Geographic possition

M unicipal Žitorađa is located in the southeastern part of Ser-bia, in the Toplica region, 10

km far from the corridor ten which connects Serbia with the Foreign Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Greece and further towards Eastern countries. Žitorađa is 35 km to the south-west from Niš,and is Niš centered since it is the economic political, and cultural centre. There are18900 inhabitants in 30 in-habited places.

Population

History

F irst records of Žitorada, as an inhabited region, date from IV century, as an old Byzantine city

“Žitoradsko kale”. The “Latin church” located in Glašinac, a village near Ži-torada, dates from this period. In VII century “Zitoradsko kale” was inhab-ited by Slavic people. - 1877. Žitorada is liberated from long term Turkish slavery. This event is considered the founding year of our municipal.

Arheological exavacion

F amous and extremely interest-ing archeological excavations are „Kale‟ on the mountain Pas-

jača where you can find the remains of an ancient Roman city ‟Ad Hercu-les‟, then „Glasinska cuka‟ near the village Glasinac, and the „Latin church‟ which dates from IV century.

Culture, education and health care

P rimary School in Žitorađa dates from 1873. and today it is a modern educa-tional institution which besides the main school in Žitorađa has Primary schools in Pejkovac, Crnatovo and Dubavo, whereas other villages usually

have only four grades. There are over 1652 pupils. Secondary School in Žitorađa exists from 1978. year. There are three educational profiles: mechanical, agricultural and economic school. The kindergarden ‟First joy‟ takes care of the youngest children and dates from 1981. This kindergarden program involves 90% of pre-school children. There is also a National library with over 35000 books in order to fulfill the needs of its inhabi-tants. Health Centre dates from 1956. Today it is a modern institution which provides the basic health care and only a part of specialistic and consulting health care perse-verance. All bigger villages have their ambulances.

Traffic

T he traffic infrastructure repre-sents one of the most important element for the economic

growth of the community. Regional road P-245 Niš-ŽitoraĎa-Prokuplje-Priština and P-221 Niš-Pejkovac-Prokuplje-Priština, which leads throug Dobričthe centre of agricultural production, and road P-223 which connects Žitorađa and Bojnik passing throug the village Dubovo make the infrastructure of this region. The total length of these regional routs is 38 кm. This community is only 12 km away from the international road cori-dor E-75. In the recent years a lot has been done in the field of moderniza-tion of our roads, with the special care of local and rural roads in order to facilitate transportation of agricul-tural products. The year 2005. is marked by the complete renovation of 24 km of the communal roads, followed by this year’s building of 5 km long new roads, therefore; by the year 2008., we expect the com-plete modernization of not only main roads but also of the local streets of the whole region.

Energy

T he electricity grid is quite satis-fying. Currently we are working on the improvement of low volt-

age network. The electricity supplies are adequate both for the population and legal entities. There are plans for improving of the low voltage network, and ideas how to unburden the exist-ing network– by installing new substa-tions. The long-distance power line of 10 kW in Žitorađa has been under con-struction in order to reduce burden from the existing one. The reconstruc-tion of long-distance power line of 10 kW from Žitorađa to Drenovac has been in prepare, and possibly there would be another one towards Ban-jevac which is to become a new indus-trial zone.

Gas line

Ž itorađa does not have a gas line but we are included in a general plan of the Republic of Serbia for

the gas line which would go from Niš through Žitorađa and Kuršumlija to Priština. This can be considered to be significant growth prospect and an important factor for development of industry but also a possibility for very profitable foreign investment.

Plumbing and sewerage system

T he majority of Žitorađa‟s inhabi-tants get water from their own wells, except from Žitorađa

which has the plumbing system in-stalled. The water quality is poor, therefore the construction of plumb-ing and sewerage system in all villages is considered to be of main priority. As a result of our co- production with the European Union five local communi-ties are currently having the pluming system installed, and similar projects for all the other villages are in prepa-ration. Throughout the entire region there are abundant natural resources of clean spring waters which represent a considerable fortune. Both the cur-rent and planned projects are to be-come a part of the unique plumbing system which is to be connected with the village system.

Telecommunications industry

T elecommunications infrastruc-ture of our community consists of: public system Telecom Ser-

bia and two cellular systems of com-munication Telecom Serbia and Telenor. In general this aspect of in-dustry is well covered in Žitorađa thanks to the priorly mentioned opera-tor systems. The public telecommunications system in Žitorađa is connected to the Niš– Prokuplje line which is to enable the installation of new communications technologies such as (ISDN, ADSL...) bz the end of 2006.

T he economy of Žitorada is based on agriculture, in which the leading role belongs to the cultivation of early vegetable from greenhouses and growing of watermelon. Fruit growing as well as farming are also present in this re-

gion. Our municipality sees its possibility for rapid growth in cultivation of healthy food from greenhouses and open fields. There is 23.303,89 hectare of arable land. The structure of agricultural production varies according to the market laws of supply and demand. According to the recent records the structure of agricultural production is:

T he basic characteristic of our production is hardworking and expert knowl-edge which results in high productivity with minimum usage of herbicides. Production of healthy food in the following period will rely on the knowl-

A s far as cattle breeding is concerned there is the farm “December 1st” (13,Toplickih heroja street, phone No.027/62-089) with the capac-ity of 30.000.000 fatten pigs per year. This farm is one of the most success-

ful in the whole republic. It is prone to development of its activity, that is, to making the final products for the market, slaughterhouse industry and the produc-tion of food for cattle growing. The privatization of this industry is expected in the year 2008.

Communal economy

W e should also mention the collective farm “Pobeda” Donje Crnatovo (village

Donje Crnatovo 18406, phone no. 027/65-224) with its capacity of 12000 battery chicken, a place for mixing food for cattle growing, 17 ha of fer-tile ground and 120 ha under forest, as well as collective farm “Budućnost Žitorađa” (49,Topličkih heroja Street , phone no. 027/62-145) with the capacity of 10.000 battery chicken, equipment and 65 hа of land. The previously mentioned farms are prone to renting and further exploi-tation, however the privatization is yet not possible because of the admin-istrative procedure which does not allow selling of collective farms (The law of collective farms).

T raditional agricultural produc-tion is complemented with the share holders company „Čelik‟

Žitorađa (31, Svetosavska Street, phone no. 027/62-046), which builds engineering and agricultural tools (plow, harrow, sowing and planting machine etc). This firm is well equipped to broaden its influence on the market after privatization. This company has gone out to ten-der privatization process and all the interested investors will be provided with all the necessary information concerning the price from The Privati-zation Agency of the Serbian Govern-ment or the company itself.

Healthy food

O ur municipality sees its possibil-ity for rapid growth in cultiva-tion of healthy food from

greenhouses and open fields, for for-eign and domestic markets.

Ethno village & House for hunters

H UNTING AS THE MOST IMPOR-TANT SECTOR OF FARM TOUR-ISM and building of boarding

houses which would accommodate hunters. There is a convenient loca-tion for building such premises which could be another interesting and prof-itable venture for potential investors. Our municipality has launched a re-search project on THE OPENING OF ETHNIC VILLAGE WITH BOARDING HOUSES FOR HUNTERS – to be offered to all potential investors. T hese birds are capable of living and surviving only in places where there are no pesticides or

herbicides in the ground. Such a rich hunting ground attracts hunters both from our and foreign countries. In the recent years numerous hunters and nature lovers from Italy have spent some quality time in Žitorađa.

A ccording to the records from 1956. Žitorada is rich in underground water supplies with a well somewhere between Žitorada and Jasenica. This loca-tion is extemely suitable for CLEAR WATER EXPLATATION and probably

T he biggest and the most expensive project is the BUILDING OF RECREATION CENTRE in Žitorađa near the river Toplica whose purpose is needless to ex-plain. The project has already been made and offered to potential inves-

tors. According to the plan one big and two smaller swimming pools, changing rooms, a restaurant and a tea garden are to be built. There would be a football pitch, a basketball court and a running track which would lead along the bank of Toplica. In a place called „Izvor‟ (the well) only 5 km from Žitorađa there is a DEEP FRESH WATER WELL which also has its surface part and could be turned into a swimming pool –this could be another tourist attraction. The municipality is the owner of this well and is open for investment.

T he industrial zone R-3 is situ-ated in the mere entrance to the village Žitorada if you are

coming from Niš. It is the area of 8 ha only 1 km from the centre of the vil-lage. The industrial zone is connected with the regional road P-245 and is only 300 m away from the railroad station. This area has plumbing, sew-erage and telecommunication infra-structure installed. The land is the private property; however, we are doing everything in our power to buy the land from their owners and offer it to investors FOR FREE if they could guarantee employment for at least 50 workers.

T he reserve industrial zone is also on the regional road P-245 near the village Badnjevac, 5

km from the corridor 10 Belgrade-Skopje-Thessalonica, and only 6 km from Žitorada. We expect the munici-pality of Žitorada to issue a govern-ment regulation for getting investment license by the year of 2007. The municipality of Žitorada is ready to accept any kind of collabora-tion or initiative. We have to mention the need of refrigerator trucks and fruit and vegetables processing capac-ity as the issues of immense impor-tance. This location is suitable for any kind of business activity because of fully regulated infrastructure. We are ready to make a detailed plan how to divide the zone and make attractive offers to inves-tors , with the possibility of renting the land for free to investors who would employ mare than 50 workers.
