maturity and ageing
• Distinguish between puberty and adolescence
• Identify the changes in males and females during puberty
• Identify the hormones that initiate puberty in males and females
The human life cycle is the time from conception to birth. The human life cycle has five main
stages and these include: infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and ageing.
Infancy occurs from years 1-4.
Childhood occurs from years 4-12
Adolescence occurs from 13-18
Adulthood occurs from 18+ years

Puberty and Adolescence
During adolescence, the reproductive organs mature and both boys and girls become able to
reproduce. Adolescence occurs when there is a sudden increase in both growth and maturity.
In this stage of the life cycle a child changes to an adult and gains sexual maturity.
Adolescence starts at age 12 in girls and 14 in boys.
Puberty is the period when the secondary sexual characteristics develop.

the hormone and state the function of the hormones.
2. Write three changes that occurs in both males and females during puberty.
3. Make a poster of the human life cycle to highlight the stages. Poster should be
colourful and the name of stages must be clearly seen. Write three sentences on what
happens in each stage. Take a picture of the poster and email it to your teacher’s
email, with your name attached. Marks will be given for creativity
