temora car clubs, which I hadn't seen before.

Those I spotted from the RSCA were: Gordon Nicholls, Phil Harrison, Ian Tuttle, Kerry Bedford, Kim & Chantelle McConchie (in his'n her XU1's), Phil Wilkins, Brett Rochow, Tom Rochow, John Buckley, David Buckley, John Adams, John Harding, Greg & Lyn

Harris, Bruce Doughty, Mail Haddon, Peter & Carolyn Spasojevic. Sorry if

I missed anyone. Gordon Nicholls

A note received from David Anderson, says that “Every story must

have a beginning, middle and an end” Looks like this story as well as

having the required beginning, middle and end, also had a major element of luck, as the driver and navigator were not hurt.

It was a beautiful autumn Sunday with about 100 cars present, 60 being

EJ and EH’s. Some were very pleasing to the eye. A big win/win for me.

BARN FIND !!!BARN FIND !!!BARN FIND !!!BARN FIND !!! We all dream of it, we are always on the look out or waiting for that

little snippet of information that just might lead us to something special. While we may hope, usually it is just that - HOPE. Recently, I was involved in a conversation that mentioned there were 2 Lamborghinis in storage with an owner who didn’t have plans for them.

But what model were they - Countach?, Miura?, I just didn’t know. With my passion for all things Lamborghini and having some previous experience with these cars, needless to say, I got involved. I also involved a friend, Mark Jansen, who owns Oldtimers

Australia, a specialist in Sports, Racing and Classic cars, from Brisbane. After some months all is revealed. Behind the storage unit doors were a 1972 S2 Espada and a 1974 S3 Espada, both in very restorable condition. Considering they had been stored for 10 to 15 years, the tyres

were flat, a rats nest was in one of the engine bays, they were covered in dust both under and on top of the covers, but that was all cosmetic, they are, after all, very desirable Lamborghinis and very original. Both cars have been purchased by Oldtimers Australia and have

been trucked to Brisbane. There has been considerable interest world-wide in these cars as this increases the number of know Espadas, and people want to know what is in the future for these 2 cars. Check out the

Oldtimers web site for more details. John Allott

National Motoring Heritage National Motoring Heritage National Motoring Heritage National Motoring Heritage DayDayDayDay

A great turn up of RSCA vehicles gathered in the parking area of

Gateway Island, before moving as a group into the display area.

Additional members arrived, until we had a total of 43 cars on display, to

celebrate National Motoring Heritage Day. This event was organised by

the Albury Wodonga Antique Car Club as a part of their 50th Anniversary

Celebrations. There were a great number of cars from considerable

distances that joined into the Celebrations

The RSCA had the greatest number of cars by an individual club at

the event so won the prize. Well done to all those who attended. As part

of receiving the glory for the greatest number of cars on display, we also

received the dubious honour of arranging next years event, so please be

prepared to help if the organisers ask.

The trip from the Gateway parking area to the display venue across

the road, proved to be too much for Gricey - his faulty fuel gauge won out

and Gricey stopped on the side of the road to top up the tank.

The food and coffee vans were busy throughout the day, as well as

the jumping castles for our future members. The food and coffee were a

great addition to the event. I don’t know much about the Jumping Castles

- I wasn’t allowed to try them out! John Allott # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #

It was a beautiful day for a car display and 9 RSCA cars attended.

Unfortunately, not many other people attended, and apart from the staff and some of the residents of the facility who came to have a look at the cars and to enjoy the sunshine, it was a time for talking amongst ourselves and relaxing in the sun.

When a Toyota 86 hit the wall at Forests Elbow during the Easter 6 hour race, I received this shot to prove that “Chappelli does get down and dirty scrutineering at the Bathurst !”

I believe that Harry

Greenhalgh is trying to find more room in his garage after a recent purchase.
