Medication taken by DM patient for

related or unrelated systemic condition

may produce salivary hypofunction.

Dry Mucosal Surface

Caused by insufficient salivary output are

easily irritated, causing;

•Minor mucosal ulceration.

•Oral burning sensation.

•Increased overgrowth of fungal organism.

Dental caries

The high incidence and severity of dental

caries in DM patient have been associated

with;-

•Xerostomia.

•Increase gingival crevicular fluid glocuse

level.

•Increase dental plaque accumulation.

Gingivitis and Periodontitis

DM also an established risk factor for the

prevalence and severity of gingivitis and

periodontitis.

Progressive destructive periodontitis is

more common in patient with poor glycemic

control.

Poor hygiene and smoking contribute to the

increased incidence and severity of

periodontitis.
