Optional TCE Questions

for Additional and More Specific Feedback

The Project: During 2012, the final stages of the major overhaul and updating of the TCE

system are being put into place. Along with a new website and improved user access to TCE

tools and information, new director reporting access by academic unit administrators, the

legacy TCE system of “customization” is being revamped in several important ways.

Briefly, following the migration of the data held in the single “legacy” Item Bank to the new

TCE Master Database, the result will be a series of TCE Question Collections which will include

four kinds of “Collections”:

• TCE System Collection: These are the questions in common use on standard

questionnaires

• Departmental collections: all questions used by a department in addition to

TCE standard questions, viewable by the department and its faculty

• Individual collections: all questions written by individuals (questions and

results viewable only by the question author

• Curated Collections: These are professionally developed sets of questions on

specific teaching and learning topics. Curated collections include items

subjected to professional review for validity and reliability and are designed

to support faculty, faculty peer mentors, and faculty development staff in the

Office of Instruction and Assessment

Collections and their questions can also be used to more efficiently nsupport course

development, or course, program, or curricular evaluation for grant funded projects, APR or

other activities in which student feedback is a useful component.

To support faculty and their support staff in using TCE questions for obtaining midsemester

feedback for course and teaching skills development, a new feature is being added to the TCE

system interface that will allow TCE questions ( question text, item characteristics, and

response options) to be exported in machine readable formats for import into other survey

systems including personal response systems (Clickers), the D2L survey tool, Blackboard Survey

tool, and similar online or paper based dedicated survey applications.

The Questions: This is a selected subset of nearly 500 questions taken from a collection of

over 2000 optional TCE questions now being made available to faculty and academic units to

optionally extend the Standard Short Form and other standard forms in the TCE system.

Using this collection faculty can more easily customize the questionnaire being used in a

particular course by importing ready-made questions. The collection also aims to provide

examples of well tested exemplars for faculty who need to construct more specific questions.

Optional, Additional TCE Questions (SP 2012 Pilot) Page 2 of 22

The larger collection will be introduced in Fall 2012 when the current tce.arizona.edu user

interface for adding questions to TCE forms is fully complete. The current interface is

transitional until the new fully re-engineered TCE database is rolled out Fall 2012. We also

hope to deploy modern, semantic content management and graphical display software that will

help the user find questions of interest despite the huge amount of variability in instructional

terminology and cultures across the academic disciplines.

Here are some key points about the pilot collection as seen in Spring 2012

• Privacy: Results for these questions are confidential when added by the instructor

and can only be viewed by the instructor and/or the Course Director, if applicable.

Results are viewable by department and instructor only when added by department

representative

• Format: This collection is currently restricted to questions that can be printed on

paper TCEs as well as appear in online TCEs. Additional questions for online use will

be available in Fall 2012. These questions are restricted to a common 5 pt. response

set “strongly agree” to “strongly disagree”, but will be expanded in future to include

additional response types.

• Portability: Although TCE questions can be exported for use in mid-semester

feedback questionnaires by cut and paste only, however, a feature allowing export of

questions in CSV and XML formats to other survey systems including personal

response systems, D2L survey tools, and a wide variety of survey and assessment

software systems.

(SPRING 2012 Partial Set for Pilot)

INSTRUCTIONS: Faculty may select and add questions from this collection by entering one or more of

the “BANK #” separated by “;” using TCE Tools/Instructors/Setup can be added to

their current term’s questionnaire(s). Currently, the interface is active only during

designated “customization” times (see TCE Calendar).

A link to a demo video showing how to use the interface can be accessed using the

“Help” link on that page. Consultation on using ratings items for teaching improved

can be obtained from the Office of Instruction and Assessment.
