Near patient testing using the OPTI blood gas analyser for blood gases allows:

The Oxygen Assessment team based at Good Hope Hospital have used the OPTI blood gas analyser since 2007.

The service provides assessment clinics on 4 sites and therefore selection of a suitable blood gas analyser was crucial. Following a tendering exercise, the OPTI was selected for its portability, flexibility, simplicity of use and running costs. The device has proved to be reliable and accurate and is included on the Trust WEQAS program.

The service has continued to expand and a further OPTI analyser was purchased in 2011. The analysers are used for both arterial and capillary blood gas sampling and have provided to be reliable for both types of blood gas sampling techniques.

We have a service contract on both devices, provided by UNA Health. On the rare occasions when we have called them with a problem, the service has been quick and helpful. If a fault cannot be rectified on the ‘phone, the engineers normally provide a site visit within 24 hours and if the problem remain, a loan device is supplied whilst the fault is resolved.
