OverviewThe Open Cut Mining Operational Improvement forum has been designed to specifically tackle open cut operational challenges and sets out to investigate how systems are fast evolving and will help decipher which look set to significantly enhance open pit mining operations. An examination of practical case studies will provide delegates with new perspectives on improvement and will ensure they are introduced to cutting edge technologies and systems which will assist in achieving operational excellence. Those responsible for operations within open cut mines have their own specific set of challenges – this event provides the focus and expertise needed to overcome these and assist in enhanced operational performance.

Some of the key topics include:• Sustaining efficiency post GFC• improving productivity through enhanced operations• pioneering operational technology case studies• sustainability of improvement processes and cost reduction• linking mine planning and processing optimisation• investigating improvement opportunity within mine design • maximising profits from existing operations without capital expenditure• unlocking levers of value in an open pit mining operation• ways to improve equipment operability and maintainability

Who will be attending? Those with open cut mining operational responsibility and business improvement: General Managers, Mine Managers, Operations Manager, Principal Engineers, Technical Engineers, Project Managers, Business Improvement Specialists, Process Engineers, Mine Planning Engineers, Industry experts and consultants.

A two day forum to improve operational efficiency.......

OPEN CUT MINING- OPERATIONAL OPTIMISATION & BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT FORUM

7th -9th November 2011 The Duxton Hotel, Perth

1.30 PM TO 5.00 PM

Overview

• Assessing problem(s) a collision avoidance system should solve across three areas: vehicle-person, vehicle-vehicle, and vehicle-infrastructure (e.g. walls, stopes and machinery). • Define the functional and performance requirements for a system seeking to provide a solution to these problems. • Review the state-of-the-art by reviewing what systems already exist for underground situational awareness and what their capabilities and limitations are relative to the requirements. • Articulate what technology gaps must be closed to realize necessary functionality.

Overview

• How to make the most of Mining data and its interpretation.• The visual tools that can give the least experienced Manager a better understanding.• Resource estimation and Open Pit Optimisation.• Case Study of Yarrabee Mining Company – overcoming pitfalls and enhancing operations

Host: Ross McAree, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, University of Queensland and Vice President of Automation CRCMining.

Using best practice operations as a strategy for attracting and retaining professional peopleThe mining industry suffers from a shortage of professional and other workers. Our analysis has shown a close correlation between high performance in productivity, maintenance and safety. It is our hypothesis that mines can use a strategy of demonstrating that they are best practice operations as a way to attract high calibre people. Many professional people are attracted by the prospect of a high achieving site because of the learnings and the support for continually trying new things. Operators and drivers are attracted by sites which have fewer dangerous people operating or driving. The process requires sites to become best practice and then to communicate this to the employment market. The strategy needs a specific approach and this paper will discuss this.

Global Business Improvement - The approach:• Training and mentoring of future leaders• Talent development and mentoring of + current leaders• Business Improvement assessment for business units and transfer of best practices• Global Operational Services - service excellence as a group across Safety, Maintenance, BI, Technology and ProcurementMandy Beveridge, Manager, Business Improvement, Cliffs natural Resources Pty Ltd
