How do you smell?

I'm not implying that you didn't take a shower or use deodorant this morning.

But smell is one of the ways that we affect others. Have you ever gotten on an

elevator with someone who put on too much cologne?

Have you ever gotten on a piece of exercise equipment at a gym only to notice

that the person next to you (as they begin to breathe hard and sweat) smoked

cigarettes on the way to the gym or had way too much Mexican food the night

before?

Or as a child, do you remember the smell of your gramma's favorite scent . . .

lavender, when she hugged you with a full squeeze? Remember how you used to

carry the odor of chlorine after you swam at the public pool?

I read an article recently that made an interesting observation, “The alive,

spirit-led Christian has an "easily identifiable fragrance. We should leave an

unmistakable sense with others that we are different. And that difference should

be so palpable that others sense it from us --- they can almost smell it.”

To mix metaphors, a Presbyterian minister friend used to say to me, “You are

so Methodist, you squeak.” I’m not really sure what he meant by that. Perhaps it

was because I would sing the great Wesleyan hymn, “O For a Thousand Tongues

to Sing”, with such intensity that it caused his ears to ring. Truth be told that is

not how I would want him to characterize me as a Methodist.

John Wesley is quoted as saying, "One of the principal rules [of being a

Methodist] is, to lose no occasion of serving God. And, since he is invisible to our

eyes, we are to serve him in our neighbor; which he receives as if done to himself

in person, standing visibly before us."

Why do we do mission work in the city of Buffalo at Center City Café or Seneca

St. UMC or collect food for the food pantry? Why do we volunteer our time to

assist with “Family Promise” ministry with the homeless or collect articles that

benefit the “Clara’s Closet” ministry? Outside the walls of the church - in new

and different environments, as we engage people while trying to represent the

one who sent us --- Jesus Christ --- the question often arises: "Do we really carry

Jesus with us in such a palpable way, in the way we walk, talk, love and serve ---

that others can see it and almost smell the difference?"

What is your fragrance? Do you pass the smell test?

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Jay
